  • I borrow a 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro with the standard range battery pack for my 70 mph highway range test. My friend Pete drove my F-150 Lightning Lariat with the extended range battery behind me for the entire range test to see how much battery he had left when the standard range battery was fully depleted.

Tom, thanks so much for inviting me along. It was such a great and fun experience to be included in one of your range tests, especially driving your F-150 which I have been anticipating the launch of as you were.
To Tom’s fans, he was being modest by not mentioning that over the past few years, he has given me a wealth of EV education which caused me to buy my 2019 Model 3 instead of another ICE Subaru, and also to become an EV advocate. State of Charge is the best EV CZcams channel!

Tom, just started watching your channel and subscribed a few weeks ago. Your non-biased opinion of the truck is what drove me to ultimately be comfortable with my purchase. You live in an area with similar weather conditions to me (I'm in Ohio and my parents are from PA so we all have about the same weather/seasons) so it's been good to see what you can get out of a Lightning with similar conditions to what I will experience. Too many reviews/videos I saw were from sunny California or mountainous PNW or Colorado. They all have their use cases but I felt comfortable that given my driving situation (mostly around town/for my 10 miles work commute and then one or two 500 mile trips back to PA/NJ a year) I would be happy in one of these. The Pro definitely seems to be the best bang for the buck. I got a leftover 2023 Fleet Order Pro ER and absolutely love it (wish I could have your Lariat ER but it was a little outside my price range, hah!). Thanks for not sugar coating the downsides to them but instead helping people stay informed on the those possible downsides and helping them integrate that information into their decision making. Too many people want to just say that EVs are for everyone or that they just suck and noone should buy them and there's not enough out there about the specific use-case of the individual. We are all entitled to enjoy our car of choice (I also have a 2014 Mustang lol) without feeling the need to shove it down everyone's throat. It's clear you love EVs but also recognize they aren't for everyone.

Will be first on line for the remodeled '25 that will have bigger/ better battery system and whatever else ford does to keep up with the competition, meantime I have an amazing truck for 37,500 that will no doubt be worth all of that if I want to sell it at that point. Very useful knowledge. Thank you. Ideally, it would be great to test a standard range battery on a Pro with all options, XLT SR loaded, and a Lariat SR loaded. It would also be ideal to test them over a mixed highway and city course similar to the EPA dynamometer simulation testing. One question I would like to know is what model did EPA test to determine the range (230 miles for 2022 models, 240 miles for 2023 models) posted on the Pro, XLT, Lariat SR window stickers?

Thanks again TOM, as my PRO will arrive next week and testing for my own benefit in a similar 'loop' will include some hills and valleys, although not strenuous, but part of the overall 100 mile run - then comes the test on the same loop with my 3,000lb camper to see how that degrades the overall miles - I suspect that I drive slower than your test, and will get 220 miles with the base truck test, and I am hoping for 100 or better with the camper.... we shall see.
Yes, the PRO is THE DEAL for a battery-electric TRUCK, which is really also a fantastic SUV 5-seater, a tremendous UTILITY vehicle, and an EV with all the practical TOWING POWER.

"fan speed 2" is probably different in every vehicle, but what really is important is a pleasant temp regardless of how the car achieves that.

Fords are designed at a cost point that reflects base models. I have had 3 Gen6 Mustangs; EB PP, GT PP and GT350. The one we still have is the EB PP, a brilliant car for the sub $30k we paid. The GT350 was fantastic, but for less than half the money the EB PP is every bit as fun, very economical and frankly handles better with the lighter engine. Sublime Magnetic shocks, huge brakes and supportive Recaro equipped GT350 aside…

Really enjoy your videos. Those is just a suggestion. Here in Australia, most highways are 60 miles (100km) an hour. On your range tests how about doing it at the 70 miles and the return trip at 60 miles. Then you can compare how much extra range you get by going 10 miles slower. Also, it would be more applicable to international audiences that have the same speeds as us 👍👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

21:50 That's not how percentages work. If he has 33% larger battery, then you have 25% smaller battery and should have 25% shorter range (not 33%) and he should be left with 25% state of charge if you are at 0%. So if anything, extended range battery overperformed or standard range underperformed.
