    The first thing I did on my, new to me, ST1300 was to rip out all the accessory lighting for several reasons. 1) it's a sport touring bike and not a carnival ride. I do not like all the extra accent lighting hanging under every fold in the fairing. 2) The wiring was ham handed and there was no way I was going to try and make it work. 3) A number of the accessory lights were halogen, a great lamp in it day but there are better options in today's LED world. 4) The wiring was just badly done and I just wanted it gone.

    I enjoyed the Metzler review, I had them on a bmw K1200 very grippy tyre, as soon as I wear out my Pirelli gt2's which were on my st1300 when I purchased it, I'll definitely be getting the metzler again, a very confidence inspiring tyre in my opinion.

      Hey Thanks, I've taken some criticism for the length of time I spent on this segment but buying the Metzeler can be confusing with the different specs. This was the point of the segment, to shed light on the variations. Thanks again for Liking & Subscribing!

      I had them on 2 of my previous bikes and on my ST1300. Have Michelins at the mo’ because Metzelers weren’t available but will try and get Metz’s next go around as they are wonderful tires.

    I bought my very first ST1300PA in early July and have been scouring the web looking for all kinds of things and advice. I must say, your videos are extremely professional and helpful. I'm somewhat of a new motorcycle rider in itself, having only been riding since 2017. I belong to a volunteer EMS group on motorcycles in NJ and am looking to do some upgrades on mine. I will definitely keep looking out for your videos in the future and hope to gain some knowledge on the 1300. I especially loved the video on reducing the heat. I hope to do that one of these days. Keep up the great work! I live in an apartment building so I don't have a garage like yours to work on it in privacy. I wish I could bring my bike to you so we can work on it together lol

    Great video! Curious, when had the rear wheel removed what did you use for the final drive moly paste? Honda 60 is no longer available, saw another video of a guy making his own with powder and grease.

    • @RodRidesWrenches
      @RodRidesWrenches  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Any molybdenum grease will do. Honda didn't make their own grease, they use a molybdenum. This is something a lot of riders overthink, the splines are contained and what you are greasing against is pressure and not rotational forces like in a wheel bearing. If you want to be particular, buy some expensive spline lube from your BMW Motorrad parts guy. If you want to be thrifty, remember lithium grease is for rotational bearings like axles, spindles and even steering heads, molybdenum grease is for pressure and waterproofing in areas like swingarm and suspension or drive splines.

    I thought this was a report on the Honda ST, it turned into a commercial for Metzler tires which I do not like. They cost more than they should and they don’t last as long as they should. I personally prefer Dunlops, Avon’s, even Perelli’s to Metzler‘s. Metzler’s cost about 30% more than the other tires, and they don’t last as long as the other tires. I don’t notice Dunlops or a Vons or Perelli’s losing traction, or drifting, or wearing out fast..
    Are usually don’t care if someone mentions a product during their video, but I quit watching this video after a few minutes because it seem to be just a commercial for Metzler’s. I never got to the end

      Hi Tom - First check out czcams.com/video/T-dD5gfh56Q/video.html I would say the bike's weight is noticeable when you are just moving it around and not riding. There are other, lighter bikes. When riding there is no weight difference. Thanks for questions & watching the videos! I hope you'll be a subscriber!

    Hi Rod. Did you ever experience the dreaded “Pan Wobble”? Any thoughts on it? Thanks

    • @RodRidesWrenches
      @RodRidesWrenches  Před rokem +2

      Remember you Asked! Nope, Never had three ST1300's, regularly ride quickly over mountain roads with passengers and even gear. There are a lot of excuses why this happens, worn or loose steering head bearings, forks low on oil from leaking, a Givi or other non Honda tour pack... I will put my money behind improper weight load and improper suspension preload/rebound. Let's face it, most ST1300 riders are older and us older guys deserve a nice comfy ride so we soften the preload and ignore the rebound dampening on the rear shock. Then we decide to head up a fast road we're unfamiliar with, add a passenger for their annual ride or load as much camping gear on the bike we can and still have room for the rider to sit. If you don't adjust your suspension to match your aspirations/weight/speed you are in for some hurt. When was the last time a rider who had this problem claims to have checked their suspension sag? I put more faith in Honda engineers than most rider's discipline... Thanks for the question & being a subscriber!

      @@RodRidesWrenches thank you very much. I really value your opinion. I’m an avid RRW watcher and appreciate your input. As with many problems, I think the internet fans the flames and blows things out of proportion. The fact that the Police versions were scrutinized in the UK and France made me think the problem could be worse than it is. Thanks again!

      @@TheMasonjarz No problem, I appreciate your viewership! I was once pulled over riding my 08' ST1300 by some RCMP on Harley's. They thanked me for stopping because they knew they were not going to catch me if I wanted to throttle down. We talked about bikes and they coveted the size and speed at which the ST1300 travelled, I even let them sit on it, helped with the ticket! Every take a close look at a Police Bike? Extra battery, a radio built for a car or boat, weird pannier modifications. This is part of the reason ElectraGlides are the mainstay in North America, they cannot go that fast and already have aerodynamic issues with that batwing! BTW I have a 4 video extravaganza coming this Boxing Week so thanks for watching👍

    You say that you don't want your brake light circuit shorting out on a trip, but I fail to see how your new system has prevented that possibility. You're still tapped into the brake light circuit, and I don't see any lower-amp inline fuse to protect the parent circuit.

      Valid point but by shortening the wires, not exposing them to the underside of the fender I felt it was safer than the previous arrangement. Now the tour pack wiring is no longer running down the fender just up from the tail lights.

    Informative video's , I've just got back into motorcycling after a hiatus of about 22 years mainly because of the high cost of fuel , I purchased a 2006 honda st1300p ex cop bike it has about 123,000 kms on it , it seems ok , probably the only thing of concern to me would be the drive shaft ,it seems to have a bit of play like when you roll off the throttle and back on it seems a bit jerky , is there a way to check for any problems with the drive shaft

    • @RodRidesWrenches
      @RodRidesWrenches  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Malcolm & Welcome to the Channel! Put the bike on the center stand and rotate the rear wheel with your bike in 1st gear. There should be a little bit of movement rotating back and forth but not excessive and not a lot of noise (subjective but more of a thud not a clang). There is one universal joint on this driveshaft at the transmission OP side. There is really no way to check it without removal which means the swingarm comes off. It could also be final drive lash in the gears you would need to take apart the pinion & ring gear and check the teeth as well as the contact pattern. Better to find a good used one and just replace. Finally and hopefully as the least expensive & time consuming, there are rubber dampeners built into the rear wheel hub. These dampeners are designed to take the shock load and wear out over time. Being a previous service vehicle I would expect there to have been hard acceleration and braking regularly on the bike. These rubber dampeners are designed to wear before the shock is transmitted to the other components I mentioned. The rubber also cracks and falls apart with age. Invest in a Honda (not an aftermarket) shop manual. This bike is a bit more complex than a standard inline four & good luck, let us know what you find!

    • @The_Touring_Jedi
      @The_Touring_Jedi Před 4 měsíci

      @@RodRidesWrenchesIn 99% of the symptoms described is usually rubber damper in wheel.Damaged shaft in Honda is almost impossible as to reach that point the bike could not be driven at all if rubber damper gets turned to dust.
