Can I Rescue This 1970 Honda CB350 Cafe Racer Build? (Confessions Of A Secret Japanese Bike Nut)

  • Yeah, yeah, I know - it's not a Mopar, or even a car. But it is old and kind of neat. It's something else that I have long had love for, and funny enough, something I've never gotten to mess with since I really got my bearings as a mechanic.
It's been about a decade since I stupidly laid over my last classic Japanese bike - a 1972 Honda CB750 - and nearly found out what the underside of a Toyota Tundra feels like the hard way. That put a bit of a damper on the motorcycle thing for me for quite a while, as it turns out I really enjoy being alive. I traded that bike for a 1973 Dodge Dart Swinger, and stuck with four wheels for a long time.
But for the last couple years, I've been itching to find another small bike to mess around with. So imagine my surprise and delight when this Honda magically showed up in need of some help. And even better, someone already ruined it and started a cafe racer type build, which is something else I've always had an interest in. Anyway, let's dig in and see what's what on this little Honda twin.

Honestly, the way you portray the ups and downs sells it for me. The constant flipping between excitement at a new project and the exhaustion of it just not going right, then back to excitement is what sells your videos for me. It's relatable.

There was a time when I always had a bike project sitting around. Fast forward from 1980 till today, still have a dirt bike to dual sport(ish) project. A Suzuki RMX 250 getting street legal, just for little rides near my home. I really enjoy your videos of working on fine classics! Way back sometime around 1980, I had a Honda CB350-4. It was an odd machine and not terribly strong but it was my first street bike and I went everywhere with it. My buddy had a new Suzuki 450 that could walk me anytime but my 4 could catch him in the top end.
I think that 350 is pretty decent looking - tasteful even. It's a lot better than some of the butchery that's gone on with vintage Japanese bikes. Just clean up the wiring and hardware and balance the carbs and it will be a runner.

Yes on seeing more of the CB350. I had one over 45 years ago. Or maybe it was a CL, I don't remember. It was in similar shape as the one you have now. At freeway speeds and you give it full throttle, they don't go any faster. I think the extra energy is just used being used up making the exhaust louder. I wouldn't mind having another one or a 360 or a 305 dream to use as a commuter. I used to commute 20 miles round trip on 50mph farm roads on a 76 trail 90. My commute is a lot shorter now and I ride a ST1300. Kinda backwards. Any way like you said, It's your channel do what you want, but I'm in for seeing more of it. As a fellow old Honda bike fan, go for it. They run great, they ride pretty good, and I always appreciate making a bad bike better. I've got a '73 350 four. Runs great, though I've heard the twin is faster.

Obviously I watch for the Mopar content and the snarky commentary. Rode dirt bikes for many years and have always wanted a cafe racer. I learned to turn wrenches on 70's civics and accords, the Nippon speedo on that bike looks a lot like the speedo/cluster in the old civics, same color and backlight. Anyhow, if you keep making good content, I would be happy to watch.

Couldn't believe it. A guy who loves old moparsand Used to work on and cutomize old Japanese motorcycles. I used to have a channel DDRatchops 10 years ago or so. X managed to delete the account amount other things when she left. It was worth it to be rid of her. More old Japanese motorcycles would be great. A custom Cafe Racer with a custom Caraven hauler. Better yet mopars version of the El camino, the Rampage, as a custom Cafe hauler. I'd watch every second lol.

I want a red Rampage something fierce. It would get an SRT4 swap with a quickness. Haha.

To be honest, I watch even though I don’t really care that much about Mopars. I just like learning about stuff and I like your video style. So I’ll watch Honda stuff even if I haven’t ridden since I was 14. Jimmy Carter was president then 😮

Bikes are cool, especially ones that are total wrecks. I had that same bike back in 79. Rode it for years until I bought a new Kawa.

More Honda! I had a 76 CB125, great bike for $75. Dad's Plumber friend Athel, also did some small motor work got it running after buying it off my friend. Dad was a Carpenter, they did work for each other along with Dad's Electrican Joe, work for each other for near cost, all being Tradesman. Either way I had maybe $150 in that bike, including the purchase price and had lots of fun with it.
