How Singapore Built a Stable Society

  • čas přidán 9. 09. 2020
  • Singapore suffered from race riots sparked by deep political and economic differences in 1964, tensions that contributed to the decision to separate from Malaysia in 1965. To avoid the mistakes of the past, the Singaporean government entrenched multiracialism in its major national policies, from education, housing, politics to community development. These policies have helped build a fairly harmonious society and laid foundations for Singapore to become a global economic powerhouse.

Yes, agree. There will always be critics and narratives on either side: segregation or assimilation, racial unity or cultural genocide, freedom of the press or preventing disinformation, authoritarianism and social stability or liberal democracy and potential social instability. I think the only thing that leaders of a country can do is listen to the criticism but evaluate its merits, and its outcomes will justify if the leaders have made the correct decisions or not. Singapore is one of the few to have the resolute determination to chart its own path and not simply accepting governance advice from others. Lee Kuan Yew did the right thing. I’m a Malaysian and sadly racism is a still a thing today because of uneducated politicians. Most Malaysians (Malay, Chinese, Indian, Indigenous) have already live harmoniously but there are still a group of Malay that are still very racist because they were influenced politically. If you have access to Malaysian secondary school history textbook, they interpret Lee Kuan Yew as a threat to the sovereignty of Malaysia and the Malay race so Abdul Rahman (1st Malaysian prime minister) expelled Singapore from Malaysia federation in order to protect the sovereignty of Malay and Malaysia. But you can see for yourself the difference between a diversify Singapore and Malay dominated Malaysia. FYI Malaysia is still imposing the Malay only prime minister rule.

You can’t compare China and India with Singapore and Malaysia. If you’re in Malaysia you will know how racist the politicians are. The Asian racism in America are driven by the covid pandemic and the racist Donald Trump administration. You also need to understand that Malaysia is a federation which is join by Sarawak and Sabah so if you say that Malaysia is Malay dominant you are totally wrong. It's a bit tough - I think that Singapore has a few unique characteristics that make this exceedingly difficult to pull off anywhere else, starting with the fact that Singapore post-independence began constructing public housing extensively. At that time most Singaporeans were varying levels of poor, and a huge amount of people were resettled, sometimes coercively. I can't see that taking place in many countries nowadays.

Tbh in the medium to long term it is an unstable, expensive and dangerous social strategy to tolerate/promote multiculturalism (as well as to maintain it). Although singapore did not have a choice in the matter, I think every country should try to reduce the amount of non-internal outside cultures and ethnic groups from integrating into the country as it produces many advantages such as:
      1. It will reinforce and solidify the social harmony fairly indefinitely.
      2. Will compel citizens and governments to allocate as much money, effort, time and resources into maintaining and developing the economy (instead of wasting money on social issues they can allocate money to more efficient and economically sustainable projects or ventures).
      3. They can become more cohesively united and so can execute economic and social reforms more effectively (less social challenges and a healthy environment for proper development is usually hindered by multiculturalism.
      4. Reforms can be strictly implemented to improve the quality of education and life of one internal population without neglecting another population (which will get the economy rolling, solidify it's foundations and totally prevent any racial discriminarion from arising; as there will be a lack of racial diversity).

They forgot to mention, and equally important too, how national service which forces young men of all races to serve in compulsory military service for 3 years (then) played a huge role on getting Singaporeans to build up their understanding of each other. Even more so and important was that during the riots of 1969, this multi-racial was deployed for the first time to enforce the curfew which was of great significance - the generations of young and multi racial Singaporeans have to defend what this new nation was to be, one that is multi cultural and multi racial. Yet, inequality does exist, Singapore is an expensive place to live due to the high cost of living and there’s an unhealthy reliance on a working long arduous hours.

I'm South African, and I'd like to point out that you are engrossly biased.
_"Racial tensions between minorities and Blacks today are far higher than than they ever were during Apartheid."_
That is one hell of a distorted perspective you got there ou. And is a clear indication of the lifestyle and environment that you _"minorities"_ typically live in, and those are _"ethnic bubbles"_ .
You live in your suburbs and on your farms, hidden-away from South African, with limited interaction with _"Blacks"_ , that you have developed this distorted view of what is happening in South Africa.
Which explains the _"we don't want to ruled by Blacks"_ sentence you've just spewed.
It would be insightful for you to know that NO ONE in South Africa -unless wealthy, or well-connected, has any say in executive government.
ANC supporters are the bottom rung of power, then you have ANC officials, then ANC elite, and alongside them, are the "MINORITY" multi-millionaires and billionaires that have them on a regular payroll.
You should understand that, regardless of whether you agree or not, BLACKS still do have it harder than "minorities" and those are facts.
But "Blacks" do not have a functioning system for them to get out of this struggle.
You _"minorities"_ have A LOT of well-to-do individuals in your communities. You AT LEAST have more leverage for economic independence that can loosen the clutches of bad governance experienced by all of us, so my advice -use it.
And this is assuming -by the way, that you're an Afrikaner and middle class.
But I will give you credit in providing a more apt comparison than I did. It was insightful.

MALAY SUBTITLES Part 1 of 3
    00:01
    00:27
    menyumbang kepada pemisahan Singapura
    00:29
    dari Malaysia pada tahun berikutnya.
    00:31
Untuk mengelakkan kesilapan masa lalu, penubuhan Singapura
    00:34
Perdana Menteri Lee Kuan Yew dan pasukannya bertujuan untuk
    00:37
mewujudkan masyarakat di mana berlainan bangsa, agama
    00:40
dan budaya dapat hidup dengan aman.
    00:43
Inilah cara Singapura membina masyarakat yang cukup harmoni.
    00:54
Singapura mempunyai penduduk 5.7 juta orang.
    00:58
Di antara 3.5 juta yang menjadi warganegara,
    01:01
    76% peratus adalah orang Cina
    01:04
    dan 15% adalah berbangsa Melayu.
    01:06
Orang Melayu adalah orang asli pulau ini.
    01:09
    Semasa penjajahan Inggeris,
    01:11
    pendatang dari China, India
    01:13
dan bahagian lain dunia datang ke Singapura
    01:15
ketika pulau itu dikembangkan menjadi pelabuhan perdagangan.
    01:19
Menjelang tahun 1870-an, orang Cina telah menjadi
    01:22
    penduduk majoriti di Singapura.
    01:24
    Pada tahun 1959, Singapura memperoleh
    01:27
    pemerintahan sendiri daripada British.
    01:29
Untuk melepaskan diri sepenuhnya dari pemerintahan kolonial,
    01:31
    02:26
kerana pemimpin Melayu dan ahli politik Melayu merasa
    02:30
    mereka adalah anak lelaki tanah.
    02:32
Ada perasaan bahawa orang Melayu harus selalu
    02:35
    mempunyai kedudukan dominan politik.
    02:39
    02:44
dan orang Cina menyebabkan berlakunya rusuhan.
    02:47
Orang Melayu Singapura kebanyakannya beragama Islam.
    02:51
Pada 21 Julai, percutian orang Islam untuk diraikan
    02:54
    ulang tahun Nabi Muhammad,
    02:56
    pertembungan berlaku antara peserta Melayu
    02:59
    dan pengamat Cina semasa perarakan.
    03:02
    Keganasan merebak ke seluruh pulau,
    03:04
    merosakkan Singapura selama berminggu-minggu,
    03:06
meninggalkan 23 orang mati dan 454 cedera.
    03:11
Pada bulan September, satu lagi siri rusuhan tercetus
    03:14
dengan pembunuhan penunggang becak Melayu tercetus.
    03:17
    03:21
dari Solat Jumaat ketika jam malam
    03:23
    dikenakan pada 2 September.
    03:26
Bas penuh, jadi mereka menaiki lori untuk perjalanan.
    03:29
Tetapi lori itu terbabas di kawasan Cina.
    03:33
    Banyak pemuda Cina berdiri
    03:34
    di tepi jalan.
    03:36
Dan tiba-tiba ketika mereka melihat kumpulan ini
    03:39
    lebih kurang 20 orang Melayu
    03:40
    naik dari lori untuk turun
    03:42
    untuk mendapatkan pengangkutan alternatif,
    03:45
    mereka pasti berfikir bahawa
    03:46
kami berada di sana untuk menyerang mereka.
    03:49
    Dan detik seterusnya,
    03:51
    mereka keluar dengan rantai basikal,
    03:55
    batang besi, bom asid
    03:57
    dan kekacauan hilang.
    03:59
    Mereka hanya memalu secara rawak,
    04:03
    membunuh orang di jalan.
    04:04
    Tapi untungnya bagi saya,
    04:06
    Saya dapat mengambil teksi bergerak
    04:09
    dan melarikan diri ke keselamatan.
    04:11
    Tetapi itu bukan akhir cerita.
    04:13
    04:21
    Ia adalah sebaliknya.
    04:23
    Orang Melayu dipukul
    04:25
    orang Cina yang tidak bersalah,
    04:27
    penarik beca, penjual buah
    04:30
    yang dulu pernah berkawan.
    04:32
    Rusuhan September mengakibatkan 13 kematian
    04:36
    dan menyebabkan 106 lagi cedera.
    04:39
    Kira-kira setahun kemudian,
    04:40
    Singapura terpisah dari Malaysia
    04:42
    dan menjadi negara merdeka.
    04:45

Need to get rid of Democracy first and establish an one party state getting rid of all the current parties and politicians

@@mycodingchannel9690 why? So that the perpetrators of Sri Lankan 2008 and 2009 genocide and extrajudicial killings torture and forced disappearances can completely crush the minoroties and rule over them ? It's not like democracy is working right now anyway. It's already an idenity cult politics based religious extremist sentiment rule by one party and a family without any real opposition.
Sri Lanka needs secular politics. Religion needs to be shoved away from politics.
And Sri Lanka need to embrace autonomous politics. And give freedom to the minority states so they can govern themselves.
Sri Lanka needs to get rid of the idea that the majority should be the rulers. Singapore follows the same.
Even if the Chinese are the majority everyone has a voice and freedom to be proud of their heritage.
