- Ask these 10 simple questions to know which you need (the difference is pretty simple).
The biggest mistake people make with this is overcomplicating it. Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should.
The easiest way to know whether you need an audio interface or a mixer is to start with your use case. What are you trying to accomplish? What’s the primary goal? What are secondary bonuses but not absolutely necessary for your use case?
Once you understand the difference between the two, identifying which one you need is easy.

Finally someone who knows how to actually give infomation!
This video is perfect! Thank you so much. I’ve got my first tour coming up and I’ll be gone for an entire month! I have expertise in mixing/recording but touring is a whole different ballpark, checking out your gear guide & other videos next.
Great video
Love it! Great, simple questions to ask to get to what you need. Similar in idea to if you need Finale, Logic, or Ableton. Thank you for sharing your expertise and experience
Thanks for watching Matt and thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I love it. No fluff. Right to it. Question I’ve been debating for some time
thanks for watching Benjamin, glad it helped!
what about USB mixers that also work as interfaces?! wudnt dat be the best option to go for? like the tascam models for instance.. I have a bunch of synths etc and tryin to figure out the best option for live recording myself while producing. ( i do hybrid: synths/drum machines and DAW all live recording) thanks!
I watched a few videos of other people trying to explain the difference and they left me feeling no less confused. But your explanation is so simple and clear, and now I know exactly what I need to buy. THANK YOU!
Thank you! And thanks for watching
Always so insightful!
Extremely helpful, thank you so much
Great video, right to the point. What if I am trying to perform live with Ableton? I went through your live Ableton setup course, super helpful. Is my best bet to just use an interface to pull everything into Live and mix there?
God Bless you Will, thanks from Brazil 🙏
Your questions really help my to make my choice! Thanks 😊
Happy to help!
Great work thank u
Great, thank you!
I want to record instruments and vocals at a home studio. Including Recording acoustic and electronic drumsets. And send it to my logic or protools sessions. I am a low tec person who wants something with really good funtionality and sound quality but also easy to learn to use as possible. Suggestions and advice on what to buy appreciated. Thankyou
thanks for making this so approachable
thanks! Glad it helped!
Looking forward to this one.
hope you like it!
Great advice. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much
What if you want to be able record a live band mix for rehearsal ans demos and have in ears at the same time? Im stuck as what to get as i know both will work for either but not sure what's the better of the two and what would be a good console/interface to get for a 5 piece band
Thank you
I am starting a two-person podcast using the Moano pd200x microphone, which has both USB and XLR options. I wanna have high-quality audio. Which one would you suggest, a mixer or an interface?
I would like to capture videos directly to my iPhone of me playing guitar with a backing track playing over top. Don’t really want to fuss around with recording audio and video separately, just quick, CZcams shorts. I’m assuming a mixer would be best for? I was thinking of my guitar into one input, an iPhone, playing a backing track in another, output to my iPhone, and just shoot.
i would get an interface
What about an MR18. I want to be able to do live music outside and record in my studio. I feel like that form factor would be very versitile
would be a great audio console
Buy both 😂
