Anyone else notice how James sings "nice white kids" with a rasp on "white"? It creates just enough dissonance to indicate that something is wrong in that part of the song but not to ruin the mood of the song.

  • @cifratv
    @cifratv Před 3 lety +329

This scene is cinematic perfection and one of the best examples of how to translate a stage musical into cinema (and I mean PURE CINEMA, the transitions, the choreography, the framing, the build up of some characters and conflict, how subtlely Corny Collins moves to the background in favor of the kids, who are the real stars of the show, and what the audience should be mainly paying attention for... the enthusiasm of the girls at home... it's not only great music and perfectly written lyrics...it's cinema at its purest). I am still in shock this film had zero nominations to the Oscars despite the critical and audience acclaim... jelaousy? It was a deeper film than the two may Oscar contenders (There will be blood and No country for Old Men), and as impeccably directed as them, but just more fun to watch, and making something complex - to handle discrimination, segregation, and the bigotry - look easy, while never falling into patronizing the audience. One of the best movies of the Century so far (and one of the most rewatchables)

    • @LadyoftheLab
      @LadyoftheLab Před rokem +3

I agree strongly, with the exception of your poor take on No Country For Old Men, widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, and incredibly deep for the portrayal of a villain who seems to appear as an unstoppable portent of death whilst also being innately fair, in the form of Anton Chigurr. Hairspray is pretty rad, though.

    • @cifratv
      @cifratv Před rokem

@@LadyoftheLab poor take? Nope. NCfoM is a masterpiece but it doesn't have the poignancy that Hairspray overall achieves in themes, scope and ambition. NCfoM is introvert and Hairspray is extrovert, let's say. Therefore, Hairspray's ambitions are to reach as much people as they can with their message, while NCfoM is basically reflective and therefore one has to dig into it. Obviously I think Hairspray is the most important film out of both (and actually the best, as it is also an instant genre landmark)

    • @LadyoftheLab
      @LadyoftheLab Před rokem

@@cifratv It is worth acknowledging my own biases here - I much prefer NCFOM, which is obviously obvious. I disagree that having to read deeper into the film makes it inherently worse than Hairspray, because they talk about very different issues - Hairspray tells an obvious-in-hindsight point about segregation and bigotry, which, while undeniably important issues to speak about, and done in a landmark fashion, are still sort of common issues to speak of (the idea of speaking about them isn't groundbreaking in and of itself, and no racist is going to watch Hairspray and come out not still being a racist). NCFOM's depth exists because the film isn't just the surface-level narrative. It asks questions, and is food for a great deal of thought. It asks you, the audience member, about the nature of evil - Hairspray does not ask, it tells you the nature of its key evils. Whilst it does achieve the stated goal (reaching as many people as it can with the message it has), it won't be remembered for its message as much as it will be remembered for being a great time to watch.
It's true, however, that cinema does not need to be challenging or revolutionary, and indeed Hairspray is one of the greatest musicals of all time. But to claim, as you did earlier, that it is 'deeper' than NCFOM, is a complete mistake. There is no depth in Hairspray - it tells you exactly what it wants you to hear. There is no "deeper" to go.

As musicals go, Hairspray itself is about a solid 7/10 for me. But this film is a soft 10 and the best iteration of Hairspray, period. Musical or not. And this scene is a perfect sample of everything that’s so great about the film as a whole. 1) Perfect casting all around. 2) Beautiful and creative directing. It’s just satisfying to watch. 3) it captures the essence of the time period so well. 4) the choreography that looks so fun. It makes you want to get up and dance which is perfect because that’s exactly what is being done in the context of the story.
Probably one of the best movie musicals, especially musical film adaptations ever.

    Lyrics 🤣
    Hey there, teenage Baltimore!
    Don't change that channel!
'Cause it's time for the Corny Collins Show!
    Brought to you by
    Ultra Clutch Hairspray!
    Oh
    Every afternoon
    When the clock strikes four
    (Bop-bee-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba, bee-ba)
    A crazy bunch of kids
    Crash through that door yeah
    (Bop-bee-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba, bee-ba)
    They throw off their coats
    And leave the squares behind
And then they shake it, shake it, shake it
    Like they're losing their mind
    You'll never see them frown
'Cause they're the nicest kids in town
    Every afternoon
    You turn your T.V. on
(Na, na, na, na, na, na-na-na-na)
And we know you turn the sound up
When your parents are gone yeah
(Na, na, na, na, na, na-na-na-na)
And then you twist and shout
    For your favorite star
And once you've practiced every step
    That's in your repertoire
    You better come on down
And meet the nicest kids in town
    Nice white kids
Who like to lead the way
    And once a month
    We have our "Negro day!"
And I'm the man who keeps it spinnin' round
    Mr. Corny Collins
With the latest, greatest Baltimore sound!
    So every afternoon
    Drop everything
    (Bop-bee-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba, bee-ba)
Who needs to read and write
When you can dance and sing?
    (bop-bee-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba, bee-ba)
    Forget about your algebra
    And calculus
You can always do your homework
    On the morning bus
    Can't tell a verb from a noun
They're the nicest kids in town
    Roll call!
    I'm Amber!
    Brad!
    Tammy!
    Fender!
    Brenda!
    Sketch!
    Shelley!
    I.Q.!
    Lou Ann!
    Joey!
    Mickey!
    Becky!
    Jesse!
    Carla!
    Polly!
    Maureen!
    Doreen!
    And I'm...Link!
So, if every night you're shaking
    As you lie in bed
    (Mony-mony, ooh, mony-mony)
    And the bass and drums
    Are pounding in your head
    (Mony-mony, ooh, mony-mony)
    Who cares about sleep
    When you can snooze in
    School?
    They'll never get to college
    But they sure look cool
    Don't need a cap and a gown
    'Cause they're the nicest
    Kids in town
    They're the nicest, nicest
    They're the nicest, nicest
    They're the sugar 'n spicest
    The nicest kids in...
    Kids in town
