  • This is the second part of the Fairwell trip. A farewell to the Western Maryland F's was run on September 01, 1979. We catch the train on the ex-B&O in Maryland. WM 7173-7163 did the honors, and the 7173 was fitted with two different 5 chime horns that sounded outstanding! Maybe some horn fan can fill us in with what type horns where on these units. I have searched everywhere, but could not find other videos of this fine trip to Harpers Ferry and return. I am certainly glad I got a change to film, and experience this trip with good friends. These clips where taken with a Kodak 8mm sound movie camera on 9/01/1978. The link to part one is below.

    Western Maryland fitted its cab units with dual Leslie S-5Ts and Nathan M5s. North were typically all bells forward. That made for one hell of a sound

    Classic video. The =WM= is by far my favorite railroad. So great to see historical runs as this preserved. The WM knew how to pick horns, that's for sure!

    There's something about these old train films that's so much better than watching modern videos.

    august 30, 1979 i was at washington station photoing the RS!s.
    when a northbound coal drag went by with a chessie,C&O blue, and these 2 F7s.
    we chased the drag shooting it 2 times, but had to stop to continue the trip south.
    i photoed the last freight action of WMs F7s, and it was typically,,,, a coal drag.
    1 of these 2 F7s suffered a traction motor failure on this passenger trip.
    this passenger trip was for the NRHS convention in baltimore.

    @csxt6573 Yes its true, but it was the trailing unit 7163. We had heard it down there, even before it got to us that 7163 burned up a traction motor. In the last clip, the unit was shut down, and I believe it was the last trip it ever made, and was retired afterwards. Thanks for watching....

    Are there any other known recordings of the horn that sounds in the very first few seconds of this video?

  • @theark-la-missrailfan
    @theark-la-missrailfan Před 6 lety +2

    Maybe the horns are either a Nathan M5 or Leslie S5D.

    I thought I heard once that this trip, on the return leg, took the life of the 7173. Any truth to that?

    That K5 doesn't sound right. It's still a pretty good sound even though it may be fouled.

      @@1jackdk It sounds to me like the audio was slowed or pitched down somehow, sounds more natural when I speed it up in audacity slightly

  • @trainzaholic
    @trainzaholic Před 10 lety +1

    The horn at the beginning was a fouled k5L and the other one, well... you know..

    • @trainzaholic
      @trainzaholic Před 10 lety +1

      ***** I know that. The horn from 0:01 to 0:07 was a K5L, the horn from 0:08 to 0:21 is an M5

    The WM F7's were the last to be retired by Chessie from revenue freights, no? I think most of B&O's were traded off in the early to mid 70's.

    Very interesting video - I really do miss the F7's - I wish many of them would still be in active service today (with the exception of the museums that is) :P
