  • In this video, we cover everything you need to know about charging the Ford F-150 Lightning. It's a comprehensive review that also explains basic EV charging so even the novice can understand. We know it's a long video, and that's because we went for thoroughness over brevity since most F-150 Lightning owners are experiencing electric car charging for the first time.
This video is powered by Qmerit, North America’s leading provider of installation services for EV charging, home energy storage, and other electrification technologies.

Note: @16:30 in the video I say that you need to install the Charge Station Pro on a dedicated 100-amp circuit. That was the information we had at the time. Since then, I learned that you could de-rate the unit, all the way down to about 24-amps if you don't have the full 100-amp circuit to spare.

Tom, I have been looking for more detailed install info on the Charge Station Pro since I’m in Non-SunRun serviced State. I’m working with my electrician so I can future-proof my install should I want to add the SunRun HIS at a later date. There is very little information out there…no detailed Charge Station Pro install manual from Ford, only a reference to DC conductors (no conductor size info) in the online wiring schematic available via SunRun’s sales partner, and no response from SunRun’s Tech Support. I finally got a hold of Delta’s (the HIS manufacturer) and they confirmed the need for a #8 copper pair for the DC return. Any chance you could do an in-depth helpful install video for us who have to figure out our install w/o SunRun? I know Ford listens to you and I feel they need to know there customers in non-SunRun states have angst over the lack of info that SunRun shares with those who are not going to be there customers….. 😎

@@michaelabelaj1581 l don’t know…I’ve lost most of my enthusiasm for installing Ford’s/SunRun’s HIS…I will probably wait for the 2nd or 3rd generation solution. I just got my truck last week, so receipt of my FCSP, and any install info that comes with it, is at least 1+ week(s) out. At this point, I’ve stopped wondering about having the ability to provide power to my house from my truck…with all of the reported FCSP overheating problems being reported at the 80A setting, I just want a safe EVSE that charges my truck as promised……..

I'm on that level 3 A/C to D/C charging from my own house using a standard battarie charger that I buy from Harbor Freight from under 100 buks probably. Level 3 stuff. So? I've explained this process to many peoples so it definatly will work. That's it done. All you do is use a battery charger for this. Now you on a level 3 charging from your house so simple. Oh and if you have solar panels at your house that makes it even easier. Dont have to convert the energy. Already comes in naturally as D/C

Finally I found the charging information I was looking for -- in your video! I have a Lightning Lariat extended battery model on order, but there was very little information available that describes the different charging options and the chargers that come standard with the Lightning. Your video answered all of those questions. Yes, it was a long video; however, it had all the information that I needed to hear. I was already concerned that the 80A Charge Station Pro would not be a feasible solution because I doubt I can provide dedicated 100A service for its use without breaking the bank. You're going to need the correct main line disconnect but I don't see how it can't be set up to be automatic and be current sensing on the grid side to see if power has returned. I don't think it would be instantaneous because you would need to disconnect power from the grid before turning on power from the truck.

A third party solar company has to install a grid-tie inverter system between the Ford 80 amp evse and you're house. It will transfer automatically when utility power is lost and resume charging when utility power is restored. And you can set a lower battery limit so it doesn't completely drain the truck battery.

Thank you for the comprehensive video. Sounds like the extended range is a good deal even if just for the charging speed. Now If I could only get it in an 8 foot bed with the lower ride height. I use my 1994 F-150 for lawn service. The taller truck would blow my knees out pretty quick. And that 8 foot bed would mean I could bid on jobs that a 6 foot bed just can't do.

Another great video! Thanks Tom. I really appreciate your content. Your channel is a really excellent source of EV information. When you guest spot on other channels you’re typically the best par to the video. Any chance you would be willing to do a weekly (or bi-weekly or monthly) news update on the EV world? I know other channels do it but you are objective and BS-free. There is a lot of spin and other nonsense on other sites. Just asking. Keep up the great content. Cheers.

Thanks for producing this very professional and very informative video! I'm too late to reserve an F150 Lightning (maybe later this year), but the information is invaluable to educate me about what is generally involved in owning and home charging and EV. I am in the process of choosing a solar panel system and installer. Your comments regarding the DC charger got me wondering if charging the Lightning directly from DC solar panels is a possibility. Do you have any knowledge about that possibility you could share? Thanks again. I have subscribed so I look forward to more exceptional content.

Wish more people were like you Tom by doing the responsible thing and not attend events etc, CES in your case, when they know they are COVID-19 positive - unlike a certain well known tennis player. Well done you for being so community minded. The pandemic is a pain in the backside but it's impacts should've become relatively inconsequential by now if only people would do the basics so that the world could move on to the endemic phase. Hope you've fully recovered. All the best 😀❤️

Wow excellent video. I wish I had access to this video when I purchased my 3 three years ago.
The F150 Lightning will be an excellent product. If Ford can deliver a quality and reliable product. The back up power that 99% of the Lightning buyers will never use is amazing. The fact that the lighting has so many Ac outlets makes it massively useful. Ford had to make some Serious compromises to get the Lightning to market in a timely fashion. This is a first generation product from Ford.
The Charging speed is borderline obsolete. In 2022 you should be able to charge from 10% to 80%. In under 1/2 hour Dc fast charge and 8 hours on 240 volts. I do not believe Ford engineered in more capacity to charge. Now most people will feel the need to upgrade on the next generation 3 to 4 years from now. Ford is also not competitive with its gas trucks when it comes to towing and high mileage days.
For the Next 2 years Ford will have the only mass produced electric pick up. It will take at least till late 2023 for Chevy and Tesla to get up to speed. Both the Cybertruck and the Silverado seem to have much more to offer at a similar price point. The Rivian is a smaller Truck and it will take a few years for them to put out trucks in any real numbers.
