Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

Oh, Lady Mariko. 🥺
will this be on dvd,,,,,,,
You destroyed Clavell's novel.
@@AmbiguousMan724 Bullshit. The new series is a wonderful version of the story and far better than the old series from 1980. FX Shogun is a true masterrpiece.
@@TwoForTwentyFilms Have you read the book or watched the 1980 series?
I watched the series in 1980 and it was very good during that time. Everybody loved it. But I rewatched the old series before FX Shogun and in comparision I personally prefer the new version. There is a reason why people compare FX Shogun with GoT, one of the most successful series in TV history.
The Anna Sawai sweep is gonna be so beautiful once it's awards season
Hear hear!
Shōgun raise the bar with this episode in my opinion . Anna Sawai was amazing in this part , I hope she gets her Emmy nomination for that performances ⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️ .
Just engrave her name on the award now, why waste any time - amazing performance 😍
why is that ?she wasnt black or gay?

But seriously...Anna deserves this. But won't be surprised if a Black/Alphabet crowd/climate activist/virtue signaler etc etc wins this.
This show is phenomenal.

Elegant
Refined
Haunting
nonsense of getting killed
I like the constant subversion of our expectations. Mariko here wages "war" by sacrificing herself and her men, tempting her enemies into dishonoring themselves. All along, the REAL war was for the heir's support.
Brutal
Unforgiving
Majestic
Anna Sawai deserves to get couple of award for her role as Mariko.
At least the show depicts the use of the Yari and Naginata.. really the main weapons of a samurai during the sengoku period.. the katana was the secondary weapon if the samurai was deprived of his main weapon.
It was also the weapon of choice use by samurai women aka onna musha and onna buegisha.
The samurai mostly fought as mounted archers (yabusame) with the infantry being spearmen (ashigaru wielding yari). It is true that the katana was a secondary weapon for the samurai during the Sengoku Period. In addition, the wakizushi was an auxiliary sword. However, the yabusame were central and still played a huge role at the Battle of Sekigahara. High ranking samurai were primarily yabusame. Archers (kyushu) themselves as well as yabusume gave way to ashigaru using matchlocks (tanegashima). At the Battle of Nagashino in 1575 the tanegashima demonstrated its superiority to the bow and arrow (yumiya). At the Battle of Sekigahara tanegashima and the cannons from William Adams' ship The Fidele, were a huge advantage for Tokugawa Ieyasu. This was a further blow to kyushu and yabusume.
I think that goes for any type of warrior in history. Spears were like rifles, and swords were sidearms, like pistols.
@@Rabbithole8 Thank you for that.
@@Rabbithole8 the mounted archer Samurai is an old archetype. During the 1500s when samurai warfare was at its peak, most samurai fought mounted with spears. And they also fought on foot with spears/polearms
Oh, Mariko-sama, we are all in awe.

I watched the original series on TV in 1980. A few years later I found a paperback of the book and read it many times over. I do not have a streaming account now, and I watch video clips of the new series on You Tube. Surprisingly, I can still remember every word, in every scene, and it brings back memories of the enjoyable hours I spent reading the book. The characters were brought back to life in my imagination. Ahh...sweet!
Naginata-jutsu was and is primarily a ladies' sport. I suppose being a polearm compensates for lower upper-body strength and reach. This scene also demonstrates that, for all fighters, ancient and modern, pay attention to your cardio.
Honestly one of the best written female characters of modern television. Strong-willed, skilled, but not a superhuman. Despite the fact she's clearly very skilled at fighting Mariko, like any normal human, cannot simply defeat 10+ opponents by herself. Bonus points that this show shows her enemies working together to fight her, not just engaging one by one like most modern films and television.
Part of this scene was in the trailer and I must confess, I was very much expecting to see her enter invincible female protagonist mode ("Girls can be samurai too!") and cut down dozens of opponents in this scene. Ultimately, it wouldn't even have changed the story, but I'm glad they didn't go that route. Given her social status, a woman like her would've received weapons training and so she's shown as a capable combatant, but against multiple opponents that very quickly doesn't matter all that much - and you see when she's starting to fight desperately (overcommitting her swings).
Same with Blackthorne: In the scene with Yabushige, I was afraid he'd be getting the Tom-Cruise-Last-Samurai treatment and somehow become the best swordsmen in Japan within the space of a short montage. But they also didn't do that (luckily, because it's very unrealistic). Only small critique I have is that as a sailor engaging in piracy, the Navigator likely would've at least somewhat capable with a rapier or a cutlass and they could've shown that (and by doing that, acknowledged that European swordsmanship and martial arts of the time were also highly developed). Him relying on his pistols was fine though.
Really well done scenes, overall.
This whole episode is just devastating.
Why?
I want the actor behind lord hiromatsu to be given all award there is.
Akechi mariko ❤️ Anna sawai ❤️
isn't it maria as in akechi gracia?
Before she was married.
The whole cast was awesome, Anna Sawai is gorgeous.
Im so glad they dident go the Mary Sue road and let her take down like 12 guards.
She could, is not unrealistic samurai women were trained from a small age in martial arts, to fight multiple opponents. If she she attacked at the same time as the other samurai she would of had a chance. one example is the Onna buegisha Nakano tekeko in 1863 in the battle of Aizu armed with a naginata (a Japanese bladed pole arm)took down 6 to 10 armed men with modern guns her and a group of young samurai women known as the Joshitai which translate into women army was a group of 20 samurai Aizu women which included her sister and her mother she perished in the battle at the age of 22. but this goes to show in the hands of trained samurai women the naginata was as deadly as the katana in fact in combat the naginata is more deadly than the katana. These men are armed with an Yari a type of Japanese spear so she can easily incage in hand to hand combat while Nakano tekeko had to fight men armed with rifles Nakano tekeko got lucky because the enemy underestimated the Aizu women and gave the order to capture them a life this allowed the Joshitai to attack and incage in hand to hand combat with the enemy before they resumed firing fighting she still took down 6 to 10 men before being shot in the chest. The case with mariko the men were order to not hurt her this puts them at a disadvantage. If she let them attack and took them one by one she could of won. Put this is to show the women of the samurai class were not afraid to throw down in fuedial Japan for example when their husband's were at war it was the wives who defended the home and of time of war women would also participate in battle in fact recent discovery discovered that 30% of battle Graves in Japan contain women is unspoken part of Japanese history over looked many people think women in ancient Japan was weak and docile while Japan at time was a patriarchal society it still gave women more rights then other places at the time like Europe. In fuedial Japan women could inherent, they could rule they have even been female emperor and USA never had a female president, women could fight in battle. Women could have money in fact it was women who took care of finance. Not to say it wasn't hard for them just saying they had a little more freedom for women at the time. They purposely made so Mariko couldn't win it wasn't because she couldn't win is just it wasn't part of the storyline her death was nessary for the storyline she died for her lord it wasn't just the men that were loyal to their lords it was also women were fericely loyal to their lords. They were prepared to they lords just like the men. Look up Akashi Mistude Daughter which is who Mariko is based on.
@@mariarahim651 Very nice and informative post. Thank you for educating us! I agree that she could have killed several more of them but she also knew the real impact of her actions was the symbolism of proving Ishido was keeping everyone there against their will. Deep down she knew her eventual death would be the thing that turned public opinion against Ishido and help Toronaga defeat him and save Japan from his tyranny. Because she wished to end the torment of her tragic life in as useful and meaningful a way as possible, she accepted death. She knew it was her destiny in some way. The tragedy is that Anjin's ultimate gesture of love and sacrifice was the thing that let her understand the profound bond they shared and she finally found a spark of beauty in her life, something to live for. For her to then still sacrifice her life for the greater good took on an even greater meaning. What a devastating ending.
Her weapon was literally designed to be lightweight and have a fightign style capable of fighting multiple opponents
@@vetabeta9890 And the point is?. I dont care how long the weapon og well designed it is, No way a Man or Woman can take down 12 trained Guards. Just not gonna happen. Pretty easy to overcome 12 vs 1 :). Its not an Automatic weapon she has in her hands :)
@@mariarahim651 Choosing Onna Buegisha to illustrate a point about the skill of onna-musha is not a good choice. Onna Buegisha was not an onna-musha of old. The Late Edo period and the Sengoku Period were very different, and you can't conflate the two. Women's status changed due to Edo Confucianism and they became solely dependent upon men and it became extremely rare for women to train in weapons. The number is 5 to 6 and they were not ashigaru with yari but troops armed with firearms, as you pointed out, and that is in important fact that does the opposite of what you think it does. Onna Buegisha took advantage of the shock of the troops at seeing "onna-musha" at a time where that was a strange site. She was shot in the chest as soon as the soldiers came to their senses. Rather than Onna Buegisha, Hangaku Gozen of the Genpei War (1180-1185) is a better example of a skilled onna-musha.
If in Shogun they depicted a male with a naginata defeating that many ashigaru with yari, it would still be unrealistic despite the man having superior skills. In a real battle, the enemy attacking you one by one is silly. If they wanted to kill her they simply would have surround her. The fact that they were refraining from attacking her meant her survival not the other way around. In a one to one battle would a highly skilled onna-musha beat a lesser male opponent? Yes, most likely, but surround by trained and yet lesser skilled opponents with yari, male or female intent on killing, the answer is no. In addition to all of this you are elevating onna-musha as if they had training that was superior to male counterparts. There is absolutely no need to do this. The scene with Mariko is wonderful because it is both realistic and for what it meant to the people in universe as well as the symbolism for us the viewers.
I can only dream, but I hope they make a prequel of Akeci Jinsai story. 😍
I just wish they had at least 2 seasons, to do the book better service. Do not get me wrong, the show is phenomenal and the reason I even read the book, but the worthy detail that has been left out is sad to me. Still, in the limited series time they had available, they have knocked it out of the park.
What a powerful scene! Good job!

There's so much going on politically here that a lot of shows would've had a load of exposition just to explain.
Kiyama is honourable and in the same religious group, he sees dishonour by Ishido in front of him and sees someone of his own group driven to suicide, who then asks him personally to kill, so he knows Ishido made him choose between mortal sins.
Ohno is a more ruthless powermonger, so being reminded and being made to say in public that he is powerless make him feel massively belittled in his current situation. He knows he is subjugated to Ishido.
Lady Ochiba sees her friend / frenemy driven to death, realising her scheming brought it about and she too is subjugated to Ishido, crucially she understands the position the two regents are put in, she knows a revolt is inevitable and she must switch sides to stay on the winning team.
So by this act, Mariko basically shatters the anti-Toranaga coalition by working on the motivations behind each camp.
Homestly one of my fave characters of all time.

Bowing before killing them was diabolical
huh? was just manners. all just doing er jerb
??? Starting a fight or war without introducing yourself or bowing is diabolical.
She politely asked her main guard _"Please, kill him"_ The man steps up, bows to his victims, and then proceeds to kill both of them with three strokes. Violence as it ought to be depicted. Nasty, brutish, and short.
Flying reapers drones and killing from thousands of miles away remotely is diabolical.
I hope nothing bad happen to her 😔
At least she went out with a bang.
R.I.P.
Somebody read the book pleaseeee...
It's like a chess and Mariko is the queen
Hahahahaha!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣.... Now the elf fights samurai!!! Hahaha!!!
It's a beautiful scene, but there's something I don't understand: Kiyama and Ohno tell Mariko they can't command the samurai at the gate since they're Ishido's men, but after Kiyama shouts to the samurai not to harm Mariko, they obey his command and don't attempt to stab her with their spears but simply deflect her attacks.
They are not ordering them, just reminding them Mariko is highborn who is not to be killed like this
Most likely they got the same instruction from Ishido. The show makes it pretty clear later on when she is actually killed by the shinobi working on Ishido's behalf that her death was not the desired outcome.
Those men are confused how to deal with this highborn lady. If they make it the wrong action to deal with this situation, they and their family will get executed. So Kiyama reminds them how to deal with it.

The scene where she realizes she can no longer fight and declares her intention to die by her own hand evokes a sense of "transience" among Japanese viewers, but would people from other cultures understand this significance?
The 1980 miniseries omitted this fight completely. Of course, not everything is right. Like the unemotional way Jarvis just watches the deadly skirmish. just disappointing, his hands held over the wall like he's watching a sports event. The only thing missing was the popcorn...
⚠️Spoilers ahead, people⚠️
Wrong weapon for Mariko. It's not Lord Kiyama who's chosen to be her second. And sccording to the book's plotline neither he nor Lord Onoshi (the leper) should even be there at this particular place and time.
The series is really enjoyable, thou. Great imagery. And Sanada is really good, but without Toshiro Mifune's gravitas as Toronaga.
Great imagery, worthy of Clavell's novel. Pity TPTB altered so many things...

It's one of my favorite scenes from the show. I could feel Marikos frustration during the scene as she fights and gives it her all. I feel she let's out her frustration not just from having to fight these men, but the frustration that has surrounded her life. From being 'forced' to marry a man and serve him. I could feel her pain, she carries the pain and frustration of having to mold ourselves to men that have their thumb over us. Clearly, there's no way she was going to win against all these men, but that did not stop her. I love her so much, and yes I cried when she fell to her knees.
Not a patch on the original
The only thing I didn't like about right before this scene is the samurai in full armor were finished too easily and quickly, especially considering they were facing unarmored opponents.
Agreed. Not to mention, no large scale battles, no fights!
They were taken out by the archers I’m pretty sure
We don’t see it happen to all of them but the only two we actually see go down were taken out by arrows
Was mariko a fighter in the book?
I don't know about the book, but in history yes. Woman know the basic stuff to defend the village while their husband was in war. Listen to podcast it's very good.
Yes she's a samurai and learned how to fight and was able to hold her own for a bit! This scene in the book was slightly different in that Mariko only went up against one guard instead of all of them ganging up on her. But if I recall correctly, Yabushige even commented on how if the guard was a lesser man Mariko would've beaten him

I am interested in only one question: is the Emperor interested in what is happening in his country? Or it doesn't "concern" him
My understanding was that the Emperor had no power. Probably like the British Queen or King today.
The emperor couldn't do anything even if he did. The emperor at the time was purely a ceremonial and religious head, the power of his throne steadily eroded by the emerging samurai class in the preceding centuries. It's only until the 19th Century that the emperor would regain power, with the help of daimyo alienated by the Tokugawa (or Toranaga, in this fictional setting) Shogunate.
He is basically a puppet and his mother Ochiba is controlling everything on his behalf.

How does one come to the idiotic conclusion that you could somehow better serve your Lord by being dead? Seppuku is more about cowardice than honour anyway. Bravery rectifies, cowardice runs away. Suicide is the ultimate running away.
Cause her death would turn the Allie’s of the enemy her lord was facing against them and the plan worked
“Idiotic conclusion” one see’s his own reflection. You won’t understand.
All I saw were bunch of men had to kill eachother because a woman wanted to leave. 😢
Kinda close but more accurate would be a bunch of men died cause a man ordered a woman to leave the castle who was the woman’s master and another man kept her against her will buy ordering other men to stop her
Não gostei que ela morreu !
Mariko did not fight men with a naginata seriously.
After all, she was wearing five layers of kimono, high-soled sandals, and her legs were not open.
Probably because Toranaga's plan required her death.
If she gets serious, she'll probably wear straw sandals,
It should be a costume that allows for more movement.😁
I mean women were trained to in kimono. Put they made it so she couldn't win as part of the storyline. I agree.
なんで、日本の歴史ドラマにドローンが必要なんだろう。アメリカ人らしい笑笑
In Modern Naginata, we wear Hakama ( Pants like the men wear) Keikogi (Gi, like shirt made of heavy woven cotton) , A helmet called a Men, chest plate armor called a Do, Gloves called Kote, and shin guards called Sune-ate. All of this weighs nothing like the layers of Kimono women had to wear in this period and what I can visibly see on the Actor who plays Mariko. It would be a monumental effort for her to fight men in the garb that she is wearing in this scene and would likely wear out quickly, just as she had here.
Very, very silly.
How so?
Nada interesante
Again, I have to say about this show, the scene is so good, so very well acted, staged and shot, but they missed a massive opportunity not doing it exactly like in the book. This scene was so gripping in the book, I read afterwards well after my bedtime and felt it at work the next day. You readers out there, give this one a turn.
