  • During the assembling of my Vincent Black Shadow from Revell in 1:12 I tried a replacement of the original wheel spokes with Silver rods from Albion Alloys. Before mounting the tires I painted the rims with alclad II chrome color. It's only a very little animation but I had to share my experience since it worked so well. Hope it may be helpful...

    believe it or not Tom I just won an auction and got the Revel 1/12 black shadow ...I opened it and the wheels are chrome...very brittle plastic and I am afraid to cut them in fear of cracking the rim! They look real good so I am going to leave them as is.

    Simply awesome work...you must have the eyes of an eagle and the hands of a surgeon...lol. I have not seen too many airplane models with spokes but I am going to try this. I have found a place here in Canada to get the rod and tube and have just purchased a mess of assorted wheels. I with prevail...lol
    You should start a school as I would definitely enroll.

    Hi Tom - fantastic video! I put a comment/question just now on the Vincent build regarding the respoke process (I found that video before this one!!) - perhaps when you have time you could provide some insight. I am puzzled as to why you work the rims apart, instead of gluing the halves and working the middle seam as you replace sets of spokes. I THINK you would still have to drill for the spokes like you do here, but it would be more fidgety to insert the spokes and nipples into the rim. Does the Albion rods bend easily? Have you ever tried insect pins? I have lots of kits with spoked wheels and with the exception of a couple of them, the kit spokes look too much out of scale. I love those bikes, but I don’t want to build them until I find a good method to respoke where I can remove the middle rim seam. Again, awesome video as usual! Thanks!!

      Thanks again for your kind words - I like the material from Albion Alloys and I've never had any problems with it. Regarding the rim halves: you have a good point here. Worth thinking about gluing the halves first together and do the spokes next...

    What tool are you using to cut such tiny engths of tiny brass tube? Just saw the motorcycle vid and what a great build and animation. Even my wife loves your channel and she hates models and my hopeless newfound addiction to them.

    • @TomGrigat
      @TomGrigat  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for your compliments - I use a scalpel for cutting the long tubes into small ones. Like I do it for rigging the WWI biplanes. It's essential to carve the tubes around very cautiously almost until they be cut through. The take a pliers and bend until it breaks at the cutting line. This is the method to get tiny tubes without deformations through the cutting process. I use Albion Alloys tubes for it.

      @@TomGrigat right, so you're scoring the brass and then snapping it off. Thank you for answering my question. I'm looking forward to seeing what you're up to next. Cheers.

    I want to do this with my black shadow model so badly. But I’m so worried I’ll fuck up the original plastic spokes in the process and then be put wheels for my model 😩😩

      I understand your concern but it is relatively easy to replace. Just work step by step around the rim.

    what spoke sizes for models in 1:9 size?

    • @TomGrigat

    I would have painted them first then kept the natural metal color of the spokes

    • @TomGrigat
      @TomGrigat  Před 5 lety

      That would have been a good idea when taking a different way. Since I had to cut of the plastic parts bit by bit there would have been unpainted parts. The metal color I used made no difference to the original though.
