I know this will come as a shock, but this project - like all others I undertake - snowballed into more than I bargained for. It turns out that the random used clutch that I had installed, which to this point has performed admirably, was barely hanging on by a thread. So on today's episode, we deal with that, the balance issue I went in to fix, new U-joints, and more. And while we're here, I'd really like to know... what's this thing weigh? Let's find out.
Can't wait to see how slaghammer and the demon run together
The demon will tear him a new one
Damn that car sounds so good
Time for a pre-race checklist... 1. Distributor cap screwed on... 2. everything else! What a relief to fix the vibration, and looked like a good thing you checked the clutch before you just sent it!
The crazy world of Arther Brown. I’m old as dirt and remember when “fire “came out. Love the channel.
I inherited my brothers 45s and Fire was one of them
You don’t know how relieved I am to see you say this. Not one single person I know has ever heard of Arthur Brown.
Oh the joys of clutch changes. Never done one on a hoist though. The demons a ripper, sounds mint!
I wear one of those quilted welding hats when working under the car while on the hoist. It softens the blow. I also frequently hit my head in a similar fashion. 👍🇺🇸
I think its really cool the respect you show by continuing to call it "Dales Daemon"!
Oh yeah. That’s what it is. Yes it’s my car now, and I have made a few (reversible) changes, but I feel my relationship with it is more like caretaker. It will always be his. And if he asked, I would be more than happy to toss him the keys for an outing.
That's the way to look at it. It is what it is. Just enjoy the race Jaime. Its looking and sounding good. 👍
Looking forward to the drag race great video
Bluetooth ignition! I love it! I would like to be an investor on that! 😆
Arthur Brown tidbits - during an early appearance at the Windsor Festival in 1967, he wore a colander on his head soaked in methanol. The fuel poured over his head by accident caught fire; a bystander doused the flames by pouring beer on Brown's head, preventing any serious injury.
On occasion he also stripped naked while performing, most notably at the Palermo Pop 70 Festival in Sicily, Italy, July 1970, where he was arrested and deported.
Absolute legend!
Nice! Can't wait to see the race!
I will be doing that same job tomorrow and next Friday I have to do it on my other car only difference is myself and the concrete. My back hurts and I haven't even started.Great video and good tips on U-joint install.
I feel that… I’ve done it the awful way MANY times.
The U-joint reminds me of a time long ago in a far away land when I put in a new U-joint in my 69 Fury and forgot to install the clips (don't ask why I forgot, let's just say my brain wasn't fully functional). I drove about 3 miles and the driveshaft decided it wanted to fly away. I can honestly say I have never forgotten clips since then.
Alright, that’s a good one. I haven’t tried that one yet… but tomorrow is a new day.
Oh man did i laugh when you just pointed out the distributor cap before you actually knocked it off the distributor itself! How in the hell did it run like that we'll never know but somehow i knew what was coming! Unreal!!
I don’t know… but it’s the second time I’ve done that on this car for some reason. I blame MSD 🤣
I bought a set of Magnum 500's for my 1974 Dart and within a year they were rusting. This is the world we live in.
UGH…
What do you mean Chill, If you took out the grille lose the bumper put in a lithium battery lose the over flow, windshield washer tank and wiper motor you could trim it up by 17.8763748 repeating pounds and totally kick Uncle Tony's boney behind. On the other hand it does my soul good to see you putting Newish good parts on this car and slowly fixing some of the little things that make a car not fun to drive.
Doesn’t have a washer tank - that’s repurposed as a puke tank. Haha. It’s going to race as a whole car. Now, on my Barracuda? A whole lot of stuff is extra…
Nice reference with Arthur Brown! What a wierd dude who is still alive!
Man she sounds good!!!!
I know it!
Okay, now I know for sure you have been at this for a long time. You are the first guy I have seen with the EXACT same U-joint swap technique as me! (Taught by my Dad at age 12, I'm 53 now) And you are the first guy I have seen even mention the "tension relief smack" on a stiff newly installed joint. And I have taken in an embarrasing amount of drivetrain related youtube. Pay attention whippersnappers, the "relief smack" is very important if you want your joint to take grease, and live. Good stuff!
Oh I’ve been doing it for a bit. Haha. Awesome!
I love changing clutches in my Mopars so much....that I just paid some other hack, errr I mean
"mechanic" to do it in my GTX this time.
Of course, that meant it wasn't done to my satisfaction, but at least I didn't have to worry the
wife with tales of 18-splines resting on my chest under a car (no lift here, boss).
I'm getting too old for that shiyat....
Yes, I loved the Centerforce I had a few years back, except for the "floppy" clutch pedal that
results from removing the over-center spring. Never could resolve that part, so back out it came.
Good times though, watching *you* wrestle the whole mess this time Jamie, so thanks. 🙂

Cool video 👌
The Tenacious D made me cackle and snort 🤣
Please make sure you wash your hands after working on the Ford and before you touch any Dodge parts

I like a mopar that sits high, more suspension travel = a better ride.
I've run driveshaft safety loops on all of my street racers. I remember watching driveshafts being thrown when I was growing up. With hydraulic lifters, motor oils heavier than 10W30 will reduce the RPM when lifter pump up occurs. I do remember the high bleed lifters, like Rhoads lifters, used to recommend using 20W50 oil though. I've switched to a smaller battery to save front end weight before. Accel used to make special super small batteries, but the cheaper way was when AC Declo came out with side terminal batteries, they were lighter than top post batteries of the same capacity. Back in the 1970's there might have been 20 pounds or more difference. These days, side terminal batteries are about 10 pounds (9-11lbs) lighter than comparable top post batteries. That's still a weight savings and a weight savings off of the front. There are small AGM batteries these days that the speed shops sell. I have taken front bumpers to a fabrication shop to put a series of large, perfectly round holes through the front of them. Fiberglass bumpers would have worked, but back then, there weren't the fake, shiny chrome coatings you could put on fiberglass, that are available today. The best we had was metallic silver paint and the fiberglass bumpers never looked straight. Some guys would just leave the front bumper off, but I wanted something there.
I run 20w50 high zinc because it’s all the local guys have in the budget line anymore. I would have preferred thinner. However, while I am running hydraulic lifters, I use adjustable arms that are lashed at zero, removing the lifters’ ability to pump up and create valve float.
My move would be to buy a group 51 Honda battery. They’re smaller and lighter. But the fact remains that I am not that concerned with shedding every pound - and I think I’ve spent enough money this week…
@@DeadDodgeGarage Valvoline 10W30 Racing Oil is good stuff. It comes in both conventional and synthetic versions.
Sounds great, even with a loose MSD distributor cap😯. I don't think it would run well with a loose stock ignition distributor cap.

Thanks for sending me down the Arthur Brown rabbit hole...you should see my interpretive dance I created based on the song "Fire"...it is a real crowd pleaser !
That’s cleaner than my shop

Don’t put the tools away till you’re finished with the job….
(Edit) your optimism is impressive
Anytime someone gets out the hellfire wrench, I love it!
The Hellfire Wrench!! Gold
That thing sounds GREAT!!!! I love It!!!
Keep up the good work buddy
Jamie brother you made that universal joint replacement look bloody easy one job I hate doing
I’ve done a lot of those. Haha. Don’t mind them so much anymore.
I love a hoist, never had one in my youth, but use one at work. They say, the top of your head is the hardest part of your body, good thing.

Finally! Someone got that one. Haha.
@@DeadDodgeGarage tenacious D fan from waaay back!!
Love the Tenacious D Tribute 🤘🏻
Looked cooler with the tow bar tabs....😊
Yeah… it gave it something. It looks naked now.
It's a good idea to check the runout of the clutch disk. Just install on the transmission input shaft with transmission in neutral and give it a spin. Not being picky but when you push the clutch pedal down, you are engageing the clutch.
I have to disagree. Accurate and consistent terminology is importance for conceptualizing how systems function. Disengaged = the clutch is not driving the input of the transmission. Engaged = the clutch is driving the input. Is your AC clutch engaged when it is not spinning the pump’s internals? No - it is engaged when the clutch is driving the pump. Is your PTO engaged when it is not driving accessories? No, the opposite. I hope that makes sense.
@@DeadDodgeGarage you were correct. I guess my 62 year old brain failed me again.
‘63 and ‘64 Darts look good without a front bumper. Just an observation. Carry on.
I totally agree!
Good stuff....and good luck....thanks..🔧🔧🐐👍
I thought step one was make sure there's enough beer in the fridge to finish the project lol have a good one
Yeah I missed that one… ugh.

You can now add loose distributor cap to the list of classic blunders
Truly a classic, too
Violins have strings…….fiddles got strangs!
So I heard! Haha
Great video Jamie 👍
Hi use the air gap method for setting the clutch.Great video thanks.PS please get a NHRA approved bell housing
I’m well familiar with the factory spec for setting the clutch. I only eyeballed it in this video for assembly, as it was way, way off. This car isn’t getting a clutch can. It’s doing this one race, and that’s about it as far as serious action. Hopefully my legs survive.
I love how you are down talking your car to lull Tony into a false sense of security.
Whaaaaat? I would never do that
Ah, you're keeping "my" demon in good shape...
Uhhhh huh…
@@DeadDodgeGarage you do realize I'll always say this...lol
did not expect the random bit of the lad not only play a guitar and sing but do it well.
Cascadian garage band featuring DDG when? You could use a-body front torsion bars as bass strings for a bit of heft to it.
Oh yeah, I was a musician long before I was a mechanic (or a CZcamsr.) I do play in an actual band or three as well. Haha.
@@DeadDodgeGarage oh wow!
Latent derogatory Ford comments aside, love your channel.
I only deride Ford because I have so much experience with them. I truly love the Windsor engine, but there is *a lot* to dislike in their engineering. Especially when you reach the early 2000s… Thanks!
Maybe a blow-proof bellhousing would be a good idea?
Oh sure, great idea. I’m not going to put one in this car, but it’s a great idea. I will be putting one in my Barracuda if I can find one. Otherwise, I’ll at least use an SFI rated scatter blanket.
Lol funny it ran so well with the cap Ike that
Tick might be a loose header bolt since it stopped ticking after it heated up. When it heats up the metal expands and the tick stops
It has never sounded like exhaust, and I have double checked them multiple times. But that is definitely true.
When I went from my old 3 finger clutch to a Centreforce diaphragm clutch it was amazing. Way smoother shifting, better balance and quieter. Getting the correct amount of free play is very important in order to ensure proper clutch engagement. Before changing out the clutch I was worried my left leg was going to look like it was on steroids. 😁
Yeah… the 3 finger this came with was INSANE.
I used to live in Raymond about 50 years ago. I used to misspend lots of time in Aberdeen. It sure hasn't changed much.
No - but they have managed to convert a bunch of cool old buildings into empty lots. That’s a cool trick.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Not sure that's much of an improvement.
Fun watching you work as always. My dream A body! (The Taillights)
Dump the brimmed cap. It blinds your vertical peripheral vision. Ouch,*$#
I sometimes remember to flip it around when working under a lifted car. Sometimes…
Never had to break in clutch on the Toyota truck. But I DID find the value in OEM disk, vs aftermarket garbage.
You can't take off the old tires without a massive burnout😮
I saved them 😅 and remember… new clutch
As always your videos are always worth watching!
Jaimie: First, remove hat so you can see above your head. Second, buy a camera stand that works. Hands free!! I'm here for you......
Have one, always forget it in the trunk. Try to remember to put my hat backwards but I’ve hit my head enough times that I don’t remember so well 😅
@@DeadDodgeGarage I wear a beanie type most of the time just for the padding value. 😄
I just pulled my a833 on my 70 duster 340 to rebuild, and when I pulled the bellhousing I found there was no pilot bushing in the crank. I guess because whoever put the engine in the car used a engine out of an auto car and the crank was drilled smaller, they just decided to leave it out but thankfully I found they make a a smaller pilot bushing that allows you to mate an a833 to an auto engine. I was just really confused that worked like that for so long. Hahaha the fun of fixing other peoples hack jobs
Wow… yeah that’s a good one. I always run the 90s Ram pilot bearing that knocks into the back of the crank. Works great.
@@DeadDodgeGarage It was really mind boggling. I got the car from my late cousin, he had a guy swap in the 340 4speed and 8 3/4 sometime in the late 80s. It pretty cool, it moulin rouge, was originally a slant six 225 auto. Never thought I’d own a pink car but I love it.
I keep hearing different things about AMD bumpers, mainly about they're thinner and lighter than factory or that they're thinner but same weight as factory, or it varies car to car or when you bought it, but maybe you already cut some weight off the front with an aftermarket bumper...
I'm glad its never getting the hole saw treatment like Uncle Tony's car!
I heard a navy seal tell an Arthur brown story involving an enemy bunker, and a heuy gunship equipped with mini guns, rockets and a loud speaker.
😮
The seals were pinned down when the helicopter came to help . Just as they flew by they played I'm the God of hell fire I bring you fire from the loud speaker and at fire they lit up the enemy. The seal said they were dumbfounded and just watched. He said it was awesome.
At least you have a shop.
That’s the good news
Cleaning can wait!
Hey Jamie, if you were invited to an episode of Jay Lenos garage, what car would you take, and why?
Easy choice - the Demon. It’s unrestored, under 100k miles, desirable 340 four speed car, I’m the second owner, and it’s got a great story (and some racing pedigree.) As much as I love my Charger, it’s a bit of a perfumed pig, and I don’t have any solid history on it. It’s also not a rare or desirable model or anything.
I had one of those Dual Friction clutches in my '72 Challenger, the Dual Friction material un-bonded from the disc. I wasn't happy. be careful with that centerforce crap
Interesting. Never heard that one before.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I'd send a pic if I could
Thx J !
Just when I kind of get over wanting a demon or duster you post a demon video and Kickstart the want all over....
I apologize 😅
You da man Jamie 💪
U Joints and flywheel problems,. Having those combos together must have really been rattling your dentures 😅.
It was so bad…
Nascar pit u-joint change😁
😅
Another great job. Back in the 70s I used a leather belt and a tire iron to hang the transmission in my 74 challenger. I changed clutches alot. I always did that crap on my back. Hey do you guys have a tenative date for the race yet?
Yes - next Friday…
Of course I know about Arthur Brown. Do you know about the band Redeye? (1970)
Don’t know Redeye, by name at least

Oh it’s nuts
Don't put anything other than gl-4 gear oil in a 4spd Mopar! I have a 69 roadrunner. I rebuilt my spare with perfect success! Then rebuilt my original! I know a lot about the 833. Trust me about oil! I run sta- lube 90 w. I also run centerforce flywheel, dual friction and centrifugal weights on pressure plate.
Chrysler used ATF in some years, in some applications. That is per a factory service manual. We usually run GL4, but I’m not talking out my ass when I say that ATF was an option.
Appreciate The Crazy World of Arthur Brown reference. I’ve got it on vinyl. It might have “crazy” in the title, but the album doesn’t sound remotely crazy……. Not by today’s standards.

It's more about the era, Arthur was one of the o.g. shock rockers.. Primitive yet entertaining.
The demon should comfortably make 425hp. Souped up the 340 could do that so the 360 should be even a little better.
400 horses is not challenging from a 360. Valve size and compression ratio are likely holding this one back, but there is a lot of good stuff in it. I would be interested to know what it’s making just for science. I’m not expecting bragging rights.
Nice to see the Demon getting its final wickedness. Seems liked your audience is fully and truly possessed. Anyway it seem that you're about to embark on a great adventure. Godspeed? No wait Demonspeed...lol.

Well, that’s probably true. Haha.
HI Jamie
Hi!
Tired jamie my favorite jamie
Ok no. Tired jamie is the most entertaining jamie.
That ought to be an interesting race... and how in hell did any spark get to those plug wires, and how was it close enough to being in time? Also, about 250lbs lighter than my '71 Coronet... less than I would have thought.
Magic! Lol. I truly don’t know.
You said joints !

Thank you Jake for letting us know what is going on with Ukraine and thank you again for helping the Ukrainian military get the trucks and other things that they have to have. Slava Ukraini
This comment definitely got lost…
Good vid DDG 👍
ATF would be way too thin for an 833. You'll cook it, especially if you're going to be hard on it. If you want thinner for quicker shifts, and only quick blasts down the quarter mile.... I'd suggest motor oil, 10-40 would be ideal.... might-could run 10-30 but give it time to cool off. ATF would be big No-No in an 833.
"Don't become a mechanic". Amen, buddy. Most thankless job I ever had. College educated; built show-winner cars; restored cars for fun and helped out so many people I'm getting into heaven without a doubt.
Still got treated like garbage. Customer was ALWAYS 1000x smarter than me. Nuts to that.
Now I just work on my stuff, and my friends' stuff. Not as much money; but much less stress and they are thankful when I fix things for next to nothing.
Brother, ATF was the factory fluid in the A833. That may not have been for all years, but it certainly was for many.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Maybe we should ask Uncle Tony? ATF was only recommended for very cold climates. And even then, I think one TSM states "If gear-rattle persists, switch to oil".

I didn't get the "yikes" on the filter closeup. ??
It was full of metallic glitter. It may not have been super visible.
I'm curious how you'd compare the 340 to the 360 you put in. I just finished up a Magnum swap into my 67 Dart with reasonable cam, air gap, EQ ported heads etc and haven't driven it yet as I'm swapping in an 8 3/4 so that I don't grenade the 7 1/4.
You can drive it, you just can’t DRIVE it. Haha. We 360 swapped a ‘73 Swinger and the 7 1/4 lived for years. We were not kind to it either, but it had small tires and an open diff. Zero traction. Anyway, as far as comparison, my experiences with the 340 were kind of weird. It always had a hesitation and never quite did what I expected it to do. It made good power and was more willing to sing past 6,000 RPM. The 360 revs smoothly and is making a lot better power down low, but runs out of poop earlier. I picked up several miles an hour in the 1/8th mile with the engine change, so that tells me what I need to know - but when I get my issues with the 340 figured out and put it back in eventually, I know it will be awesome.
Gotta of Tenacious D
If you just installed a valley pan intake gasket & had to pull the intake back off, would you reuse the pan gasket? Asking for a friend-
On a big block, I’ll reuse the valley pan all day long unless it got bent pulling the intake.
Do you guys have a drag strip picked out in Tennessee?
I don’t know what it is but I think so
I've been getting a lot of new U-joints (for my Mopars) coming with C clips that are not as wide as the groove in the cap. Have you had this problem? If not, what brand do you use? I've "heard" Ford U-joint clips will fit in the groove properly. My driveline shop says "it's ok," but I'm a Mopar guy. I can't accept "ok." I want "right."
The clips are basically never as wide as the groove - but they should still center the joint. That has been my experience since I started.
