Spec Ops: The Line - Battle

- "Battle" as heard in the video game Spec Ops: The Line.
This actually comprises of multiple songs labeled "battle" in the game's files. I guess the idea was to allow for dynamic changes in tone during gameplay while still keeping the illusion of a single flowing song. I just put together a few of those pieces to try and make a moody battle theme.

“Welcome to hell, Walker.
_We’ve been waiting for you.”_
For me, that quote will be connected to the beginn of this song forever. Helluva game!
"You know Captain. We drove through this whole city to find you. We saw things. If you don't mind me asking... what was it like? How'd you survive all this?"
"Who said I did?"
'To kill for yourself is murder, to kill for your government is heroic, to kill for entertainment is harmless'
Game: "You pulled the trigger. You are holding the gun."
You: "You gave me the gun. You ordered me to pull the trigger."
Don't hate the player, hate the game. If the game, or your commanding officer, or your country, or whoever asks you to do something and tells you it's the right thing to do, the only thing to do, and then gets mad at you for doing it, there is a problem.

@@Mark-fc7tu on the other hand, you dont have too. You can drop the gun, you can walk away and you can turn off the computer. You always have a choice, and if it gets you punished then so be it. At least you didn’t hurt anybody, right? Thats the lesson the line is teaching you. You always had a choice, and you chose not to take it.
@@leatherlass6730 And if you quit right after beating the first level? By doing exactly what the developers said to do?
@@Mark-fc7tu I take it as the game only really criticizing you if you enjoyed, and didn't think about the context or consequences. If you did recognize that, and still played, with that awareness of the violent actions in-game, they're not criticizing you.
Such an eye-opening quote, makes you think about many things
"There's *ALWAYS* A choice."
*"No... There's really not"*
When you are dead, you don't really have a choice.
'No, there really isn't."
"If you were a better person, you wouldn't be here."
The riff of despair.
Love the fact the music playing over the combat in this game is all melancolly and blends together. Really sells what they are trying to go for.
None of the gun fights in spec ops feel "cool" it feels more just cut and dry.
Kills in here are not pleasant, nor are they rewarded. This story is pretty much what would happen if you took a videogame “hero” protagonist and put him in a real world war zone. And I love every second of it.
Yeah, the kills dont feel rewarding.. I noticed that in this game you are always needing more ammo.. Kills seen like a chore and a waste of ammo.. I think this is pretty much intended
This is where we differ. I really really enjoyed the combat in Spec Ops, it is my first cover based shooter though so maybe I just like them. I really enjoyed how scarce (relatively) the ammo was, the desperate slog through Hell felt really intense, while completely immersing me. I find myself playing the last mission on FUBAR every week or so.

it's very probable that the developers were trying to simulate the unpleasant emotions some people experience when killing other human beings.
Isn't it kinda amusing how the human seems to be the only animal that experiences guilt?
Predators in the wild don't care about their prey. Then again our society would probably be like borderlands if we didn't have that
It's amazing that Orcas feel a thirst for revenge/vengeance. Tilikum is the perfect example.
This OST right here, is the theme song of Spec Ops: The Line. This music represents guilt.
I agree, and it also represents a slow descension to hell

People who've never played or read up on the game will never understand the significance of this amazing piece of intellectually stimulating form of media. There is no game quite like this one.
@PuGa805 100% agree. This game really stands out. It's almost the equivalent of Saving Private Ryan amongst the typical romanticized war movies from Hollywood in my opinion

The Damned 33rd's Last Stand
It's pretty sad considering how desperate they were not to die
@@callumwebb4927 Well, they were damned to die in 3 days by dehydration anyway(Walker and his team destroyed the Marina). I think the Damned 33rd were rather determined to kill the Delta no matter the cost.
@@mhsohn6798 Probably, still really tragic. Even worse when you realise that (and yes, it's always been pointed out) all Walker needed to do was stop, go back and report his findings after Delta had that first encounter with the insurgents, and those men of the Damned would've been saved.
@@callumwebb4927 True. Although the troopers of the 33rd were far from being civil, they were trying to perform the will of Konrad with good intentions. Then, Walker intervened by his delusional heroism and screwed up everything. If he had not intervened, the survivors could have been saved.
"Captain Walker, we’re all what's left of the Damned 33rd"

fucking amazing piece of music. the penultimate mission, with you and Adams pushing through the bridge, gave me that rare feeling that games rarely provide, of really feeling a story, using the the mechanics of a video game itself, satirising even, the glut of generic COD shooters to really build a atmosphere or utter horror. that point in the game feels like total damnation, and again, is only enhanced by the inherent linearity of the medium. it just wouldn't feel the same in a film or a book. much like Bioshock, Spec Ops tells a story that wouldn't have the same impact if it was told in any medium other than a video game - using the mechanics and assumptions about the way the medium works to toy with the player, to provide a pay off.
Spec Ops The Line was the first Videogame in which I naturally held back throughout the firefights.
Well said!
@@novato455 yeah because they're American soldiers, you're killing your own countrymen, even if they're fake, the game still makes you feel like it's real which is an awesome sign.
This part is what truly broke me. As I pushed on I started to doubt myself more and more, asking myself why I was doing this. With each soldier I killed I felt sicker and sicker, and at the end of that I wanted to quit. I was on the verge of tears at that point. Fucking great game, 10/10

I always wonder at the people who say "the game made me do it, it's not like I had a choice" in frustration. You're playing a soldier, and a soldier's job is to "just follow orders", isn't it?

Finally a reflexion that doesnt blames the player, in my first run I was a kid and even if this game shocked me I knew I only did the choices I did because the game offered and guided me that way, is not my fault to continue and end the way it ended because of surrounding events
