Having named houses is not a wizard thing. Old houses just have names in the UK. In fact, a lot of people even carry the name of their house with them, so you might always have a friend who lives at a Rose Cottage, even though they've moved three times since you've known them. They just grab up the sign and take it with them.

Because out of all of them, Ron has always been able to see the silver lining in even the darkest situation. And lighten their spirits when things get too heavy. If Ron is lost, then they all are. The quote: “I ask this one great favor of you, Severus, because death is coming for me as surely as the Chudley Cannons will finish bottom of this year’s league.” Half Blood Prince
Old pig pens were build of stone. Pigs are so much stronger than people realize. So pens have to be built to withstand their weight. Usually sows, they do not react well to humans messing with their babies and will charge. Old fashion pens were stacked stones with a stone shelter, many even had a stone floor. Pigs can not sweat, so the stone helped keep them cool. The shelters had at least three sides, some were almost entirely enclosed with a pig sized doorway. So not some random dirty muddy mess. Pigs really don’t like muddy areas, they sometimes need mud to cool off, but prefer clean areas.

25:30 I think you guys have really hit the key to understanding the house-elfs on the head earlier in the episode, it comes down to the house-elfs seeing the loopholes and wether they want to use them or not. Telling a house-elf to do laundry is not going to make that house-elf decide they are released from service if they are happy. I think the same is true with handing a house-elf a book with an old sock stuffed inside; a happy house-elf says to themself that they have been given a book to hold onto while a Dobby sees the chance at freedom. A Malfoy family perhaps practices extreme caution in telling their house-elf to do laundry because they probably have heard stories of miserable house-elfs using it as an excuse while if a Weasley family had a house-elf they would probably never think of it and would have a rather happy house-elf who is disinclined to take the loophole.

    • @Milonerve
      @Milonerve Před 5 měsíci +2

I believe this is also why in Deathly Hallows, when Harry gifts Regulus' locket to Kreacher, it doesn't seem to ring a bell with anyone as to whether the elf could consider this giving him freedom. Of course it's jewellery, not clothing, but it's still something you wear (and he does wear it in a following chapter), but I think an unhappy elf might be able to make it work on a technicality just like Dobby does with the sock in the book... Of course Harry has only just started to treat Kreacher better and understand that the way he treats him matters, so I wouldn't say the elf is exactly happy or loyal to Harry, but he is to Regulus and both the mission he is assigned and the gift given have to do with Regulus'legacy.

    Hey brother!
Harry Potter has been a part of my life ever since Philosopher's Stone was first published. My friends and I have theorized over the years about many of your topics, and come to many of the same conclusions. Not always though 😂 As I have grown, HP has continued to be valuable to me, and now, as my partner and I prepare for our first child, I find myself diving back into your content so I can answer every question my son will have when I read the books to him. After hundreds of hours of reading, deconstructing, and reconstructing cannon, and non cannon, content, I am thrilled to bring magic to a new generation. Thank you for all you have contributed to our community. You are appreciated more than know. Now, onto business!
Another explanation for why Arthur gets in trouble for enchanting a car but the Ministry does not comes from the priorities of wizards as a society. They hide from muggles first and foremost, so it makes sense that acts that could expose magic, like a bright blue flying car soaring through the sky in the middle of the day, are more overt and treated more seriously than a normal, if fancy, car driving down the street with hidden magical amenities inside. It would follow, then, that a large part of Arthur's job is determining just how much of an impact any given magical item has on the Statute of Secrecy. Therefore then that means that the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office is actually WAY more important than anybody seems to give it credit for, which then means that Fudge is badder at his job than we thought because he keeps that office largely unfunded. It's just two people for all of Britain! That cannot be efficient. (Not that governments are known for being efficient but you get the point.)
Here is a question for you. How would things be different if Petunia was not jealous of Lily?
Snape is a vampire. Harry should have been in Slytherin. Live long and prosper 🖖 38:33

Raids are normally done at night to insure the target suspect is present and won't pull up while your investigating and catch you off guard, it also gives the raiding party tactical advantage as they will be fully prepared for the raid while any suspect would hopefully be caught unaware and possibly in a state of confusion due to being woke up. Also in modern times most door kickers have these wonderful little goggles we call nods that let you see in the dark which gives added difficulty to the defender.

The number 12 seems to be a running theme too I noticed recently. There's like 12 hands and planets in dumbledore's watch. Number 12 grimhold place, The 12 letters that Ron sent to Harry. 12 Christmas trees in the Great Hall in the first book. 12 lights at privet drive. 12 safe ways to woo witches. And now 12 teams in the quidditch League.

This is the only shade of purple I can find starting with T: Tyrian purple (Ancient Greek: πορφύρα porphúra; Latin: purpura), also known as royal purple, imperial purple, or imperial dye, is a reddish-purple natural dye. The name Tyrian refers to Tyre, Lebanon. It is secreted by several species of predatory sea snails in the family Muricidae, rock snails originally known by the name Murex (Bolinus brandaris, Hexaplex trunculus and Stramonita haemastoma). In ancient times, extracting this dye involved tens of thousands of snails and substantial labour, and as a result, the dye was highly valued.

Ron says: “He works in the most boring department. The Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office... It’s all to do with bewitching things that are Muggle-made, you know, in case they end up back in a Muggle shop or house.”
The Misuse of Muggle Artifacts happens when wizards bewitch objects to perform a different function than the original, like the teapot that attacked people (it was misused).
Also, I always assumed most objects wizards use - like clocks and radios - are simply wizard-made.

Something that always stands out to me when rereading the series is how Arthur reacts when he first meets Harry. So many times, Harry has to deal with new people staring at his Scar when they first meet him and going, " Oh, The Famous Harry Potter" etc. etc. But with Arthur, he doesn't stare at the Scar or even acknowledge Harry's fame. Its all, "Oh Harry. Pleased to meet you. Ron has told us some much about you." He sees Harry not as a famous person, but as Ron's school friend. And he is almost instantly distracted by his delight at the flying car. Its no wonder why Harry took to him and Molly so easily.

If magical objects like the car counted towards the trace, then in wizard homes it would be going off all the time. (Think about floo powder, brooms, or the magic clock at the Weasley's)
Of course, in a wizard home it would be going off all the time anyway, since it detects spells around the underage wizard rather than specifically detecting that they cast it, which still doesn't make sense. But hey, this is the writer who came up with the rules for Quidditch.

The difference between a wizard and a warlock, is that wizards typically gain their power through study, observation, discipline, and practice. Where Warlocks will make pacts and dealings, with beings (or attempt to trick them) from beyond their realm in exchange for powers. Love the podcast fellas! ❤

"One parent angry; the other parent proud."
Mom hated for Dad to collect scrap wood. She hated the mess. But my sister and I knew he always kept some. So one day we wanted to make a small house for the felt mice we made (they're so cute!), and we were both ready to use hammer and nail and go at it. Dad said, "I have just the perfect thing!" They were 2 wooden crates that had held asparagus, and, attached end to end and stood on side, they made an excellent condo building for our felt mice. Old Fisher Price furniture and scraps from Mom's sewing scrap pile furnished and carpeted it well! There was even a candy tin swimming pool with diving board.
But getting in with one parent while the other disapproved happened on a number of occasions at our house. Dad could be incorrigible. But Mom sometimes wanted to spend more than Dad would want to let go (it didn't hurt much). So each had their great things and their foibles.

But when it's time to get up for daycare, the super-loud coffeemaker doesn't get him out of bed... I love that you guys don't just discuss the books and find the most minute details on the way, but that you're so relatable doing it.

Love the podcast!!! I’ve become so addicted, look forward to the eps each week. Couple of ‘British-isms’ that make more sense if you’re from the UK to anyone confused:
Quite common for homes in England to be named as well as numbered, not a just a Wizarding thing!
Also normal for older houses to have fireplaces in every room, although nowadays they will often be blocked. My in laws have a fireplace in nearly every room.
Also, a personal theory I have is that household spells are HARD! Quite a lot of wizards seem to struggle with them, and we know that Mrs Weasley is a very good witch, so she could have studied them more than others. I think you need to have a strong magic to be able to perform them well, and maybe the house elves are particularly skilled in this magic in a way that witches and wizards can’t compete with, kind of similar to centaurs and seeing the future.
