480 people thatâs how many likes you got thatâs how many people feel the same way
You've just reminded me, omg! Random story time!
I didn't see the Little Mermaid in full until I was 15 and I could recognise the chorus of "Part of Your World" but I'd basically never heard the song, so for a long time I actually thought "Somewhere That's Green" and "Part of Your World" were the same song. It made sense to me cause, ya know, mermaids don't see much grass. That was the logic behind that strange assumption.
OH MY GOSH đđđ love this!! Thank you for sharing!!
im singing "Part of your world" for my Little Mermaid musical audition
Kate's Adventures when I was in second grade my friend watched little mermaid at her house for her birthday party and we were watching and we got to that part and I said oh my gosh it's somewhere that's green. None of the second grade girls knew what i was talking about
Theater Cecil Haha, that is too cute! You get a serious amount of cool points for knowing "Somewhere That's Green" in the second grade!
Kate's Adventures it shows my dad introduced me to musicals at a VERY young age.
I feel like there's a story behind the 'If you're auditioning for Sondheim, you have to sing Sondheim' line
It is because sondheim is very unique, and complicated. If you are auditioning for a show they need to see you can follow the correct notes for the show :)
Glad you asked weird tiny shoulder person đ
+Em Livingstone Right?? đđ

+Hannah Dykeman the trifecta of awesomeness!!! â€đ§đŒ
I am going to be in the Little mermaid jr. and I was going to sing part of your world, and I have an alto to soprano range but I want to sing in a mezzo voice but I just can't belt the end. I really want to be Ariel, but it could be too high for me to belt. (Keep in mind I'm 12 and this is for the kids camp at my community theater.)
If this comment wasnât from a year ago I would think you did this in El Paso
If itâs for a kids camp donât belt, just use a strong head voice. You probably wonât have much competition .
Eliza Hamilton yo!
And the saga of âweird tiny shoulder girlâ begins đ
Katherine, you are a plethora of knowledge. Thank you so much for being kind enough to share so much helpful and useful advice for all of us in your outstanding videos.
Me: I need an audition piece for little mermaid
CZcams: I have exactly what you need
I just discovered your channel and I have a big audition in two weeks- your videos are SO helpful! Thank you!!
this video is exactly what i needed! thanks for making all of your videos so informative/entertaining because before i found your channel, even the thought of pursuing a BFA terrified me, but now i am 99% sure that it's the path i should take
IVY!!!! đ I'm SO ridiculously happy to hear that- that's why I started making these in the first place!
And thank you :)
Let me know if you have any questions/video requests!
One of my dream roles is Quasimodo in Hunchback of Notre Dame (one of my favorite shows of all time), and I always thought If I Can't Love Her (key of F) would be a perfect audition song
Little Shop of Horrors is literally my favourite show ever lol youâll see me ramble about it on a lot of your videos lol
What a great video! This is very helpful advice. I'm always debating what songs to sing for auditions, and you've given me a few ways to look around that I haven't tried before.
Love the Sondheim exception. So very true.
Oh, yay!! So glad to hear it đ thanks
how do you feel about girls trying out with guys songs? I'm an alto and I do have some songs in mind (There's a Fine Fine Line, Maybe This Time, Nothing, etc.) but I like the way my voice sounds with Stars from Les Miserables. I'm trying out for Beauty and The Beast and Belle is a mezzo part so I'm a bit iffy, but I also am grateful for any part I get. Thoughts?
Hilari Parsons Hey Hilari! đ Depends on the audition situation, but in almost every case I'd recommend against singing a male song. Additionally, the personality/musicality of the song doesn't fit Belle. But that's just my opinion! đ
Katherine Steele thank you so much! I'll keep searching for songs đ
Hilari Parsons try using some of the tips I mentioned in the video--it'll definitely help!! đđđ
Katherine Steele I definitely will, I was just focusing on trying to find something that fit my voice part, but now I can make it even better, thanks so much! đ
I love that you talk about how to tell a story in say 1 minute, in the dance world well in song and dance sections the max amount of time you have to portray your character and storyline is 3 minutes, and half of that is only vocals. It can be done people!!
I'm gonna share my recent audition story in hoping it helps someone else! So I was auditioning for Fiddler On The Roof and I spent FOREVER trying to find 2 songs for the audition. They needed to be contrasting, show off my range and still suit the character (I was going for Hodel). So first I picked Home from Beauty and the Beast, because the slow sad kind of mourning is very similar to Far From The Home I Love, which is the song Hodel sings, and I had recently sung it at a recital so I was very familiar with it. I spent more time trying to find a second song, because it needed to be more uptempo and show more of my upper range (which Home didn't). I looked up shows that the composers of Fiddler had also done together, and found She Loves Me, which I had never heard of, and picked Vanilla Ice Cream because it seemed fun.
FUN FACT! When I showed up to the audition, a girl was singing Home to the creative team in the other room, and I automatically knew there was no way I could sing Home and still get the part I wanted. Sooooo I changed it last minute and performed God Help The Outcasts and Vanilla Ice Cream... GOOD NEWS! I still got the role of Hodel :D
Thatâs a great show! Iâve sang far from the home I love for a class workshop but Iâm a soprano though
Iâm auditioning for ensemble in my school musical and this helped sooo much. Thank you for the help!!
I auditioned for Annie with I Speak Six Language from 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. I ended up getting the role of Lily St. Regis. I think it worked? I picked some good songs and then narrowed it down to that one.
Omg that is the perfect song
lol i auditioned for patty in grease with that song... iconic
@@sophiadelagarza4530 ugh icon
At Michigan thespian fest this year they put on 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and it was so gooooooooood
Oh my gosh, I have auditions in a couple of weeks and this just popped up! Thank you!!!đđ

+Miss Squish omg yay exciting!!! Break a leg!! đŠđ
Thank you so much. I've been so nervous about my upcoming audition for Jason in Falsettos and I've been trying to find a good song for my audition. Using your tips, I've narrowed my options down to a few in my range. One of them is the song/song clip "My Father's a Homo" from the same musical. I'm really excited and your tips helped my audanxiety (that's what I call it) so much. Thank you so so so much
Just A Broadway Sock Youâre so lucky to be auditioning for Falsettos! I hope you get Jason!
AFTER YOU MENTIONED THE SIMILARITY BETWEEN SOMEWHERE THATS GREEN AND PART OF YOUR WORLD I LEGIT SCREAMED i never noticed it omg
I'm in 6th grade right now and i heard in 9th grade we are gonna perform a musical. I have been so excited so this is helpful.
This made me happy because I'm auditioning for Audrey in December, so the shout-out to Little Shop was great.
WOW! I love these videossssss!!!
Thank you, Kate!! â€ïžâ€ïž
One of my go to's is Waving Through A Window.
Omg I love Disney and I did Little shop of Horrors with my musical theater program and never realized that đ€ŠđœââïžđźđČ
These tips are so helpful thank you for making this!â€
+daaiisy princess thank YOU! đŠ happy to help
Hi Katherine! I have a request for a Theatre Thursday video: Can you please do a video that just makes a list(s) of several shows that have the same genre? I know you listed a ton in here, but I feel like you could cover more genres and more shows, because you're awesome like that. :)
I love the striped pillows in the background!
+Felix Catta thanks!!
No problem! Love your videos!
This is a video I wish more people would make! This has some really points!
Thanks! đ
I absolutely loooove your videos and the content and advice you give. It's so informative yet so entertaining! Do you know of any other channels that offer the same type of content you do? Thanks so much!!
Thanks, Gabriella! Not really--that's actually why I started making videos. Broadway.com is one of my fave theatrey channels, though. So that's always fun to watch!
4:00 OMG! So funny! I'm watching this video because I am in fact auditioning for 13!
Hey Kat, I know this video is kinda old now but Iâm auditioning for legally blonde JR and really want Paulette (or Elle but I personally think I am more suited to Paulette) and I need to pick an audition song that isnât from the show. It says to prepare a ballad. It doesnât specifically say 32 bars but Iâve auditioned for this theatre company before and usually the audition song maximum is 2 mins. Iâm thinking along the lines of kindergarten boyfriend or a section of I wonât say Iâm in love because it gives me similar vibes to Ireland.
Such amazing tips! Thank you so much.
these are REALLY GOOD advices!!!
+Hannah Yu Thank you Hannah!! Xx happy to help! #TheatreThursdayFam đđđ
I love your videos they're so funny yet so relatable.
+The Awkward Flower Child đŠđ thank you!!
i'm auditioning for tallulah in bugsy malone and i've been binge watching these videos so ty :]]
Hey! I just started watching your videos and I enjoy them a lot! I feel a lot of theatre accounts on youtube are just talking about basic broadway gossip which can be entertaining but isn't useful information but you really give aspiring artists advice from the eyes of someone who is experiencing things herself which I love! I was just curious what college you go to? (you might've mentioned it in a past video I just haven't seen all of your videos yet lol) Thank you! Definitely subsribing
Hey Tate!!! Thank you so much, that really means a lot. And welcome to the Theatre Thursday Fam!!! đđ
For a few reasons, mainly so I don't seem biased, I don't disclose exactly where I live/study. But I can tell you that I had to make some decisions at some point involving Ithaca, Otterbein, Hartt, Montclair, Rider, Texas State, Oklahoma State, Shenandoah Conservatory, Millikin, and Utah đ
This is my first year in musical theater and my school is putting on a production of Once Upon a Mattress. I'm auditioning for Princess Winifred, even though I know I won't get it because it's my first year. Since it was written in 1959 and has a jazzy feel to it, so I was thinking of doing Feeling Good by Nina Simone (I have a low voice for a female), but do you have any suggestions? My knowledge on musicals and their songs is very limited.
Dalia Moreno I'm just a sophomore in Musical Theatre in college, but I would recommend something both fun, belty, and princess-y. Maybe 'Morning Person' from Shrek the Musical.
Thank you so much! I'll definitely look into it! đ
Dalia Moreno I hope it helps.
It is a bit high for my voice (as most songs are), but I'll see if my vocal coach can transpose it. Thank you so much for the advice. I was also thinking b of doing Here I Am from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels...?
Iâm auditioning for âOnce Upon a Mattressâ this year.
I'm going to audition for Addams family, and I have no idea what to pick still, but this has been super helpful, thank you!!
FlutterWho SameS
Im auditioning for Wednesday and I'm singing Jewish for you. 10/10 would recommend
Iâm auditioning for Annie the musical tommorow and this really helped
Wish me luck đ€đ»đ€đ»đ€đ»đ€đ»đ€đ»đ€đ»đ€đ»
I canât believe Iâm just seeing this now đ I wish I had these tips a month ago. I would have sang something from Hello Dolly for an audition if I knew this. Then again the auditioners were two 13 year olds đ I love this video.
New subscriber! Love your tips!
Welcome to the #TheatreThursdayFam đđđ
I'm planning to audition for The Greatest Showman in June. The thing is, it's weird and basically, as long as I sign up I will definitely get a part. But I have to have an audition so the casting directors can decide which character I would be best for. I'm probably going to do A Million Dreams from TGS or Waving Through A Window from DEH, because I can sing both of those fairly well (though I'm not a good singer at all lol)
I'm doing auditions for Annie next week! I'll try to keep updating on who I get!
I ALREADY LOVE YOU!!
I already love YOU!!! đ
This year, my elementary school preformed "The Little Mermaid Jr." and I auditioned for Ursula but I sang "Part Of Your World" because it was the only song I could choose that was remotely close to "Poor Unfortunate Souls" and the cruel irony was I got Jetsam, Ursula's female henchman while my friend, who I was better than no lie, got Ursula. I say I was better since she didn't want to sing the head voice lines and offstage she had to use a microphone and sing what we all called the "Ahhs" that were extremely high and I almost did them for her. It was a let-down but I was in more scenes. I know this isn't what musical theater is about, but it was my first speaking line and I nailed it.
I feel like she'd be perfect as Tracy in Hairspray
I love your channel so much! It's super helpful and you need more subs :)) I was wondering how you personally play the villian? I'm currently playing Mrs Hannigan and tips would be great! xxx
You're so sweet, thank you! đđ i'll talk about it more in an upcoming video, but the main thing about villains: they don't realize they're the villain. In their own minds, everything they do is perfectly justified. Like, they're rarely being intentionally evil--their own ideas/motivations just go against the main character's. (If that makes sense haha)
And congrats on Miss Hannigan!! đ
+Katherine Steele that was very helpful thank you!
Hey people of the comments is it okay to sing a song 1.) originally meant for the opposite gender and 2.) from the show you're auditioning for. I'm auditioning for Annie and I really want to sing You're Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile but I'm not sure if it's okay to. They just said any song but I don't want to seem lazy by choosing a song from the show, you know?
+Isabella Foriska Hey Isabella!
1) in general, your audition song should match your casting type (which you can learn more about here: czcams.com/video/wt0toIsjz2g/video.html)
2) as long as the auditors didn't say not to, you can totally sing from the show!
Katherine Steele okay thank you so so much!!!
I needed this
Glad to hear it!! (see you at rehearsal tonight lol)
I'm auditioning for A Christmas Carol on Saturday! (Probably one of Cratchit's daughters). I plan to sing God Help The Outcasts from Hunchback. I think it's okay. Also, Alan Menken.
Go to a used bookstore or music store. Singer's Anthology has lots of unique songs that can help.
There's a used bookstore underneath my local library-- I always find plays/librettos/sheet music selection books there!
Your videos r so helpful! I auditioned for Beauty and the Beast, good role. I auditioned for The Nightmare Before Christmas, great role! And soon Iâm gonna audition for Charlotteâs Web!
I really like your videos, they're very helpful. You should do a video of you singing.
Thanks, Maddision! đđđ It's mainly a joke, but I sang a little bit in today's video if you haven't already czcams.com/video/lcIdexJobrc/video.html&lc=z12xfv2jvobpwh5g404cj3nygtaajl4rm50
Okay, so I followed all of these tips for my school musical, and I got the lead!
I study at Actor Therapy with Ryan Scott Oliver and Lindsay Mendez and they've helping find great new songs for me.
I'm auditioning for Newsies soon and I have to sing something in the style of the show, what would you recommend?
I might do I love play reharsel, were doing the addams family and i can sing it.It has alot of personality wich is what they want but is kinda a bit too upbeat
So at my school weâre doing Into the Woods and I want to play the part of Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, or Rapunzel (preference in that order) and I want to sing Santa Fe from Newsies starting from âlet me goâ so I donât have to curse. Because itâs at school. And I canât curse. ANYWAYS Iâm not sure if itâs the best. Iâm a girl, and itâs sung by Jack Kelley (a boy) BUT Iâm very confident while singing it and itâs right in my vocal range. I love singing it. What should I do?
Vivienne Grace how did your audition go? :)
i have an audition for Sweeney Todd in a few days, and haven't done anything with it so far.... thank you 2016 Katherine!!!
When she said the somewhere thatâs green thing I major flashbacks because I played ronnette in Little Shop of Horrors and every time we did mike check, Audrey would sing some where thatâs green and I would think it was little mermaid đ§ââïžđ
I'm in 10th grade and i have an audition on Wednesday for our musical play and I'm so nervous this really help!
This helped me so much...Thank you!!!!!
Glad it helped!! đđ
Hi! I have an audition tomorrow for "Oliver!". The production company I am doing it with know me quite well and I was going to sing "Freeze Your Brain" from Heathers but I am second guessing myself. I am just auditioning for any part I can get, not very specific. I have a baritone voice
Hopefully you can suggest something great
I was JUST in 13 the musical as Charlotte!!
New to your channel but have watched every videođŹ keep posting. How do you have so much knowledge about writers and such? I know it's accumulated over time but I feel like knowing about a lot of different writers and actors in the theatre world is a really helpful thing to have overall. Any advice on how exactly to study up?
Thank you, Emma!! And welcome to the Theatre Thursday Fam!!! đđ
Learning about Musical Theatre is a big hobby of mine. I read a lot (both books and internet).
A good way to gain some knowledge: play the Wikipedia game. Start with a show you like (for example, CAROUSEL) and then start reading. Once you hit a link on a composer/show/actor/etc. you don't know or interests you, click on it! Then keep going.
Also, CZcams. Lots of CZcams. I always click on suggested videos (Show People with Paul Wontorek on Broadway.com is one of my favorite series)
you have helped me so much
+Lydia Rutkowski â€â€ happy to help love!! Xx
I audition for Millie from Thoroughly Modern Millie and I sung History of Wrong Guys from Kinky Boots and the panel loved it. Didn't get cast because I was blonde :(
hey katherine, im new to ur page but im obsessed. Ive always been really big into theatre and writing, but terrified of being on stage. That kept me in the "behind the scenes roles" for most of my life. Ur page has given me a new strength, reignited my passion that i didn't realize died out a little. I want to audition for anything, to kind of help me get that fear out of the way, any suggestions? The people i have performed in front of (usually accidentally) say i should go for it. But i dont know where to begin, I want my dreams to finally be realized. even if that just means having the courage to face my fears.
Every conversation of mine turns into a Kelli OâHara shrine
Hey Katherine!! I have an audition for Peter Pan and I wanna go out for Wendy, which songs do you suggest? It would be really helpful to get your advice (I have to do 32 bars of said song)!!
I also have a question for you.
What if youâre auditioning for a Frank Wildhorn Musical like Jekyll and Hyde or Dracula the Musical and youâre auditioning for the role of Lucy (Jekyll and Hyde) or Mina (Dracula the Musical)? What should you sing?
Hey Katherine! I'm properly going to audition for Beauty and Beast in a month, and I always plan for early. So I'm trying to decide what song to audition with, and I was thinking "Once Upon A December" from Anastasia. The only criteria they gave was that it had to be from a show of similar sound.
+Sidney White Hey Sidney! Personally, I think that would be fine đ You can check out Alan Menken's other works for ideas too! Break a leg đ
I have a question. Should you use, like, âgroup numbersâ if youâre auditioning for a single person? For example, âgroup numbersâ like In from Carrie or Seize The Day From Newsies, that have the whole group singing them, or should you choose a song that is a solo song from a musical?
I'm not sure if you have already, but maybe do a video on "Stereotypes" and how to use it to your advantage rather than disadvantage. :)
whats your opinion of 'overdone' audition songs? I feel memory from cats suits my voice and i
this is so helpful oml
Happy to help!!
I really want to sing The Room Wherw It Happens but I dunno whether to sing Hamilton or Burrâs part lmao
isn't that Burr's solo except for like one line at the beginning lol
