This shows just how screwed up US politics has become. To have the head of a government service, in this case the secret service, be scared of the political consequences of an easy answer to a simple question is just plain wrong. She should have been able to go in there and easy say yes ,AR 15s make our job much harder and more dangerous. I admit that a straight answer to that question was never going to save her job but the real fear she was feeling from that question is wrong on every level. The country needs its top officials to be able to speak freely in this type of setting so that the proper actions can be taken to help and protect the country.

She was poorly prepared and unreasonably defensive...she at that moment was the sitting director of the Secret Service and as any leader can attest to, regardless of where the failure occurs, the buck stops with leadership! Yes, she took responsibility, but you can't sit there and try to deflect the questions...a stand up leader answers the questions no matter how bad you end up looking. I had to stand on the carpet in front of the boss enough times during my Army career...granted, nothing to this extreme but when you're trying to explain to the brigade Commander and CSM in Korea why one of your 18 year old troops thought it was a good idea to get blindingly drunk, to break curfew and to take a piss while the courtesy patrol officer of the day was getting his info, it does no good to offer up a bunch of excuses. Random acts of stochastic terrorism happen every day, and no security detail is perfect all the time. The executive position is a lightning rod for this sort of thing for a reason. There aren't enough security details to protect all the high end backers that influence their decisions. Essentially by definition a politician can't support mutually exclusive goals, so there are always going to be people upset at being under represented, or exploited. Better they have a visible person to focus their frustrations on with a security detail and an understudy in the wings.

Reading about how the rapid increase in technology and the increase in threats and the difficulty in retaining officers who are routinely poached by wealthy individuals and companies-has been informative. Trump and his extended family all running around the country and entitled to 24/7 protection is also unprecedented. I haven’t looked into whether the SS is funded appropriately yet.
