The Channel Islands National Park was established on March 5th, 1980. The park consists of 5 out of the 8 Channel Islands located off the Southern California Coast. The island of Santa Rosa is the second largest of the five in the park. The other islands include Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, San Miguel and Anacapa.
As a young boy, I've fished off of Anacapa Island with my father and brothers, but never set foot on any of the islands in the park. There are 3 other islands that make up the Channel Islands and I've only visited Santa Catalina Island as a young Boy Scout and once as a Scout leader. Without a doubt, Santa Rosa Island beats the pants off of Catalina.
It's sort of ironic, but I was actually trying to put together a trip to visit Catalina Island and hike the Trans-Catalina Trail. After become discouraged with being unable to book campsites and the cost, I decided I needed to find myself another spring backpacking trip. Although, this wasn't really much of a backpacking trip as it was a campout with a series of days hike, it really couldn't have ended up any better than what I experienced on Santa Rosa. And if I'm being completely honest, when I head back out to sea for a trip, I will be to visit another one of the five islands in the park. Sorry Catalina, but you're sort of a distant memory now.
Part one of the trip encompasses my ferry ride and arrival at the island as well as an evening hike out to Black Rock and the rare Torey Pine Forest. This short five-and-a-half-mile hike was remarkable and was only the beginning to the amazing experiences I would have in this magical place.

This is such a great hidden gem of a national park. Really love the way you captured it, Coleman! Great comparison between the foliage and the African plains, and great pic of the island’s foxes 🦊

Thanks, dude! I can't believe how amazing the Park was and that I've missed out all these years. Sure, we've got Yosemite and the Redwoods and a bunch others here in Cali, but this one is so unique. I'm definitely, going back...and often!
LOL....I just snagged that photo of the fox off the internet. If only I was that lucky. :)~

haha....yeah, those would have been a great place to setup camp. I'll have to sneak out there and do that the next time.
Thanks, John hope you're having a great week!!

Wow, what a great place to explore...good to see that you were able to enjoy a break in the weather too. Now that would be the kind of place both Otis and I could enjoy! Thanks for sharing...Bruce and Otis

Oh yeah...I bet Otis would be beside himself running and playing in the surf. Those little foxes might not like him around...lol! Appreciate it, Bruce! Take care!!

That was some cool footage out at Black Rock. It looked like you went swimming for a moment. Getting to see an island fox must have been really awesome to see. This is a great start to your trip, Eric. Really looking forward to your next video.

The year is still young, but this will be a tough one to top! Hopefully, part 2 lives up to part 1. I think it will.

Very cool. I think I’ve watched something about those islands on the discovery channel. It might of been during shark week or something. Idk but the islands sound familiar.

      @ColemanOutdoors  Před 2 lety

Thanks, bud! Yeah, I'm sure that's a good possibility. There are plenty of sharks and even great whites out in those waters. I know they can be fairly common out at the Channel Islands especially. That'd be great to see one...from the boat of course.

Hey Eric I found you through the SERE challenge, & man are you funny & entertaining!! 😆
Had to come & subscribe after that, I'd like if Grunt Proof would do a parent/child challenge, I live in Reno & with a lil more exercise I'd love to do something like this, I learned all my survival skills the hard way, FROM NECESSITY!
I was homeless at a time in my life, from the deadly Chicago winter's, to living in the Mojave desert, but since then I've been really trying to learn real survival skills to maybe do some things more efficiently, I'm 15 years far removed from this bad times, but they made me a way stronger person, mentally, physically & spiritually!!! 💯👍

That's awesome! I'm glad to here you've enjoyed the games and my personality. I really appreciate you sharing.
That would be a really fun event for parents and their kids. I was fortunate to have a dad and grandpa that was willing to take us camping and fishing throughout my young life. My favorite memories. I'm blessed to have 3 of my own and the ability to pass on those same skills.
Glad to hear you were able to work yourself out of those down times. And I believe you when you when you say it's only made you a better person. The trials we experience in life always make us better if we chose to let it be that way. It's inspirational!!
Thanks for sharing these comments and hope to see you around the YT!

Haha....it'll be okay. I think you'll have an awesome trip despite a less than choice site.😋 Really it's not that bad, I was probably just a little sour at getting rained on.
Have a great trip. That island is pretty magical!

Wow....thanks Rich, I really appreciate that.
I don't recall the showers, but that would have been real nice after that cold rainy day.
I went out to Santa Cruz this year, but have yet to complete that edit. Another great island to visit. I'm not sure which island I like better since they're both amazing places. I'll have to go a few more times to find out. ;)
      Thanks again!!!
