Look at the positive, Maddie. What a great friend Alexandria has been in your most recent van ordeal! Like you, she has a warm and sunny personality, is kind and generous, and has been incredibly helpful. When the dust settles and your van runs perfectly (wishful thinking of course), what will stay forever is the beautiful friendship you have built in a difficult time.

Hi from Bend, Oregon! I am so sorry this happened again! So happy you had a good friend by your side during this. I would recommend checking out a different mechanic in Bend if a problem ever arises again- 9th Street Auto and Darryl Henry's are two mechanics in town I'd recommend!

I hope you will get a quote from another shop because it really does seem like they're conveniently overpricing their services.
On the bright side, I'm glad you can enjoy some friend time and sharing her rig. Those will be long lasting, happy memories.
I really like your art, so I'm looking forward to getting something now that its available. 😊

Not too big a deal. Sometimes radiators last 20 years and sometimes only 5. Good to flush them out every 2 years and fill with fresh coolant. Main thing is not to let it get hot 🎉

Hello fellow, Brit. Maddie is being scammed by that garage and here the Southeast England, the same van under the manufacturers, Peugeot, Citroen ,Fiat and Iveco,.All of these models involved will come to £200+ labour @£200.00.
Many years ago I myself worked under the head mechanic and what is happening in the garage repairing industry, it is know for outlets to charge women one price and men a different price because they know many many females wouldn't argue with price.
Here in the UK, there have numerous reports on this serious issue and dealership pretend to swipe it the carpet.

I feel your pain! My rig is a 1992 shuttle bus and I’ve sunk a lot of $$$ into the mechanical. Always good to source parts for cheaper if possible. One shop quoted me $1500 for a steering gear box and I found one for only $315! I don’t begrudge any business applying a mark-up to make a profit, but 500%? Nope - especially when it was from a supplier they specifically purchase parts from. Turns out this same place also ripped me off on new ball joints and tie rods. Had a front wheel almost fall completely off due to their shoddy work 🤬 No guarantee that if you got another van you wouldn’t just be trading for a different set of problems. Best of luck.

Oh my goodness I'm so sorry Maddie. Sometimes multiple issues one after the other can bring a person down so I'm glad Alexandria is with you for support. I admire your upbeat attitude in the midst of setbacks. The bright side is that you're living a life of freedom, traveling the country (and world) enjoying life with friends and family and taking us along with you. I love your van, too (one of the prettiest I've seen) and your first is always going to be "Your First" and will always be special. Whatever you decide with regard to your van, we'll be here to support you! Hang in there.

I don't think they realize that your van is literally your dream that you made come true by your own blood, sweat, and tears. I'm glad you had Alexandria to help out! I'll say a prayer that all goes well! I'm going to check out your store as well! Keep staying positive, Maddie! You have such an incredible impact on so many! Things will come together, you just have to keep believing that. One day at a time. Keep walking your amazing journey and thank you so much for always sharing it with us! Sending lots of love and warm hugs!

$2000 to repair a radiator..... that`s bad really really bad.... 2nd would cost $100-$150 at most... release a few hose clamps and it`s out - fit in reverse order a few hours and your done.... RAM also known at Citroen, Renault, Vauxhall, (some have for engines in them)....

@@kylereese4822 In addition to charging a markup for the parts, as all service stations do, it's mostly labor. From the image she posted it looks a bit more involved than many vehicles to replace it. I'm still pretty sure she could have done it, but she might have been worried that it wouldn't take and would fail. It took me a while when I taught myself to work on cars to gain confidence in my abilities, and of course skills.

We recreantly purchased a similar van with outfitted for about $65,000 USD. We have 3 vans that we are not able to find replacements for so we are spending about $6000 USD on refurbishing upgrades to each one. Some is cosmetic ( rocker panels, repair to decals) the rest is new brake/gas lines , suspension, oil pans, gaskets etc. For your van that is driven a lot and carries the load you do ( your home) $35k purchase + $15k in repairs and maintenance over 3 years is similar to us. You do not drive in a consistent fashion so you will have issues with expansion , contraction and corrosion. ( Mountains altitude , desert extremes, salty ocean spray) Plan to spend another $5k in 2024 its cheaper then $65k for a new one.

@@Maddie.taylor I think I know what "fangirling" maens that my students tell me b/c I was just like, Ahhh! A message from Maddie!! haha! I totally understand now. I'm an old Gen Xer and I don't always understand the new lingo. You should keep those prints you made in Bend for your patreons! I would love to become one, but I have to wait til after my husband gets a job. He just lost his job recently, unfortunately, so we're on a pretty strict budget. It'll all work out, though, and once it does, I'll figure out how to sign up. Then you can send me one. You work very hard on those, and the people who help support you should get those.
Also, not to make this too long, but yesterday we went to this wildlife area about an hour away from us that we like to go to because the Sandhill Cranes roost overnight at this location (If you want to look it up, it's called the Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area in NW Indiana). You can watch them all year - some of them do hang out all year, but most people come for the migration when they roost at sunset in the fall. People come from all over, and yesterday as we were leaving a very busy parking lot, I saw what was clearly a vanlifer with Texas plates. We don't get many van lifers in this area; I generally only see them on the expressways like if I head to Chicago or Indianapolis. My 15 year old daughter is huge into the movement, so we always get so excited when we see one! Anyway, I hope you have good news tomorrow with your van!!

Btw every vehicle is different of course but generally speaking replacing a radiator is one of the simpler and usually cheaper auto repairs, just a few hundred dollars tops for the radiator and maybe a bit more for new hoses and clamps. You don't need special tools and it can often be done in an hour or two. Not sure if it's too late for you to do this but it's an option.
Basically, you drain what's left of the coolant (into containers that you either reuse or safely dispose of as the stuff is toxic to animals and bad for the environment not to mention illegal to dump, but I'm sure you know this already), disconnect the various hoses, lines and anything else connected to it like the fan, remove the old radiator, install the new radiator, reconnect the hoses, lines and such, put in new coolant (reusing the old coolant if it's still good), bleed it to get air out of the system, and that's it.
Replacing the radiator on my old car was one of the things I had to do to fix it, after the plastic intake port cracked and couldn't be safely fixed. I ended up getting a really nice all-aluminum, no plastic (better cooling, longer lasting) aftermarket one for an online vendor for around $150 plus shipping and it took me around an hour to replace, and 2+ years later it's still going strong.

Not only has she physically helped you out in so many ways, she has also helped to put a smile on your face and helped you to laugh and stay a little goofy which is definitely a good thing. I really hope that this is the last time you have a problem with your van for a long while. Gotta think positive right?

I wrecked my Promaster’s radiator in Belize of all places, my fault with bad judgement, , and I got a new radiator on Amazon from rock auto for $100. Delivered to Belize in less than a week ($40 customs duty) and installed in a morning by a shade tree mechanic. Still works fine 30,000 miles later and we’re in Nicaragua after a trip back to the States. Your situation sounds not right. I love my Promaster home. No change for us! Best of luck.

Oh No! I am in my broken Dodge as well. After some horrible decisions of going the wrong way I found my answer in the right place where it is warmer to wait until I can afford to fix my bad sensor. I don’t have funds to fix my problem is a $400 estimated fix which I don’t have. I did what I could and we get to see if we get to leave our “safe space” in the morning and run it all day so we won’t be stuck. Who knows how long this can go on.

Greetings from the UK....😢 Sorry to hear the issues you are having with the radiator. You are such a talented person, who build your own campervan. I feel confident that with a little tuition, replacing a radiator and fan is well within your capabilities. I have placed an order for a print, but feel that's not enough of a help. Do you have " buy me a coffee"? I wish to buy a cup or two.. Best of luck for the future. I only wish I lived closer , as I am a self-taught motor mechanic, which has saved me thousands.Once again Good luck.

Have you been going to the dealership? (Edit: Sorry, i see it wasn't a dealership.) In what kind of world does replacing a radiator cost $2000? This is borderline something you could do yourself for $2-300.
Look at how quickly he took it apart and put it back together for you on the first day.

I agree. I got my radiator and water pump replaced in my ford transit last year and it cost $2000 NZD ($1100 USD). I know each part of the world is different but it costs a lot to import things to NZ and this seems very expensive 😬

The shop adds on shipping and an extra fee to order in a part. Then you pay $25.00-$30.00 per hour for the mechanics time. If you need your vehicle back and they have to put the parts back then you pay for that. Probably cheaper to get a hotel/motel or stay with friends. There are van life insurance policies such at Roam available that could help. Or a warranty package through the car company. I’m finding especially in newer electronic dense vehicles it’s a must. My last oil change and tire rotation was $750. Now I will say I have a 2023 Mercedes but it still shouldn’t cost that much. Fees going up due to electric vehicles on the horizon?

@@chandralealife the last time I saw mechanics charging $30 an hour was 30 years ago. It's at least $100 an hour now.

@@hornz5 Depends entirely on your location. My father was a mechanic in Wyoming prior to his passing. Yes today $75-$130 an hour is charged however the mechanic (if working for another) doesn’t necessarily make that amount.

Had commented earlier that the blown fuse wasn’t related to the radiator leak. I had a feeling the cooling fan motor was the problem blowing the fuse. I would highly recommend taking a class on diesel engine repair/maintenance. Also, perhaps a basic electricity course.

Nothing appears to be wrong with the engine and working on one is a pretty advanced topic not for beginners, along with transmissions and A/C. But a basic course in auto repair and maintenance would be a great idea for anyone living full time in a vehicle, in fact essential.

You could have changed the radiator yourself. The damage could have been caused by pouring cold liquid into the radiator when it’s smoking hot. Standard operating procedure for a shop materials x2 cost plus flag hrs labor at 75-225 per hr.

My local ambo company used to run E-Series . Their fleet is 75-85 vehicles . They switched to Promasters. Its been a nightmare. The vans can have 100k on the odometer and be on a second or thrid transmission, and or a 2nd engine. The reliability is BAD. They have 7 sitting waiting for parts (unavailable)....and have begun scavenging parts to keep the fleet running.

I had to replace one radiator each in and 82 corolla and more recently a 93 corolla (this last time I had help, didn't need it, but I didnt complain). It is an easy fix. The trickiest part is draining out the radiator fluid without making a toxic mess. I don't know what pro mechanics charge these days, but $2000 seems high. That is definitely a larger more expensive radiator, but a corolla one would go from $70-$120 thereabouts.
