Best audition rule: Don’t do what Rachel Berry does
Haha!! Amazing x
Rachel Berry is an icon and you can’t disagree.
jaqwau I hate her

I sang lifeboat from Heathers for Frozen and got Olaf. 😂
Couldn’t be the most opposite roles 😂
Hi I will be auditioning for the role of JD’s mom from Heathers, I will be singing Waving Through A Window from Dear Evan Hansen
*kat* that’s so sick and twisted
i love it
JD’s mom is dead ?
Ahh I get it 😂😂😂😂😂
kat but jd mum is only in a small part of it why don’t you go for Veronica’s mum or ensemble

I sang Dancing Queen auditioning for Eponine and I got it!!!
This is iconic!!! 🙌🏻
Georgie Ashford Thanks! It was a risk but it actual paid off because it showed off my voice really well! It goes from low to high and it has a melancholic vibe which I connected with
😄
Is dancing queen song by abba?
Hi, I will be auditioning for Elsa from Frozen and I will be singing burn from Hamilton.
When people say "oh, sing a song you know really really well", all I can think of is how Rachel followed that advice in Glee and bombed her drama school audition because of it.
Hi I'll be auditioning for Michael from be more chill and I'll be singing blue from Heather's the musical
You really remind me of Zoella .... like a theatre fanatic type 😂😂
Jenna Ward omg I am so glad someone agrees with me!! 😂😂
Her voice sounds exactly like Zoe
Haha thanks I think! xx
I think we're from similar areas so that might be why! Haha
I sang think of me and defying gravity for a musical audience, got the part🎉
Johanna from Sweeney Todd 😍 😍 😍

@@GeorgieAshford thanks ☺️☺️☺️
Can you do a video on specific songs you wouldn’t recommend for an audition? Live overrated songs maybe? Xxx
Of course! xx
On my own 🤣🤣
Hi I will be auditioning for Javert from Les Mis and I will be singing more than survive from be more chill
I failed an audition for my college production of Legally Blonde because my drama teacher told us all to sing 'Omigod you guys' and it's not in my vocal range, he basically set some of us up to fail.
Oh no!!! How frustrating!
I'm doing legally blond (6th grade) I'm trying out for Elle woods
5:06 The phrase "know like the back of your hand" comes from the old way people used to learn to read music. It was called solmization (similar but not exactly the same as the modern version of solmization) and one of the ways people remembered it was by visualising the notes on the palm or the back of their hand. Thus the phrase evolved, as you had to "know the back of your hand" very well to read music fluenty.
Oh my gosh how interesting thank you so much for sharing!
@@GeorgieAshford You're welcome! Your vids are amazing btw
Thank you!
That isn't true lol! it is a literal meaning the thing you are thinking of Guidonian hand but that is not where the phrase came from and it had no connection to music at all ..
The first time it was penned was in connection to knowing an area of land or sea so well it that they would know it like the back of their hand as in people would know a part of their body not covered by clothing or hair so that would be their face or hands and as you require a shiny surface to create a reflection or a mirror the part of the body they would see most often would be the back of their hands...
Hi Georgie! Love #5 tip. Much agreed :) I always recommend that as well and try to make sure I follow that rule myself too when auditioning. Love following your channel. I haven't had the opportunity to work on the West End yet so your channel is really informative for me here in the States. Thanks again!
Just found your channel and loving it! Thanks for this video :) :) Really helpful!
On the same subject don't forget to research what your song is about and prepare a basic summary of the plot in case you're asked! Totally embarassed myself before at an audition when I was asked the plot of the show and my mind just went blank!
Yes so true!
I sang popular for my audition of heather chandler and ended up getting Veronica 😂
Thoroughly enjoyed this!!
Maybe you could say about not using the most popular/overused songs as casting directors hear them a lot so you want to stand out a bit too by singing something different...? I’ve made one of these mistakes before; made too many cuts to a song and soon regretted it once in the room😂🤦🏼♀️
I have been bingeing this channel so much recently! Love you Georgie
Thank you so much Milly!! Xxx
You’re just the best CZcamsr , this channel is SO helpful💗💗
Aw thank you!! 💖💖💖
I'm so glad you didn't outright say "don't sing ___ song" because I am SICK of hearing people say "dOn'T sInG AnYthInG fRoM WickED" LITERALLY WICKED IS THE FIRST MUSICAL I EVER SAW, IT'S THE ONE MUSICAL I KNOW ENTIRELY BY HEART, AND ELPHABA IS PERFECTLY WITHIN MY CASTING TYPE. I DON'T MAKE THE RULES OK I JUST KNOW MY RANGE AND I KNOW WHAT I WANT.
Having said that I am working on expanding my rep book to other stuff too, but if I'm ever really stuck, The Wizard And I might just end up being a life saver for me!
THANK YOU for offering solid advice without belittling people's taste in musicals! It's ok to like something that's "overdone"!
Hi Lovely video as alwayssss! I would love a video on how u have set out ur rep as in what folder/book you have used and best way to give ur sheet music to the pianist! Would be very useful for my drama school auditions xxx

Hi! I will be auditioning for the role of Heather Chandler from Heathers and I will be singing When He Sees Me from Waitress
Once I sang lifeboat from heathers for into the woods and got little red🤷🏼♀️😂
What camera do you use and what editing software? Love your musical theatre audition tips videos
Love this video it's explained really well but it made me think would you be able to a video explaining theatre terminology that would be really interesting
Oo good idea!
hi! i'm auditioning for a musical theatre group at ny school but i don't know what song to sing.
i'm thirteen, and a mezzo soprano / alto ( i'm not sure but i do have a larger vocal range in the lower keys, and can go as high as a E5
any suggestions? my audition's on wednesday and i really wanna get in but it's going to be super competitive ...
Lifeboat from heathers is a pretty good song I'm an alto but still able to reach those top notes also death is just around the coroner from Adams family
I'm auditioning for Eliza, My Fair Lady, and I know it's a little out of my range. . . don't know what song to do. . . any suggestions??
Hi I am just wandering if their are any shows or musicals that I could audition for as I have been in school of rock and jophese and goodnight Mr tom and I have been in the assemble but I am wanting to push myself to sing solo or say lines. Many thanks jack
I can't sing or act for the life of me lol, but I love your channel and find all of your videos so interesting!!!

Frozen the musical for the west end are holding an open call in Glasgow next week and I am going for Anna, I’ll be singing the end of journey to the past 💕
I’m auditioning for honors drama at my school and I’m singing if that’s what it is from 13
I am auditioning for Matilda the musical the teen ensemble and i can sing alto and soprano and idk what to sing
Hi!!! I'm new to musicals but my highschool is directing Urinetown and I would like to audition for Penelope pennywise. But I don't know what songs to sing that will showcase that c6, any suggestions??
Do you think it’s ok if you sing a song that isn’t usually sung from a current musical? There’s always those 3 or 4 songs everyone goes to, but there’s a bunch that get looked over in the process. What do you think??
İ sang white christmas at my audition for Annie
What do you think of auditioning with Wishing you were somehow here again from phantom? Is the break near the end too long?
I just found your channel and I love it! I’m not even a musical theatre actress (I’m an acting student), I just love your channel xx
Oh wow thank you so much! Xx
I'm auditioning for a 9 to 14 theatre group to do 33 shows and its puss in boots and I have no idea what to sing I have a low ish voice, any ideas?
i doubt you will see this but i have a bit of a problem, im going for elle in a small production of legally blonde however they have given us the songs they want us to sing for it and i can only
sing in the high notes on a good day, any tips? love your channel btw really helped me out recently xx
I think it's all about relaxing and putting It into a place in your voice that is more comfortable- don't push it! Thank you! xx
What kind of songs do you take to an audition? Is it just musical songs or can you sing like pop songs? (I’ve never done an audition before and would like to know for future me!)
I’m going to a summer school experience day at emil dale academy, we have to bring a song. I’m at a loss of what to sing?! I’m a low mezzo-sop ( I belt better lower) any recommendations??
Maybe something from Seussical/A little Princess? Newsies also has a great song called watch that happens!
jason robert brown to stop writing beautiful songs with hard music challenge
😂 that would be a challenge indeed
what about songs with swearing in? what’s your thoughts on that?
I sang one song glory from rent for an audition for a gentleman’s guide to love and Murder which is not genre appropriate or my casting type. Ah the mistakes you make when you’re first starting out.
I have an audition coming up for this musical I also auditioned for last year but was giving a reserved position. In the audition we sing a song and try and pick up some choreography. So atm I am trying to pick the song I am going to sing. I’m tied between Legally blonde (the song) which is more a build up song that would showcase my voice nicely or So much better (from legally blonde) which I could showcase how enthusiastic I could be. So please give me advice one what one to pick or if I should try any other songs?💖💖
Gabi Rose xo what musical/part are you auditioning for? if it’s more an enthusiastic, upbeat character, go for so much better, and vice Versa if it’s the other way. Good luck! Xx
Lauren Mac yeah it’s a more up beat one and thank you!!! Xx
Was at an audition and two people in my group sang two different Jason Robert Brown songs, long ones at that too - my heart just went out to the poor pianist!
Pianist was fantastic and managed fine, but there were several parts where they did simplify the accompaniment, which I guess is another reason for not picking something to difficult as it’s more likely that your accompaniment won’t sound like it did when you were practicing!
(I guess that’s just a general audition note though because I’ve had an audition before where I’ve had an easy piece and the pianist then jazzed it up a little when they were playing which threw me a bit - just know your songs well enough that if the accompaniment isn’t what you’re expecting, you’ll still be fine!)
Exactly!! xx
What age did you audition for drama school?
When I was younger (child) I went to a panto audition and they gave us each a section of the song How Far I'll go. Me not being a massive fan of disney hadn't heard the song and I messed up the timings because I didn't know it. I asked everyone who got the part if they had known the song and they did! Still get frustrated at that today!
That is so frustrating!!!
I know this may be personal but is the west end a good job not just fun but does it get you good money and always have jobs or is it like sometimes you get a job but sometimes you may not have jobs for like years
Hey so I was wondering would a song from the sound of music be a good fit for an audition
Yes if it’s in the right style!
Hi I know you work on west end have you ever considered working on a musical tour?
Should you always sing a song from a musical when auditioning for one? I'm starting out my musical theatre career hopefully
It depends on the musical! But yes I'd recommend it in most cases x
3:23 OMG is it Darren Criss' voice ?!?! I love it hahahahaha
When I saw him singing this song 2 years ago I was like.... Omg this can't be real hahaha
Is satisfied from Hamilton a good song for an audition for a good college such as Julliard or should I pick a different song? 💓✨
I think if you really enjoy singing it go for it but as it’s quite well known atm due to Disney plus they may be hearing it a lot! Xx
Interesting. X
I'm auditioning for shrek the musical to play dragon what should I sing??
Thierri Clarke maybe One Night With You or Let Yourself Go from All Shook Up?
@@1broadwaystar thank you x
Why is it bad to sing a song from the musical I auditioning for ? I know you shouldn’t but why not ? Like if I need to convince them that I could be Evan hansen way not sing waving or words fail or for forever?
I know I’m with you it does make sense! But they don’t like it for some reason! 🤷♀️
I'm a girl and I'm going to audition for the part of Oliver from oliver twist and GOD I dont know what to sing
Edit: I got the part of bill Sykes in the end lol I'm happy
Do you recommend any dramatic monologues for auditions cause I am really struggling...
I realize I'm about 2 years too late, but my favorite monlogue I've ever come across is Ken's monologue from "Red," it has a bit of swearing, but most of it could easily be substituted or gotten rid of entirely.
One song I could really connect to is good kid from the lightning thief the musical, and I’ve always wanted to play him. But my next audition is for the lightning thief the musical lol so idk it’s definitely not a good idea to sing a sing from the musical they said to do whatever so I’m not under to much pressure I doubt they care I might do the Aaron burr part of dear theidosia, or don’t let me go shreck. I’m trying to audition for Grover and dear theidosia is kinda like tree on the hill and I guess don’t let me go it’s kinda like drive. I’ve already practiced this much for this musical I already bought a script before I even knew about this audition so I already know this by heart
bro ur so lucky u get to do the lightning thief. i also bought a script but my director keeps putting it off 😭😭
I actually got to see you as Christine Daaé!!!
Hello, I would like to audition for Christine Daae and I will be singing Guns and Ships from Hamilton for you ✌️😂
weirdly enough, the harder songs are the ones that I usually nail, even if I'm nervous. Like, I will 1000% nail "wishing you were somehow here again" or "think of me" but I will easily fail at easier songs 😂
😂😂😂😂
@@GeorgieAshford omg, I can't believe you replied 😱😍
I'll fail at Think of Me, but if it's the beginning of Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, I can nail it on the first run.
I have a question! I've been told to only sing Sondheim when I audition for a Sondheim show. So does the pianist rule still apply there?
I've wondered this myself (and I'm not sure what the correct answer is), but here are a couple of thoughts: First of all, not all Sondheim songs are created equal when it comes to challenges of accompaniment, so I'd advise picking one of his songs that's easier to play (for a woman, that might be something like "Broadway Baby" or "Send in the Clowns." Another thought is to do a song with Sondheim's lyrics but another composer's music--there are a number of good female solos that are very playable in Gypsy (or Do I Hear a Waltz? if you're looking for something less mainstream). Just don't do "I Feel Pretty" or "Somewhere" from West Side Story, as they're horrendously overdone. "I Have a Love" might be okay.
Russell Stinson thanks! That's really helpful advice.
Hello! I am auditioning for Mrs Honey from Matilda The Musical and l will be singing He- had it coming! From Chicago! 🤣
My favorite thing I've ever done is sing good morning balrime at a KRISTIN CHENOWETH BROADWAY CAMP audition 💀💀💀
I’m auditioning for ensemble in Highschool musical the musical
It’s my first show
PLEASE HELP
i have a question,
i’m gonna be auditioning for a musical theatre company soon and i was wondering what songs you think would be good?
i’m 13
i’m a soprano (but it would be helpful if they’re not all high notes)
yeah :) i’m a bit nervous that i’m gonna choose the wrong song
i might sing “i say no” from uk heathers? i dunno 🤷🏼♀️
I totally agree with the comment before me, do lamest place in the world from 13!! it's a good song to show off your range but isn't too high :) i did it a while ago, and it's also not too overdone (yet) break a leg!
More to the story it was in shrek but it got cut it is a gorgeous song! Don’t imagine many if anyone else will sing it good luck xxx
Maybe something from Disney - Almost There (Princess and the Frog), When Will My Life Begin (Tangled) or A Spoonful of Sugar (Mary Poppins) are a few examples. Chances are you will know a few disney songs quite well and at least one will really suit your personality.
First thought was something out of Bye Bye Birdie--either "One Boy" or "How Lovely to Be a Woman"--but not sure if these are too overdone or if your looking for something more contemporary.
to everyone who’s replied above
(i’m not sure if you’ll see this but oh well)
thank you all for the suggestions! i’ve decided to choose “one perfect moment” from bring it on as i recently discovered that most songs taylor louderman sings are in my vocal range.
thank you for giving me ideas tho!
from abi
If a song is ‘written’ in another accent say American do you sing it in that accent or your own accent? *assuming the show doesn’t require an accent*
It's usually up to you! Whatever is best for the show x
Ahhh fabs! Xx
The song FROM NOW ON from the Greatest Showman would be a good pick for me. I already sang it a few times (once in front of some friends as well who liked my performance of it), so I know the song very well concerning rhythm, melody, etc.
I know the emotions of the song very well and also the character who sings it and the song matches my vocal range.
And it is not a current West End song
Love that song!
Should I audition with a song from Anastasia like in my dreams?
If you can then yes
How do I decide my casting type in a song?
Basically, if the part you're looking to get is the Young Idealistic Leading Man, you're better off singing Pippin's "Corner of the Sky" for your audition rather than Sweeney Todd's "Epiphany". If you're auditioning for the female lead's snarky and jaded best friend, you'd choose "Not At All In Love" from The Pajama Game over "Think of Me" from Phantom of the Opera.
The idea is to help the director decide if they can picture you in the role you're auditioning for, so the song you audition with needs to match the character you want to play.
starts at 1:10
U might love our comedy song "It's All About Me"
God, I have such a hard time with #2. I cannot connect to 90% of soprano repertoire and I’m undeniably soprano. It’s all so... flowery and lovey-dovey.
Send help.
have you heard of the lightning thief musical? even if you haven’t, the song my grand plan is a soprano song and it’s something different than most
I know what you mean! There's some great soprano songs that aren't so lovey dovey though! Just takes a bit of digging to find them xx
This is my homework for performing arts college
I’m saying I might get the audition because of you so please can you
