    I learned about this historic battle when I got curious about how and why Portugal was absorbed by Spain at one point and proceeded to do some research. It led me all the way to this battle, which decisively weakened the royal family and the country of Portugal, triggering succession crisis and civil wars, and ultimately allowing Spain the golden opportunity to exploit the situation and take over Portugal. On the other hand the battle strengthened the Moroccan Saadi regime which then began its, albeit brief, ascent to regional power status. Thanks a lot for bringing this pivotal battle to attention. This battle deserves to be much better known.

    • @LauftFafa
      @LauftFafa Před 11 dny +6

      morocco will stay a regional power till the 1700s , the strongest moroccan monarch was moulay ismail ( also have Guinness world record for most kids) in his Era morocco's army was around 300k strong 150k of them were regulars following the janissary model and in that period morocco would fight spain and the ottomans successfully . that sultan even did parade once over 40.000 european war captives many of them later joined his christian guard .
      in his reign morocco became an attraction point to the european Renegades who didnt want to serve the ottomans but still wanted to serve a strong monarch .
      i believe the city of el sawira in his time period had over 10.000 danish renegades or maybe it was a different coastal city. so yeah the golden age technically should last until the 1720s then they will get a 3rd one around 1770s to 1800 (reason morocco was confident enough to be first to recognize the Usa and be also first to technically declare war on usa before the barbary wars and impose a protection tax on their ships that the americans accepted to pay after losing some 2 or 3 ships . a deal that will stay in vigor )
      during the napoleonic era morocco will feel intimidated by the strength of france and this will force the country to become isolated and protective instead of seeking allies and keeping technological improvements and try to be up to date like the ottomans did .
      in general its a respectable history probably the longest and most glorious of all existing arab countries today.

      moroccans though have a doctrine of horse gunners and it date since the Marinid dynasty and its still celebrated today in the fantasia / Tbourida events that is a kind of sport where each group of each team have to run a certain distance then do a war cry and fire at synch when the order is given.

    How would x conqueror aproach this battle?
    Hannibal: Strech the line and hide troops in plain sight if necessary, elite cavalry ambush when all troops are commited, kills everyone.
    Alexander: Strech the line and overload one of the flanks, pikes hold center while companions racks in the kills, enemy leader manages to escape.
    Caesar: Strech the line, cavalry is used to tie down enemy cav, infantry charge, the 10th easily wins their engagement and carry the day. Enemy surrender.

    • @AliSyed711

      I can see Caesar sending a part of his force to block off the enemy supply route, digging in, engaging in some random skirmishes and then eventually accepting the enemy’s surrender here without a real battle. That becomes more likely considering the Portuguese had a large army within Moroccan territory with no long-term ability to sustain themselves.

    The tragic thing about King Sebastian is that he had been a good king before this dumb disastrous campaign. He reformed thr army to match the Spanish tercios, built hospitals for the poor, made some good reforms and genuinely cared about the well being of the average person . There was genuine hope that he would save Portugal's future, sadly he had also been raised by Jesuit priests who put bad ideas about crusading in his head and doomed him and his nation. Even though Portugal reclaimed its independence part of the country's soul died in Alcacer Quibir never to be recovered.

    • @florazul-1191
      @florazul-1191 Před 8 hodinami

      True, Sebastian's story is tragic because, despite the flaws he had, he also displayed virtues such as the love for his kingdom, his wish to be a great king and his determination that inspired and gave hope to the people. I believe he would had been a good monarch if not for this battle. As you stated, many of the laws and reforms during his reign had the well being of the people in mind. He was much beloved by the folk, who called him "the desired king" and his death was indeed "the blow" for Portugal's spirit, no doubt.
