Damn... these iirc were like 400k US dollars in 1993; they only made 37 of these in US Spec and they are crashing them like Ford Fiestas lol - I love it.
I remember stumbling upon this race in a restaurant in Austin, TX. I'd been in love with the XJ220 since I first saw a picture. I was excited to see several of them actually moving on tv. That excitement turned to nausea pretty quickly. I was so sick about it I couldn't even finish my food. I think I even cried out "NOOOOOOOO" after the first crash. I thought if they wanted to get rid of them they could have just given me one :)
This makes me smile uncontrollably. The TWR shop was about 4 blocks from where I live, and I was friends with a lot of the team. At the time, I was working for a local radio station, doing motorsports recording. I went down for the practice/press days on Fridays, and then back down for the races on Saturday. I was at all of these. They had one configured as a press car - it still had two seats. I was lucky enough to get a ride twice - one from Johnny Rutherford, and one from Davy Jones. It's scary to go that fast in a car that big on a track that small, especially when you're on the side of the car that's closest to the fencing. That goofy infield dogleg was brutal. When Tony Dowe, team manager, invited me over to the shop before this started, I walked in and saw a row of 220's all lined up and damn near wet myself. That was almost more sexy than I was prepared to handle. Thanks to this series, and to my friends at TWR, I had the chance to meet Paul Newman and tell him how much I'd enjoyed his racing career. He was kind enough to sign a photo I had taken a couple of years earlier of him and Mario talking on the starting grid at Cleveland. Mario signed it a few years later. One of my most prized possessions. I tried to convince the guys at the shop to let me keep one of the dashboards they had stripped out while getting these cars into race trim. No dice - they had to ship it all back to England. I also tried to convince them how much money they'd save in freight if they just let me keep one when the series was over - after all, I was only 4 blocks away and could just drive it home. Again, no dice. I did end up with two IMSA driver suits, a couple of mechanics' shirts, one of Price Cobb's hats, and the giant fiberglass leaping kitty statue from the lobby, though.
Too bad they weren't able to race on the big Indy raceway track that day. It would have been nice to see everyone trying to push those XJ220's past 200mph! Or, maybe Jaguar just didn't want people driving their cars that fast and decided to go with the old "Mini" oval track. Thank for bringing me over here Doug!
It wasn't all Jaguar. ESPN wanted something to help boost the profile of their Saturday night races at IRP, and Jaguar was just done with IMSA and was struggling to either get a Porsche-based effort going in the new "IMSA" or an IndyCar team up and running. Jaguar was struggling to sell XJ220's, so everyone thought it would be a big marketing plus. Regardless of how insane it was to run those beasts on IRP's short track, getting the chance to meet all of those legends was priceless and something I'll never forget. I have some great photos and my program book is signed by almost all of them. It was really a treat to meet Rodger Ward, the man who won the Indy 500 the year I was born. It was also pretty moving to be standing right next to the car when Donnie Allison climbed into a race car for the very first time since his crash.
I'm from Hueytown and my dad built short track late model 2nd and 3rd gen camaro race cars. He was given expensive parts from the Allison family and our driver won almost every race we entered for 10 years from 79-89. I grew up in a racing family and we knew the Allisons and Bonnetts personally. It's great to see this old race.
I WAS WATCHING REVIEW THE BADDEST JAG EVA, AND I CLICKED TO SOME SUPER COOL CRASHES. BUT SEEING SUCH A COOL CAR HURTS A BIT. CHEVY, FORD NASCAR CRASHES ARE KOOL! THANKS DOUG!
Watching this in 2019 And i gotta say you never see a racecar driver crash a car that's not his and look back and still feel mournful. The Jaguar xj220 is the most beautiful and underrated Supercar ever. Created until this time. You have to be a true car enthusiast or a engineer to really know its genius..
Yes, Crashmasters. Had no brake lights first week. They quickly added them. I drove a few of them to northern Indiana to be patched up before the next races! Even pulled Paul Newman out of the mud! LOL
Drew Crowley I was there when Newman got stuck. Provided the crowd with a laugh during what was a real snoozer of a race. Honestly “crashmasters” was a poor fit for IRP and the crowd. Putting drivers way past their prime in the seats probably wasn’t the wisest idea either.
I’m not a fan of watching racing at all, but this was pretty entertaining. Especially the intro music I did not arrive here from Doug DuMuro, but he frequently brings his cars to our local cars and coffee.
I finally found this video! After years of searching. Such carnage. This would never happen today! What a waste and really probably did damage to the image of Jaguar and this car. Marketing would never allow this today. STUPID!
Imagine doing that today with Aventador’s! Does anyone know were any of the XJ220’s part of the 350 road cars built for the general public or were they separate?
What happens when you put old race car drivers in super cars you can't sell because there's not much interest in them after you've pulled back on the original V12 setup? You end up with this gem for people on the internet to watch many decades later. Thank you Jaguar...?
Can't believe they had old nascar drivers racing this cars, funny part is nobody would say jag made a crappy handling car Also crazy that Davey alison died the same year of 1993,an here he was at this event before
And this was at the time when the XJ220 was at it's most valuable, soon after the price of an XJ220 plummeted, wonder if this race had anything to do with that.
Doug the type of guy to make me watch a 26 year old video of big Jaguars struggling to race in a small track.
Kinda like big guys fitting into small cars...or big dicks in small vj's. Both of which doug struggles with
Lol
Ha yep, that's why I'm here too.
Got me too bro....
Thanks Doug!

Damn... these iirc were like 400k US dollars in 1993; they only made 37 of these in US Spec and they are crashing them like Ford Fiestas lol - I love it.
I heard these race models were around 750k US when I was flatbedding them to northern Indiana to get patched up. WHITE KNUCKLES! LOL
I was hanging out with the crew when one of them hit - they visibly cringed, and then one of them started singing, "Back home again, to Valparaiso..."
And why would you sponsor a race series in a country where you can't sell that car.??
If they didn't trash them all ... these cars today wouldn't be worth over 1/2 a million.
Doug DeMuro.
Vertti i knew it🤣
yas
Yup 👍🏾
Who the hell is he?
Be aware, doug demuro's viewers are coming
HighOctane u right

Somewhere Charles Intestine is wondering how this video is getting so many views.
I came here looking for this comment

I wonder how many views this had before Doug dropped the XJ220 video.
Calling it thoroughbreds racing around the dining room table is spot on.

So the concept for online racing was brought about a bit earlier than i thought.
Better watch XJR-15 showdown in Monaco, that's the real deal... real drivers
Damn this is very Competitive 😂😂 man!!!!! this is what today's NASCAR is missing today good Competition. Love it!!!

This is definitely what the Jaguar XJ220 LM Race Car from Gran Turismo, was based on.
THIS... is a 1993 race
All that crashing in cars that didn't even have a roll cage.
Everybody gangsta until us, doug demuro viewers start showing up

This was smart! Great advertising for Jag! Marketing Gold! I remember this series like it was yesterday.
It’s just bumper to bumper go karting but with real cars.
Awesome!
I came here after Doug DeMuro's review of XJ220, well basically this is XJ220 demolition derby
This is blasphemy.
This is madness.
This is JAGUARRRRRRR!

Did they get out of second gear?
THANK YOU DOUG, I NEVER HEARD OF THIS SERIES OF OLD PRO'S, WHERE IS PETTY??
These guys already raced brand new C-Types and 100 S.S.

I was looking up Bob Akin and I found out about this Fastmaster series I hadn't heard of. It might as well be from twilight zone.
Driving these huge cars around a short track is like running thoroughbred horses around a dining room table.
I remember when this happened.
I was like..."What???"
Now watching this in 24 hearing them talk about it while watching Cleetus Indy 800

dam it Douge . I wish you didn't tell me to look these guys up . and they didn't race in the bigger race track . dam all around .
Very cool
had no idea this existed until Doug DeMuro mentioned it, is just as finger licking surreal as he described
“These racecars are fairly heavy, they weigh about 2500 LBS”

That's an expensive ass wreck haha

So, basically, 3/4 million dollar bumper cars. Joyous.
By far the most ridiculous cars that have ever been put on that track.
