- Watch in HQ Kate Silverton appeared in this episode back in 2003. Time Commanders is a series of programmes made by Lion TV for BBC Two that ran for two seasons from 2003 to 2005.
It uses an edited version of the game engine behind the real-time strategy game Rome: Total War by the Creative Assembly to recreate famous battles of the ancient world.
The battles are replayed by 4-player teams from diverse backgrounds. The teams are unfamiliar with computer games, to make sure their gaming skills do not influence their success. After a brief introduction of the battle, including an overview of military units, terrain and available forces, the players have to develop a strategy and then deploy their forces. Two of the players are selected as generals, who will direct the battle and have access to a strategic map. The other two players are designated lieutenants, the units are indirectly controlled by the lieutenants, who issue commands to program assistants, who in turn use the game interface to control the units. - Zábava
Al Murray is a very intellectual historian so to me it's not too surprising that he would be a good general in time commanders.
nusbacher is the only thing i remember from this, he was a legend
Creative Assembley really messed up with some of the factions particularly patraying Egypt as being in the bronse age. They were part of Alexaders empire
If they had continued this for a little longer, they might have used a modified version of Medieval II TW.
Rome did use the phalanx formation early on but abandoned it after they realized it was useless in the rocky terrain in Italy( as the phalanx works best on flat ground, as it will maintain it's cohesion better).
RTW soundtrack really is exceptional
Ah yes, the one where the Pub Landlord is actually a better general than most of the others in the show.
Actually, they don't always play as the victor, there are some cases where they played the loser and some of them won, some of them lost, just the same as a few people playing the winning team sometimes find ways to lose.
In one episode the team won the battle of teutoburg forest as romans so it is changing history, kinda.
phalanx vs phalanx battles are beatiful
Al Murray = BEST GENERAL EVAR!!!!!
@Afrikaanus i'm not denying that the romans fought in phalanx formation during a period of time. But many latin tribes didn't. The romans fought as phalanxes yes, but that doesn't mean the latin community did. Phalanx vs Phalanx were not most common in Italy. That would be greece. True the greeks relied on mercenaries but i would still say the greeks had the largest use of phalanxes.
@Afrikaanus ? correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't that be greece. In italy the romans stopped using phalanxes after the gaul sacked rome. They changed their battle formations after that to the hastati, principes, Triari etc. Italy was not known for phalanx battles because the latins fought in order but not in phalanxes. I'm convinced that you mean greece. Greece invented the phalanx, and macedonia perfected the formation.
@AKON33344. No, RTW's version is some what wrong. The generals that fought here were from Alexanders command. So they were formally in the Macedonian army thats why they have such similar armor.
It's a shame Kate Silverton can't add tactical competence to her long list of talents.
@jedq What...the hell...are you trying to say? Is this some sort of messed up code? xD
Pretty confident to argue with military historians without doing any research
@Afrikaanus correct. The romans were known for their flexible troops. The opposite of phalanx. Your previous statement was incorrect. The only time i could think of a italian battle that consisted of phalanxes might be the Phyrric wars. But event he i'm doubtful
Seems like an easy game to play. Every episode where the contestants attack a flank or hit on the rear side of an opponents line, the contestants win. Every time the contestants don't do this, they fail.
@ADDIMA1 You get the proper ones if you download Rome Total Realism or Europa Barbarorum
Ahh ok i get your point now ok
*updates wikipedia*
in Rome total wars its Seleucid vs Egyptian which is more accurate because after the split the kingdom of Seleucid was in control of the middle east but in all this battle's pretty fun ad easy in Rome total wars
I found that odd, since Greece is completely full of mountains.
The battle took place in modern day Egypt so open and semi arid regions are common
It's funny how when the elephants fall down, they squish and kill a dozen warriors.
They are no Ptolemy or Antiochus
@GeorgeUKCFC
or rometotalrealism platinium.
Battle of Tigranocerta, they played as Armenia and won, whereas the Romans won in real life. However I do admit they mostly play as the winners.
so u love total war on pc
Since the team always plays the side of the historical victor it's not really "changing" history is it?
Ptolemaic Egypt, look it up.
Wow Famous People. And I have not heard of either of them, Mainly because I"m American. D face
@AKON33344 You need to get a basic idea of ancient history mate. You think the Egyptian military of the Ptolemaic era looked like something out of the Mummy just because RTW made em that way? It's common knowledge that Rome Total War is anything BUT realistic.
I meant that when they play Hastings, they play as the Normans instead of the Saxons. When they play Stamford Bridge, they don't play as the Vikings. When they play Raphia here, they play as the Egyptians. Why not play the Seleucids in this battle? Why not play the historical "loser"?
kaite done all that in 03 nw in 09 she done well more nusback people say he women nw
Rather learn Alexander
He is now... a she, /dr-lynette-nusbacher/dangerous-theatre_b_1086689.html
