    I look forward to the VB & governor videos you mentioned , The 4R70W "gear swapping" into the AOD is the easy part. Making it shift properly is sometimes the challenge.

      Thanks, Edward...You're right - the mechanical recalibration is the tricky part for those wide-ratio gear swaps.

    What other vehicles to look for at junkyard besides the mustang for the 4r70w? You said to look for 98+, I would like to swap the internals to my aod. Thanks

      Hi Greg, thank you for watching.
      Any F150, E150 Van, Expedition, Mustangs, Explorers w/5.0L engines...Look for 98+ since that's the first year of the Mechanical Diode...Also look for the color of the case connector on the side of the unit - later model units with the diodes will have a black connector.

    Great video I wish I would off put a 4r 70 in my 63 falcon. That said can you tell me if a trans go hi rev kit will help with the quick up shifting my trans does? I’m mean it’s shifting to 2nd gear before I cross the street from a stop just normal driving and in OD before 40mph it really Boggs my motor down. I do have 3.73 rear gears with a 25” tire. Thanks for vidieo.

      Hi Matt, thanks for the kind words...Assuming you have an AOD with a stock gear train (ie not a 4R70 gear train swapped in) the Transgo AOD HP reprogramming kit should help you with recalibrating the shift points so you're not stack shifting from 1st to 2nd and bogging in OD as described...The 3.73s are likely part of the reason it's shifting so quickly...

      Thank you for the quick response and yes all stock gears so I will move foreword with the trans-go hi rev kit.

    great video with lots of information. I would like you to clear up that if one wanted to just install a 4R70w reverse input drum and 2 inch od band without any other mods will this work

    • @nickstransmissions
      @nickstransmissions  Před měsícem +1

      Hi Catpaw, thanks for watching. I believe I annotated the video with the necessary parts you need if you wanted to just install a wide band but NOT change your gear ratios. But in case there's any confusion, here's what you need:
      - 4R70W Rev Input Drum (98+ w/diode only - waste of time to get non-diode version)
      - AODE sun shell *keeps factory AOD gear ratios
      - Two-inch Wide OD band of your choice

      Hi TheDriver. I address that question specifically in the video...

    • @TheDriver1975
      @TheDriver1975 Před 28 dny

      @nickstransmissions I watched the video multiple times and you do say that in order to do the whole gear swap, you need to swap everything(bearings included). I'm specifically asking about just swapping the reverse drum, sun shell(from aode).

    • @nickstransmissions
      @nickstransmissions  Před 28 dny

      You didnt mention that specifically in your above comment so I assumed you were talking about the entire gear train swap. Yes, use the AOD bearings (they should be .130)

    Where do I sign up to get my AOD, 4r70w swapped? I have a mildly built 302 with aluminum heads and a radical camshaft in my 85 F150. The problem I have right now is that I need a stall converter because the stock converter is pulling the motor down and it’s struggling to rev. And the 2-3 shift happens so close together that it’s practically one gear instead of 2 separate gears. I’m really struggling with making a decision about this transmission. I’m almost ready to do a 5 speed swap and scrap this AOD.

    • @nickstransmissions
      @nickstransmissions  Před 2 měsíci

      Hi D.collier, thank you for watching...Any transmission shop familiar with these units should be able to assist you. That said, the AODs can be finicky so wouldn't blame you if you decided to do the 5-speed manual swap.

    Hi, great video you made and I appriciate the effort doing it.
    Question, why would you swat internals from 4r70w to AOD, why not just use the 4r70w? In context I have a 67 mustang with AOD and I plan to change it out for a 4r70w that I rebuild and also add performance uppgrade to +600hp strengt. For this Im looking at adding Holley EFI and to it a Holly programing module for 4r70w. So am I on the wrong track swapping out AOD for a 4r70w?

    • @nickstransmissions
      @nickstransmissions  Před 3 dny

      Thanks, Loffy...4R70 Gear swaps into AODs are done primarily because folks don't want to spend the $$$ on aftermarket transmission controllers and many are retro-ing the AODs into vehicles that originally took 3-speed C4s or C6s to obtain overdrive. So they want pure mechanical command and control, no computers.
      If you plan on running a 4R70W you'll need a transmission controller...I'd also recommend a billet stub shaft and performance sun shell among other things, given the power output of your engine.

      @@nickstransmissions Thank you for your quick reply, is there a one stop shop to buy these parts? Would you mind listing what I need to buy and change.. maybe there is a kit? For me its just fun to do it as good as it can be as I will rebuild it anyway so better to do it then. ( I mean all the internals to swap for better strengt)
      Do you have any plans to do a performance upgrade assembly video, sure like to see it.

    • @nickstransmissions
      @nickstransmissions  Před 3 dny

      You're welcome...Everything needed is listed in the video however you'll have to recalibrate the 2-3 back out valve in the valve body, otherwise you'll stack-shift from 2nd to 3rd gear due to the diff gear ratios.
      The best thing to do is grab a 1998+ 4R70W or 4R75 core from the junk yard, try to find one in a wrecked vehicle since the trans was working at the time of the accident. Those will have everything you need, parts-wise plus you may be able to sell some of other parts you don't use to offset costs.
      You can tell a 98+ via the black electrical connector (93-97 connectors are white)...The reason you want a 98+ is the mechanical diode one-way clutch installed onto the reverse input drum. Those were stronger than the traditional roller-style OWC in the earlier units.
      I'm hoping to get another AOD in the door where someone wants to do that...The customer was contemplating doing that with the AOD shown in the rebuild series on the channel now but decided against due to cost considerations.
      Please subscribe if you haven't already so you'll know when more AOD videos appear on the channel.
      TIA!

    Have you ever used HP Tuners, or SCT tuning tools after your rebuilds? I have HP Tuners and have some knowledge about using it. I have 2 Crown Vics, one is a civilian model, and the other is a Police Interceptor. I would like to copy and paste the police trans program over to the civilian model, but am not sure how to do this. I have seen videos about tuning a 6L80 by HP Tuners, just wondering if you have ever tried doing any tuning of your rebuilds?

    • @nickstransmissions
      @nickstransmissions  Před 3 měsíci

      I haven't messed with HP tuners or other like-kind programs or software as of yet...99.9% of my builds are carry-out so I hardly ever see the vehicles my transmissions get installed into.

    • @monkeywrenchization
      @monkeywrenchization Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@nickstransmissions I stopped doing carry outs. One, the installer fail to flush out cooler, it was plugged shut, and they wanted me to warranty it. Another one, the guy switched from either a 2004R or 700R4, and used the same drive shaft, it pushed the gear train against the drums and wore into the pump, they wanted warranty for that one too. If I don't do the complete job, I don't do it, that way I can control what is going on, and make extra money correcting somebody else's mistake. I really don't miss working on cars.
      HP Tuners can help with lockup apply, and shift scheduling among other things. It like putting in a shift kit without gettin dirty

    • @nickstransmissions
      @nickstransmissions  Před 3 měsíci

      Yea, none of those fuck-ups would have been on you, no way...My warranty disclosures are very robust in that it would be extremely tough for someone to successfully claim they deserve warranty coverage when failures to install correctly result in transmission damage or when either other sub-systems on the vehicle fail, damaging the transmission (lack of vehicle maintenance - voids warranty) or if the vehicle was used in an application that was not previously discussed at the time of the build (customer states car is a daily driver with no racing then proceeds to take it to the track every Friday and Saturday after rebuild).
