I just got one yesterday. I appreciate you posting this, it helped me get a better understanding of the features. I'm mostly a guitar guy and this is my first synth.
Weird Beard same story here man :) how’s it going with your music?
@@jameswebber-salmon7105 me 3, playing punk/rock guitar, sing and writing music forever. Mostly play covers though. Sooo-
I'm hoping to find MY sound and be happy with my own music.
I'm jumping headfirst into synths and hopefully, come up as an artist.
I got a Midi controller and a KORG Volca FM. NEXT, I plan on a Circuit Tracks groovebox, but I'm undecided between MiniNova and a Bass Station 2.
And no, I ain't got money out that wazoo. Zzounds does monthly payments. no applying, no card and no interest.
Is this pretty much a plug an play? I've never owned anything like this before but it looks like fun.. I don't need a complicated set of plug-in's or anything do I?
@@duckbrewI don't know either I don't think so I just purchased one too
Well give me the deets when you get it set up!! Lemme know@@excitationofstereocilia2103
Much appreciate the "measured" in depth detail. Nice to find a man who understands not only its functions but ventures a musicians mindset on creation - and without unnecessary diatribe. With most you tube offerings I get the underlying sense a lot of folks are on a quest for validation. I have the sense you're already wearing your big boy pants.(No dispersion intended to Angus Young of course) Thanx again! This item is second in the cue as money, determined to be well spent.
Is it me, or is it strange that this entire demo is video'd upside down?
Yep..strange
Excellent explanation / demo....Thank you.
One of the best demos on this keyboard. Ta.
Great demo
Great, finally what I was looking for online. I just got mine a week ago and needed some help with some of the features. Thanks for posting, it's a powerful little synthesizer (too bad for the mini keys)
Very very good video, great explain!
I bought one, I was going to buy an amp for home use then tried my hifi, sounds fantastic, B&W speakers
i've just had it too, great machine, and so nice ;)
This accents speeds up learning. I really do not know why. Thanks
lol
Wot
It's a very nice synth. They did what Korg did with the ms2000 and the microkorg.
I thought the vocoder on the MK was acceptable but not amazing. I'd definitly prefer the Mininova
Hi. Great video- I'm new to this synth, so I have a question about whether this has a 'sequencer' function. I see that at the 4:48 mark you use the arpeggiator to play a sequence that keeps playing (i.e latched) after you've stopped holding the keys down. However, can you sequence a set of notes, for example, like Pink Floyd's 'On The Run"?
Thanks
Mininova is amazing
Do you have a tip for me how I can adjust the pace? I currently only connected the synthesizer & headphones. When I use the cruise control, it shows the Info External Clock, but the tempo does not change. Vg Sebastian
I wish Ross Geller from friends was doing the demo
lol
He is better witch scotish pipes than with keyboards ;)
Wordless sound poems.
C'è l'ho da 4 anni ed è stupenda
Hi really good tutorial, Iv actually just bought one one these, been playing with the vocoder for hours its a lot of fun. On the animate mode some of the pads change the LFO rate, but i was wondering if there was anywhere else on the keyboard where you can modulate that rate? Also, on the perform mode is it only possible to modulate preset sounds, i.e. the keyboard itself won't produce sine/square waves etc? Thanks
I'm waiting for Bass Station ii so maybe you can do a comparison. Nice vid :)
@absolutemusicuk, is it possible to start with an Init or saw sounding (blank) patch, then use all the knobs to tweak it,
Or do i have to use a preset as a starting point?
I want a keyboard which has lots of knobs, sliders and possibilities to change sound whilst playing. I like chill and ambient and this is in my price range. Do you think this is the right choice for my needs? Many thanks
Wicked thanks :) I just mean where on the menu is the option to create a new patch, so to start from a wave, instead of working with the preset sounds. Thanks
does it have drum sounds patches or can you download them into it?
I cannot wait to get one of these or maybe the ultranova. I love the metallic, sharp sound. This will compliment the Roland jd xi really well I think. This thing just looks so nice too. If the keys were full size, it would be a grand slam. Imagine these sounds with some great effects. Man, I love these little mini synths and other drum machines. It's all I have and prefer. You can make just as good of music with these, as much as the huge, expensive one's. Just listen to the first sound he is playing. You are not going to get much better with a synth that is way more money than this, guaranteed.
I got a Ultranova a couple days ago and let me tell you that I love that Synth, the big keys are better for me.
VA synths have become pretty powerful. There is no reason you couldn't use one on a professional recording. I would say that the biggest difference is that you cannot change parameters as easily as on a synth with dedicated knobs for all the parameters.
I was comparing this vs the classic Korg microkorg synthesizer in my cart on Sweetwater trying to choose between the two because they are the same price and have many of the same basic features. This one finally won me over after watching this video because of the ease of use, wider range of preset effects, and the larger library of preset sounds. Can't wait to actually get my hands on one
So how'd you like?
Ty ;)
I've just bot one of these, BRILLIANT is the least I can say. Is there a way of spitting the keyboard to have sounds one end of the keyboard & another at the other end? Cheers
The mininova can be used as a midi controller in a daw?
Aaaand can you record directly to the computer connecting it with the usb?
Thanks :)
Does this piano work with any programs like pro tools, logic pro x, etc.? Please help!!
Got mine a few months ago and it's amazing!!! Up next I'm gonna get the Roland JD-XI I'm sure they will coplament each other
Which one do you think I should get? I'm new to this so I'm not picky. And does the novation mininova have steel drums? Because the roland jdxi does and its my favorite patch.
bobby yurczysyn I already have the Roland JDX and I want to get this one as well. I’m looking for a mini synth mainly for solo synth sounds to have while using my Nord Stage 3 and Yamaha Motif for my main boards. Still trying find that best solo synth
Could i plug this directly into my microsampler with midi cables and trigger the sampler etc?
Sweet demo, Chris. Even though it is stated that this is supposed to be a compacted Ultranova, does it also equate to a compacted Supernova II? I’ve been daydreaming about that one for nearly 20 years.
I’ve already got a microKorg XL, but this is also tempting me. They wouldn’t be redundant, would they?
I've got a Korg R3 (with build in vocoder and bigger keys) but I still bought this mini nova for 200 bucks just to compliment my set up, and I love this synth.... very powerful and easy to use.
Thank you so much for the quick reply. I suppose a little wiggle room is good- don't want the knobs to break off too easily. I kid, but thank you. I think I'm finally 100% sure on buying the MiniNova now.
How to get the novation editor plug in. and to get it to show up on Ableton 10 intro. down loaded novation drivers and librarian. editor was downloaded also. cannot find the file. I am not computer savy. Help.
Question! Is there a way of creating different tracks of sound? Say, I play a continuous arpeggio (as he does for most of the video) and on top of that I want to play a lead keyboard, with other effect maybe. Is this possible?
Besides from that: does it have any drum machine added to it? at least some presets with percussion to jam along?
thanks!
Nope, it's got one synth engine, so if you are using the arp. that's it, you can't layer another sound on top of it. Also no split on the keyboard. (you have to pay more money for that feature) Or just use a sequencer on a computer....
How do you set up a daw to conteol the tempo of arpeggiater
How do I activate the LFOS I keep turning them up but nothing happens
It's a great instrument for the beginner, I would personally prefer the larger full size keys though. I went with the Korg R3 instead of the Micro Korg, same concept with mini nova or ultranova... But the tweeking of the sounds is really easy on this mini nova ( I find my R3 display hard to read (it's red) This one is easy to read and very clear. You just have to look at budget and if you can afford a full size keyboard or go with the mini which I personally find a bit hard to play... I do love the ARP function and the Vocoder in it... it's extreme.
The smaller knobs on the right for the fx controls seem a little wiggly.. Do these feel pretty solid or are my eyes not fooling me?
Is there anything cool this can do that the supernova can't? If I can afford the supernova would you just reccomend it over this? the 1-8 buttons are really cool, but I don't know if that's anything better than how the super does it
I have a Xiosynth 49. What happen to the support for that synth? Oh I am having problems with the screen. Every time i move a knob or press a botton. It keeps going to back to show other types of info on other knobs I moved. I still like my first sytnth I ever bought... The Xio synth 49:) But I am thinking of getting the MiniNova when I get my money right:)
It looks like I *have* to own one of these :-)
does the mini nova come with the mic?
Yes..best ending in along time
Can i loop melody on it, like in Korg Kaossilator?
haha, love the ending ;)
I wish they left off the Genre presets off the knob and broke it down by usage. This will date the device. Dubstep, really? It’s funny to see in 2019. How about you stick with Bass, arp, pad, drum, experimental if you guys reissue it. I do like those performance pads though. Very useful concept for my live set.
Designed Audio The first thing I did was get rid of the rubbish dubstep patches and put in some actual useful ones
@@craigevans4694how do you do that?
mininova ,microkorg xl+ which one should i get?
How do I get the software?
ive just bought a mini nova and im debating on whether to take it back because i cant get a genuine piano sound out of it for a patch, can anyone help?
Does it have steel drums sounds?
Can I use this as a midi controller for ableton?
Is there a way to tap tempo at all?
Hello,
Can you make dance and hiphop on it?
Does it have a drum and base on it?
Can i buy it in Black?
Thanks and greetz.
Peter.
Thanks for the response! Yea, I see your point. Guess I´ll try the Mini out :-)
cool
Does this have an LFO?
How do I plug in the synth to my acoustic amp? Or loop pedal?
I've tried almost everything and it still isn't making any sound
Have you tried the headphone output into your amp? You'll need an adaptor 1/4" stereo to 1/4" mono
Hi, can I easily use this as a MDI-Keyboard via USB (to play VSTis/PlugIns that are on my PC)??
Thanks
Yes you can mate :o)
I'd assume so, I see a USB out on the back.
Is there a way to get the presets that come with Ultranova?A download somewhere? So i can use them on the mininova. Then with the free sound packs around 80 presets in the soundpacks there be alot of presets to work with.I'm a synth novice and don't really know how to program my own patches. Is it hard to program your own patches with the editor if your a patch making novice?
If you want to learn how to program your own patches, you should build them from the ground up rather than editing existing ones. You might want to follow tutorials that are available on the internet or here on CZcams. Those don't need to be for the MiniNova but rather about how synths in general do work. Then you can find out how you can reproduce those ideas on the MiniNova.
Most synthesizers work with the same basic principles, so most sound ideas can be reproduced on a lot of different synths.
can you record your sounds
Just got it today and bringing it back tomorrow :))))))
Bringing it back ?
can the mininova make big bass sounds? like dubstep's drop?
yes
I have the Ultranova & have thought about picking this one up to save the 3" of space or so. Or is that ridiculous?
Laura Woodswalker no not ridiculous at all, but I would keep both since the mini nova has a track record of keys breaking as well as it not having as many features as the ultra.
So I know that this can be used as a MIDI Controller, but can I send MIDI out of my DAW to the MiniNova so that it plays its internal sounds? I'm asking because keys are not really my main instrument. For the complicated or fast stuff I use MIDI editing tools like Step Input and Quantization. If this works, I'm guessing I would have to bring the audio back into my DAW out of the L-R of the MiniNova right? Thank you!
You can totally do that. If you already have a MIDI setup you can connect the MiniNova via a MIDI cable. But if you don't, you can just use the USB connection as well.
And yes, you would need to route the L+R output to your audio interface.
i just ordered one and i bought an kaosspad last week.i wanted to get an kaossilator a older microkorg with the kaosspad as a setup.and im hoping the mininova will replace the kaossilator and microkorg within this setup,a wise chooise? the additional banking and the increased voice options on the mininova over the microkorgXL topped my decision on getting one
hey there, how did you get on with the mininova, was it better than the microkorg?
theycallmejpj i think it is,it more versatile and it is pretty easy to use.The menu's and sub menu's are easy and feels natural when switching through them
mr8ty8 cool, thank you. I am primarily a guitar player and looking to flesh out a few songs and struggling to decide between the mininova, microkorg, and roland jd-xi. for me a nice simple setup is the best, I don't care about analog or digital as long as something sounds good
It seems relatively easy to use, I am totally new to synthesizers, I am a guitarist and need something small just to have next to me for certain songs, do you reckon it is what I'm looking for?
Can this be used as a midi? I can add my own patches to its keys through my daw?
+DelScully yes it has a midi in/out, it also has USB to connect to pc / mac for use in daw
Nicothepixelartist NTPA
okay thanks man!
Its a beautiful looking synth, efinately buying one of these, keep up the good work novation, this destroys the korg
can you assign a pitch bend to 1 of the 8 pads
I would like to assign a quick up and down a whole step or a variety of pitch bend moves?
Yup.
***** Any info on how would be appreciated
hi i just got the mini nova and use ableton but when i record into the program i can only hear the signal thru my headphones that are connected to the headphone jack of the mini nova which is fine but even when its all in the ableton program . its not that im not hearing it out of my computer or anything... its just not going thru the master or registering any volume in the master at all.. its audio to the master . im confused
On some devices the master output gets muted as soon as you plug in something into the headphone jack. Don't own the MiniNova, so I cannot check if it does as well. Maybe your unit has a fault.
Is it possible to record directly MiniNova sounds in my Daw via USB if I don't want to use analog outs ?
Evil Fab probably through USB.
I dont think so I think the USB is for midi transmission and reception to and from the PC and data transfer when saving and loading sounds.
so I,want to get roland tr8 and either from novation : 1)bass station II, 2)Mininova or 3)ultranova? ??
I want to use it to make good base lines, or subbase, and pads, and atmospheres and then for the rest ....
can anyone help me with decisions? ??
Well the MiniNova is basically the UltraNova, but without the Interface. So if you want to record your sounds as audio into your computer you need the UltraNova, which is around $100 more, but if you get the MiniNova, you are paying less, but then you have to pay at least around $100 to buy a separate Interface. So either way you are paying about the same amount. But if you get the MiniNova then you have to have another device (Interface) taking up space. Which is not a problem if you have a lot of room.
The Bass Station is for Basslines. The Mini/UltraNova are all-rounders. Great for basses, pads, atmospherics and Sound FX, leads, acid.
@@UMBR. The Bass Station II is really good for leads, acid, and fx too =)
I am thinking about buying one of these. I was wondering if this has the capability to do the following: I play something simple for 4 measures. Then I'd want those measures to repeat automatically while I start playing over it. What is the term for that? I'd want to be able to do it all live.
You're looking for a loop pedal. You record something, it plays over automatically, and you can layer other parts over that. You would get a synth, and a pedal to do that live!
+martin Lubo do you recommend any good loop pedals for a synth like this or microkorg
+DelScully I would honestly look at the Korg kaossilators (pro or any other) and boss rc-30 or 50. They're a bit expensive but I've deemed them to be the best in functionality. At least for my tastes. I've seen a lot of people stick with the kaossilator for some reason. I know that's it's own instrument on its own too so yeah
yeah I want to get an rc-30 for vocals and guitar loops, then wasnt sure what to do get to loop my synth but I'll probably get a kaossilator since like you said it is an instrument on its own as well! thats awesome, thanks man! :)
+martin Lubo The Yamaha Reface dx has an inbuilt looper for up to 32 measures.
Would you recommend the MiniNova or the UltraNova for beginners? Or neither of these? Nice demo btw! :-)
If you are fine with menue diving a mini synth is OK for beginners. Of course it's easier to learn with a synth that has dedicated knobs for every parameter, but those are usually pretty expensive.
no vocal tune/pitch effects with the ultra nova theres some straight forward answers. theres a reason used ultras are selling off cheaper than used minis.
Can these synths achieve a string-like sound(s) ?
yes
no no no no no CHRIS again :-Q
do I buy this or a microkorg? I am a beginner looking to make some jams, don't own a computer, maybe putting some chords onto songs in my 4 track
microkorg all the way
@@dolphitommy Why do you always compare an old rotten apple with this wonderful Williams Christ pear?
mikroKorg is a ridiculous table horn!
Mininova is a real synthesizer 😇
Hello it's good engine
so the microphone doesn't work on its own? i mean.. it's just an input for Vocodere and Vocal Tune?
***** well, i was thinking to the possibility to use it.. as a normal mic! I had a doubt because of what you said @10:51..
Thank you!
So much value for little money.
Tap tempo?
Aside from the portability, is there much difference between this and the Ultranova? I have an Mbox Pro and use ProTools, so i'm leaning towards the Mininova.
I'm thinking Mininova with a Novation SL mkII as my main MIDI controller
on the mininova there is no aftertouch on the keys the vocoder has more features and the ultra nova has aftertouch on the keys and a soundcard type USB interface and different controls. these are the differances I know about.
@@potaylowhat does aftertouch mean ? Thanks
how do i record from the built in mic into logic
The 1/4 outputs.
The Microkorg is also a good choice to look into.
Caleb James I sold mine and bought a Mininova..which is what I wanted to start with.
I think both do have there place. What is it that you prefer on about the MiniNova?
buyin one because of Hot Sugar
To me, Novation synths sound the best of all modern synths, including better than all neo-analog synths under $2000
Is anyone with me on this? Even with those old Novation VSTs you could quickly and easily get sounds that are tough in other VSTs.
I Dont like how Novations look, or the name Novation. But best sound is best sound. I wish it was .. Theres nothing in this video to show this though.
I quess you don't get digital artifacts with analog that you may run into with mininiva every now and then. And mininova does have a thin low end in comparison with some analog synths. I never used analog synths. It's my general impression from demos on the web. Still like my mininova. I couldn't get THAT in your face sound presence and fun from any other VA plugin.
What's best: this or the Roland JD-Xi? thanks in advance :)
This doesn't have drums or a looper/sequencer but I personally like the sounds this one makes more the Jd is a bit more mainstream sounding so for electronic music just alone that would be good victim a band I would choose this . (If only the microkorg had this functionality)
+Kevin Nel the jd-xi has a built in looper? and you'd pick the mininova over the microkorg?
depends if youre after functionality or sounds. the microkorg is more vintage sounding but sounds amazing. the mininova is more modern and has more functionality.
Kevin Nel
I'm more into darker kinda music, like making darker synth sounds rather then the up beat electronic sounds so do you think microkorg would be best for that?
DelScully yes
mini has some things up its sleeve that the ultra doesnt.so its smaller, has some more features and a lower price tag. the only thing the ultra has is a soundcard but its crap and youll use your own interface anyway so theres no point in really looking at that as a bonus.
This synth has more than meets the eye. I just got it today and It has impressed me with its depth. It really is a powerful synth, you just have to know how to treat it like a good woman.
huh
Ultranova x ever
just getting this in the mail in the next day or two.. cant begin to describe how pumped i am to slam on this lil girl.. Just wondering if anyone has done any experimenting with tweaking the lfos and being able to successfully create a solid wobble sound, on any patch.. i really love the fluidness of not syncing the lfo to give it that sound of space. If so, could you give me an example of how you would do this? Im new to synths, this being my first one, so if you could share some info on this, i would greatly appreciate it. :D
Absolute music logo reminds me of Target
both of them, like me ;)
i think it looks great, and love the novation synth sound..
Unfortunately that genre select knob means im not gonna be seen dead near one of these
Why is that man ?
So, If I purchased this synth, and made some rockin' tunes; could I then publish the songs and make money from that?
+BrodeRageTV yeah monica !
BrodeRageTV nope
so which is better the mini nova or the ultra nova?
Got slapped with an ad 15 seconds into the video. CZcams is wild
Love those big-ass knobs, but those LED lit soft buttons are off-putting to the whole design imo.
