Right Elbow In Golf Downswing Drill PERFECT POSITION! - Sport
Positives through the Corona virus for me is plenty of time to swing the clubs and coming home watching Clay clear up any questions I may have. Today was that little bone on the elbow. Thank you once again for your brilliant insight!! No one better!
Good stuff. My pleasure!
This is what I finally figured out in 2019. Made a huge difference in my driver distance AND dispersion. I really enjoy your swing lessons!
Glad to help
Thanks to Clay and Q for this wonderful explanation and demonstrations. this really helps.
Our pleasure!
Excellent video. Of the hundreds maybe thousands of golf tips/ instruction this is by far the most important lesson/concept.
Thanks a bunch! Take care!
Started to feel this again. Used to be about my only swing thought was trail elbow. Bout to go back to this
Perfect video for what I need. Thank you!
Maybe my experience will just be interesting here: I am a one-armed golfer (RH clubs, right arm) and this is like one of three ultimate keys for me for speed and consistency. If you swing with your right arm only, and you can keep that ellbow pointing down, its such a powerful position, I just did some speed tests with an 8 iron: if I dont do this, my clubhead speed is around 75 mph. If I do this, I really FEEL the power just at the start of the downswing I my clubhead speed with the humble 8 iron goes all the way up to 93-96 mph
another great video - clear - precise - thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent. This vid is so helpful for anyone who is having difficulty swallowing the driver.
Glad you think so!
Is it just me or is Clay Ballard the Chuck Norris of CZcams golf. Dude be like oh hit that pretty well could be better carry was 305 -_- keep up the great work man your videos have been instrumental in my golf game I really appreciate it!
Haha...thanks Matt! 😎
Clay that was a fantastic golf lesson! You’re a wonderful instructor! Thank thank you so much! 😍👏
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ever since I've been watching your videos, my ball striking has transformed incredibly, this move is key to that. Just recently joined the top speed golf system and absolutely love it. Super highly recommend it to everyone. Very exciting.
Hi Kenny, thanks for sharing. Keep up the great work!
After years of suffering over the top and not being able to correct it... This video has completely changed my golf swing! I have never hit an iron so crisp, the ball comes off the club face completely different! Even hitting a few draws instead of a weak fade. Thank you so much!
Thanks guys. Great video, I hit some of my best drives and iron play two days in a row after watching this video 😃
Nice work!
Great video! Extremely helpful
Glad to hear it!
Awesome advice as always!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant video Clay. I tried this and could hardly believe just how much power..with accuracy I achieved. I played a local quite tough course..and I took 21 shots off my previous best...that's 21 shots better...I was truly amazed, and the distance with accuracy was fantastic..I even birdied the Si 1 par 5 540 yds...Drove just over 300yds..then a 4i to the front fringe..chip to 3ft and putt for birdie, I was just so impressed...with myself..lol.
Awesome! Congrats! Keep up the good work!
Great video Clay. Elbow in the slot is key.
Thanks Dougie!
Funny bone feeling is the key. When people use the tip of the elbow as the feel instead of the funny bone, they over do it. Good tip!.
Thanks!
THANK YOU
Thank you Spencer!

I've been watching alot of videos from ball positions, grip position and opening up my body on your driver videos and just have to say thank you! My game has improved dramatically since watching your videos. I've stuck in a slump of bad play and after practicing your tips and just shot an 80 on Sunday which would of been a 79 but I got nervous and well the rest is history on the last hole. Thank you for the great videos keep it up
That's great! Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good shooting!
love this! took me two years and a lot of drills to get this to be second nature... driving like a champ... slice is gone and distance is through the roof. also get tons of roll out now. thanks a bunch!!! a tweak I need to make is to put my back foot slightly behind so I can get the elbow on the hip; otherwise my arm feels trapped. just a range of motion issue or something...
Chad Mace it’s so incredibly difficult. Good job!
Good stuff! Thanks for sharing!
What drills did you do chad?
You should try and make some of
Thanks
You're welcome!
I’ve noticed the elbow tuck plus the act of squat/sit can occur almost simultaneously, making it one combined move. You’ve mentioned the squat/sit allows for your hip to clear- and fixes the hip thrust stand up error. Thanks.
Hi Brian, you are exactly right. Hope you're playing great! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Best improvement tip, encourages consistency which encourages confidence!
Absolutely!
Clay: Thanks for the tips....I would like it if you did more of these with irons...Drive I have No problem with...irons some times hit the ball OK but out to in swing...lose distance guess it's slow hips now with some weak knees...over coming a injury...Thanks...
Hi, check out our channel for many more videos on irons. There are literally hundreds :-) Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
EXACTLY me. Clay Ballard and Rory McIlroy (I admit that I try to copy him) are the most common influence on my swing
Thanks!
For us that has a flying elbow, we don’t realize when we are swinging it is happening; so we do not try and correct it back on path. We hit a full fade. So the hurting in your wrist is because you are are trying to correct it because you know you are doing it.
Great Video dude! Is that adaptable for iron swings? best regards from germany
Thanks! yes
Excellent video and very explicit in helping me understand the downswing and taking note of the right elbow. They key point that you address is the rotation, but that’s a timing issue that could take a while to get it right, especially for us weekend warriors ... great video Clay .. I’m a new subscriber bud
Thanks Rick! Yeah, this isn't something you'll get down over the course of a bucket of balls. It will take some time and reps. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
WOW I took this lesson to my driving range today and I could not believe how straight I was hitting the ball and to top of that I was hitting the ball just as far with less effort.
Nice work! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Clay, I enjoyed your videos and your tips very much. Also, I noticed that your hat is very unique. Could you tell me where I can purchase one? Thanks. Keep the good tips coming!
Thanks! Search "Nike sun hat" on Amazon
Great Clay!
Those tips works for irons?
Yes they do
The elbow does now "fly" on the downswing. It flies on the take away. This is a classic example of a teacher that doesn't understand what happens with a particular flaw. The elbow flies on the take away and like a Jim Furyk players that do this feel it and attempt to re rout on the downswing. This leaves the club open and they slice.
hola la verdad excelente video me gusto deseo el nuevo grabación me retiro les mando cariños muchas gracias
Thanks!
Can you help me out please when I tuck the elbow should I fill a whip when I turn the hips with the arms
Nice job explaining this! Do you feel the right shoulder coming down as well or is it mostly the elbow with shoulder rotating to the left?
Hi, you want to feel like your shoulders are rotating more vertically to the ground almost like a Ferris wheel. You're going to feel like you're bending into your trail side. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
It is a more vertical rotation and if you compare it with the backswing rotation, it feels like it rotates under or scoops and swivels towards the right, at least mine does. I've also noticed as you rotate your shoulders on the downswing, if you return your right shoulder to roughly the same spot it was at address once your shoulders are parallel with the target line, you will have a good chance of hitting a straight ball. This puts you in the slot as well, although right elbow is important I don't think tucking it in is the only option. Peace.
When I tuck the elbow I’ve been getting some pain in the right shoulder. Do you have any tips to avoid hurting the right shoulder. Yes this is powerful, but I must be doing something wrong as it feels sore after 50 swings , but don’t have any issues normally.
ya all that stuff.
Same result with keeping arm against body during takeaway Clay?
Clay I really realize if you get in the position as you say here you get your power from the whip and if it’s correct you can whip as hard as you want but couldn’t figure out what the difference was
I find that for my right elbow to fold properly I have to really focus on sequencing my movement and club head path off the ball. It is very important that I slow my backswing down to allow my hips, shoulders, arms and club head to gather together as I move off the ball on the back swing. When everything gets slotted correctly what a difference it makes in the finish too. And ball carry.
Thanks for sharing!
Would you recommend the same swing drill for irons as well? 1. Elbow tucked early. 2. Funny bone attached...
Yessir!
Hey man, great video!! I've been trying to get this position with my right elbow under my left arm in the downswing. It's really hard for me to achieve this with my normal swing. At the top of the backswing as i start my downswing , i naturally want to kinda just turn with my shoulders. When I try to achieve this position by doing really light practice swings, I can do it. But as soon as I do a real swing I can't get it. I'm trying to figure out the right feel for me to achieve this. Any advice? But great video. Thank you
im dog shit at golf so definitely take this with a grain of salt but what helped me in this regard was being conscious of maintaining my side tilt. If I'm too upright I can't get my elbow tucked correctly
Morning Clay and Q. My question isn't about todays lesson. I tried bowing my left wrist to close the club face like you have shown in previous videos while hitting a 8 iron on the range and immediately started hitting smother hooks. In fact the ball barely got off the ground, Obviously that little move is going to take a lot of work for me to master it. But can you clarify exactly where in the downswing you should bow your left wrist to help the closing of the club face? My guess is I was overdoing it since the club face was pointing dead left and hooded at impact.
Hi Tim, you want to be doing it in transition. You're over-doing it and/or flipping through contact if you're hitting hooks. If you just bow the wrist and flip then it will just close the face most likely. Bowing the wrist is what squares the face when you get forward shaft lean. If you're getting forward shaft lean then you're just over-doing it or there is no need for you to do it because you may be able to square the face with your forearm rotation. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Clay I struggle with right elbow as now I feel like I almost keep it tucked too much. When I get to the top of my backswing instead of lifting up the right arm and elbow I continue to rotate my body back. I tried to get away from this, but I struggle to keep control of my swing and even power. What do you suggest?
Are you pulling with the left arm and hand or with both hands and arms? I tend to pull with me left arm and hand.
It's both but you're going to feel it more in the first three fingers (pinky, ring, middle) of your lead hand. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Hi Clay, have you ever had anyone experience shanks when they try this. Seems to be the result I get and I'm not sure why. Thanks
Yeah, this is pretty common. You're likely not rotating and/or early extending. First I would try to hit the ball off the toe then feel like you're rotating your lead hip back and away from the golf ball in the downswing. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Thanks. I find that when my elbow is close to my R hip with good rotation at impact compared to elbow close and releasing just before impact (evidenced by DL video) I get a slightly chunky strike vs crisp on latter. Should I keep persisting with new feels and eventually strikes will come?
Hi, you're probably releasing with the hands causing chunks. Feel like the club is releasing well in front of impact instead of at impact. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
@@TopSpeedGolf thanks. when I'm releasing early with the hands the strikes are better ?!
Do you use this same swing thought for Wedges ?
Yes
summary : get right elbow in tight, with elbow pit facing up and palm up, then rotate through the shot.
Is this only for driver or do you apply it to irons also
irons too
@@TopSpeedGolf awesome. Thanks
Clay I love your videos but why is it that you never teach golf and feels at half swings? If the 30 handicappers can't follow the feels at half, slow swings, how are they supposed to follow whilst swinging at 120MPH?
Hi, there are definitely some drills that we have that start at a half swing and work up but I typically find it's better to do slow full swings and build up the speed from there. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Don't you also need to Supinate your arm too? If you dont get the back of the left hand pointing to the target you'll still hit a block. It needs to be bowed and supinated, correct?
You need to shallow the club too...yes
I was trying this but I hooked it the worst I ever have in my life...what do you think I did wrong?
It's hard to say without seeing your swing but you probably didn't rotate and swung too much in to out with a closed face. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
My problem is I do this yet my clubhead speed is about 121 mph. I cant figure out how to make this feel natural.
121 mph is outstanding! Keep doing it and it will become natural over time. Play well! Nate | TSG

sum this up
so everything my coach tells me to do has been a lie. gonna try out some new stuff now to get rid of these stuck feelings
It's always good practice to follow one instructor/set of instructions at a time. Best of luck!
Some instructors aren’t good. Like anything else.
Maybe Donald Trump is your coach
Instead of shallowing the plane on the downswing, why not just take it back on the desired plan to start with? I cannot time the change in swing plane otherwise.
Why the right elbow will fly out in downswing? It is not natural anatomically.
For some it isn't
Lol. Q is helping you while Q anon is helping/waking the world. WWG1WGA.
😂
Do you have any drills for early right elbow folding in takeaway? I haven't figured this out for years
