  • Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II adds a very important milestone to her record reign on 6 February 2022 as she becomes the first-ever British Monarch to celebrate a #PlatinumJubilee.
However, it must be noted that the length of her time on the throne is due to her father's untimely death at the age of 56 seventy years to this day.
In solemn commemoration of His Late Majesty's memory, here is a recording of King George VI on what would be his last Christmas Message, originally broadcast on 25 December 1951.

His Majesty's advisers suggested that he save his voice and allow Princess Elizabeth to read the speech in his place. His reply was "My daughter may get her chance next Christmas. I want to speak to my people myself." The speech was only 6 minutes in length, and the harsh sound of his voice alarmed rather than reassured many of his subjects. He was dead 43 days after this speech was broadcast.

He had already a fragile health and the war and tiredness took the final toll on him. Plus he was also, according to my English teacher, a very sensitive/caring/sensible person.

I heard or read somewhere that even given the short length of his speech, he still had to stop frequently to take a break and they had to splice it together to make it cohesive.

My grandfather was 6 years old living in British Malaya. I wonder if he did had a radio and heard this transmission but has no idea what it means (and he still has no idea how to speak English).
There are some parts of his speech mentioning historic conflicts that were ongoing during that time.
    6:38
The King mentioned the Malayan Emergency which had started by the Communist Party of Malaya in 1948, 3 years prior (and would continue until after the Malayan independence in 1960) and the Korean War which had started just a couple of months ago and would persist until 1953 when armistice was signed between the two Koreas.
