    I keep coming back to this video, and, I'm stunned again every time I do what you get out of this synth, how tasteful and meticulous the sounds are made, at the amount of detail and work you put into them, and also the amount of work you put into this very tasteful and fitting video. Great, great work. I'm seriously impressed. If I owned this synth, I would buy this soundset, and, I never buy soundsets usually. 😊
    If people want to hear what this synth is capable of, I will always point them to this video. Way to go, sir.

      Wow! I don't know what to say...Thank you, I really do appreciate it! It's a great synth that can really do stuff beyond peoples expectations. I think it gets overlooked as a toy or something, never getting the respect it deserves like the Microkorg. It's it own thing though and I always think it's a disservice to compare synths. I like to enjoy their personalities and extract what I like out of it.

    Very nice and deep sound design. I am baffled to hear what this synth has to offer and by your work. Just picked up a second hand one. Have always been a fan of Novation synths. Had a BS rack in the early 90s and was eyeing this one (for its synth engine). As soon as it arrives I will gladly buy your pack. Keep the good vibe. Stay safe.

    • @Soundsauca
      @Soundsauca  Před 4 lety +1

      Nice one Olivier, and thanks for listening! Yes I really dig the Novation sound. It has this "syrupy" quality with the filter which a lot of other synths don't have. It's not the easiest synth to program, not because its badly designed, just that there's so many options in there. I've been tempted by the BS II a few times now, but I prefer poly synths. Best of health to you and I'll keep on trying here!

    I just bought my MiniNova 2 weeks before Halloween 2022 and have had fun making tracks using the Daft Punk package, now to try my hand at this one. I observed one very particular preset in this video @17:17 Summer Plucking: I was expecting a beat to pop up on it, but alas no beat. So I fired up my MPD 226 and MPC and laid out a beat while the video played in the background.
    The second half of Mushroom @32:38 can make an absolute banger as well, just lay out a hard-hitting kick with an offset snare and hi-hat
    Now as in the immortal words of TechMaster P.E.B. from the Album Bass Computer, "It's time to jam"!

    • @Soundsauca
      @Soundsauca  Před rokem

      Hi @Emulator Retro. Ah yes, Summer Plucking, people seem to really like that patch. I know what you mean, sometimes a beat is what's needed with the demos. I'm torn, some people see it as a cardinal sin to add stuff (I'm done with trying to appease people thou!). I guess I'm not trying to do a "watch my chops" kinda demo - plenty of those & nothing wrong with that.
      OTOH I see my work as more than just a bunch of sounds. It's more of a homage to a synth with the sounds available. I think in future I'll add some stuff! There's more things in the pipeline, but that pipeline is long and I'm not putting a timescale on it. Thanks for stopping by.

      @@Soundsauca I'd suggest filming videos showing the actual synth being used in real-time when you are demo'ing the patches, that might generate additional interest. Or demo the synths' functions/review/overviews etc. Also, a series on sound design tutorials as to how you created some of these and other patches would go over well. Make sure your keywords are correct in the video description as well when uploading to YT, CZcams uses those to categorize.

      I think the issue with the Novation VA sound in general is that the oscillators can sound a little muffled in some circumstances. By definition that's a part of the "liquid" Novation sound. OTOH I worked hard to beef things up before they hit the filters. The density parameter & phase are the places to work on. Thanks!

    • @chakko007
      @chakko007 Před 3 lety +1

      @@Soundsauca To me, especially the Mininova/Ultranova sound a bit thin, and not well defined, and also a bit "boring", meaning that they don't sound organic, and different on every note. The older Novation synths sound better to me. Anyway, I can just repeat myself when I say that you did a might good job there, and put the synth in a very good light. 😊 Wished I had such sound design skills.

    @GrzegorzGaezowski Před rokem +2

    I bought it because of the Summer Plucking - my new favorite preset! I was not aware that Mininova's engine was capable of piano-like sounds! One thing I disliked slightly was that a bit too many sounds have delays that are slightly too intrusive for my taste, but thankfully, this can be easily disabled in the effects section in the synth. Oh, and I liked the pads where there's almost a melody playing during the pad. Would love to find tutorials on how people make stuff like that with Mininova (and sounds like summer plucking too).

    • @Soundsauca
      @Soundsauca  Před rokem +2

      Hi Grzegorz. Love the fact you like Summer Plucking. I do remember creating it. It's always a great feeling when a sound suddenly picks the ear up and you know it's good. I understand what you say with the delay (and probably the effects in general). I'm learning that sometimes less is more and so in future I hope to get more balance to things. I'm always learning so!

    • @GrzegorzGaezowski
      @GrzegorzGaezowski Před rokem +1

      @@Soundsauca No worries, the delay can be adjusted easily. As I spend some more time with the patches, I can say that for sure I like them more than the factory presets. Also, I like how you assigned something different than Vibrato to the mod wheel on many patches - vibratos aren't that much useful outside of vintage sounds IMO, especially with higher values. So good job here! Also I like that the sounds are rich - at least on some of them, even when I take down or tweak an effect, they don't start sounding dull, but interesting in a different way.

    It's obvious a lot of work went into this. As great of a sound designer you are, you are also a great composer, and many of us will download the sets you make but still be curious how to get the most out of it. Would be cool for some of these in the future to see as part of the video a shot of your hands playing the part or a stream of the sequencer midi note view to get an idea how you used the patch to get a specific sound. Thanks!

    • @Soundsauca
      @Soundsauca  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Hi there. Firstly I thank you for your compliments. I will respectfully disagree! I'm certainly no composer and whilst it's true I pour my heart and soul in what I do it pails into insignificance against many many others. Still I do what I do and if someone likes it then that is certainly something I'm proud of. When they don't - well I'm still trying to come to terms with that one!
      TL;DR...
      A lot of things start off noodling on the keyboard. It's (for me anyway) a very fragile time where ideas good and bad get played out. That part would be quite boring I'm sure! I keep my sequencer almost permanently in record to capture stuff as I go! If an idea works for me I may develop it further. I'm certainly not a great player, but I know what I like I guess. Other times I keep the idea for another synth/project.
      With your idea of showing the sequencer stream - I have considered this, and I may do in future - I'd probably only show snippets though as I view my videos as a visual presentation of the synth. You're right, many sounds come to life with how they're played or sequenced. I love that moment when I hear something and go, yeah! that has something.
      The biggest barrier I have right now is myself (self confidence). I lost it quite badly after releasing Himalaya and since then I've been struggling ever since to recapture whatever "zone" I was in before. So to answer how I did it - I'm still not sure myself! I look back and sometimes don't recognise things. It's not been easy to equal or better what I've done so far. I've always said if I can't be happy with something I won't release it, so here, right now are probably 100s of ideas, unfinished works that may or may not see the light of day.
      I still have belief, and so I'm sure it's not the end, maybe just the end of the beginning:)

      @JoeM1314 Před 10 měsíci

      @@Soundsauca Thanks for considering my recommendation! It's funny that you speak about self doubt, I think it is for a similar reason I wrote to you. I have a JD 990 (and other vintage synths you haven't made banks for) and I find myself wondering why the hell I bought one if I'm not a great keyboard player, if I just take a sound here or there and record it and then it just sits there and collects dust. Haha I would consider myself not even really as far along as you are because you seem to have some solid idea of how to generate interesting developing chord sequences whereas I find myself getting stuck in equally spaced 4 chord loops that start on the I and ends on the V. Anyways all that to say I wanted to get some idea of what you were doing to make these sounds pop. Self doubt or not you've inspired somebody :)
      I'm actually back on a music kick after about 6 months of playing only 1-3 hours a week, so I'm motivated and feeling good. I should probably finally consider keyboard lessons at this point though :P

    THESE SOUNDS ARE AMAZING!! You are a wizard.
    I just inpulse-bought an Ultranova on Reverb for a good price ($265 USD!) as I remember really getting lost in it while playing at the store like 9 years ago, but I was getting a little bummed listening to some of the sound demos online as many of them are kind of thin..thinking maybe I acted to hastily. But then I heard this no longer have any reservations about it, you really made this sing!
    Many of the other demos are a bit thin and cold, with a lot of highs..I love that for cutting leads through a busy band sometimes, but how did you get this thing to sound so warm and fat? A bunch of these genuinely sound analog! Respect.

      You're too kind - thank you! The Ultra/Mininovas are extremely capable synths. The mod matrix puts many newer synths to shame making all sorts of bizarre things possible.
      Like everything it has it's downsides... The raw oscillators could be more beefy, however there's a few things you can do to improve this, mainly in the osc density parameter I think and subtle detuning.
      As you noticed - it can sound a bit soft/thin initially. Once you get the oscillator pressure up and going the filters are really sweet and handle modulation very well. Some people have struggled loading Mininova sounds on the Ultranova, but I've heard that if the librarian is used they are fully compatible. Thanks m8!

      Hi there! No external FX were added. Little explored area of the Mini/Ultranovas are their almost semi-modular FX chains. IIRC it's 5 blocks. You can even have 2 reverbs!!
      The power of this is you can have the chain in serial/parallel/or in between and fed back within itself. Crucially you can modulate the FX within the synth engine! LFOs can be used but will be monophonic in mod terms. This allows for insane timbral shifts, swirls and modulations. The only downside is the reverb isn't amazing but this can be mitigated a little with care. Hope this helps.

    Love that base at 51. The only thing I wish out of my mininova is you can't stack patches or have two or more patches running at the same time on different midi channels. To save a patch with changes you have to hit save 5 times. Cool to have a macro ability to fix that. I only like one filter setting the bandpass 8 18. If they added an actual analogue like korg filter it would kill all VA synths and the ability to do the multi patch thing.

    • @Soundsauca
      @Soundsauca  Před 4 lety +1

      I've often thought the Ultra/Mini could have been improved by being bi-timbral. In many ways they could have halved the FX, given 2 parts 2 FX each and then add one send FX between them. It is what it is I guess as they are focussed on the Peak/Summit now. On a few patches I worked pretty hard to get some stereo width going on. One way to achieve this is to use key-tracking in the matrix to affect pan. And also affect the tuning ever so slightly. It kind of works but no substitute for layering 2 parts. Maybe the answer is to buy 2!

    • @Soundsauca
      @Soundsauca  Před 4 lety

      The pad is the same sound. IIRC it's using a delay effect which is modulated by an LFO or loopable envelope with a very tight delay time, the twangs are from adjusting the delay slew parameter. The effects bus allows for various routing, so some of the sound is inserted into the delay block, other parts bypass this or go to other effects. At 26:40 another gated patch (FSOL) comes in, but that's audibly different (I hope!). If I could do it again I'd probably separate the sounds more as I didn't want to confuse anyone - but I think I just got carried away!

      Hi there. Thanks for your question. As I understand it, the synth engine is identical on both. I know both use the same Freescale dsp chip. Ultranova has a digital output and initially there were some differences with the vocoder effect. However an OS update years ago brought that feature. All my sounds were made on the Mininova and I never had an issue with the overall sound quality. In fact I’d put it higher than quite a few newer synths. The dsp algorithms are what matters and whilst always having a “Novation” sound the quality is top notch 👍

The only reason was literally getting my website and videos made that has stopped me from working on it.
      I'm very excited about programming it as the Peak/Summit is like taking the guts of the Mininova/Ultranova engine into HD and fusing it with the analog filters and better effects quality. I totally plan on getting to know her much better in due course!

Not sure if partly it's since I'm on Ultranova, but are there parameters being adjusted on the Mininova that are different than what can be on the Ultranova? As a test I tried to see if I could replicate the demo in some like Space Dreamer, Secret Garden, and others, but for some reason, while similar, they sounded different, and I couldn't quite replicate it, and I don't know why.

    How? How did you modify modulation depth?

    • @Soundsauca
      @Soundsauca  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi there, the mod depth(s) are modified by many things. Most of all the mod-wheel, the 8 animate buttons, sometimes the cutoff knob. Each sound has parameters assigned to the front panel knobs to aid in quick edits & effects tweaks in many cases. It's very organic as there are literally so many places to modulate! The I only thing I didn't use much IIRC was aftertouch. Literally because the Mininova doesn't have it. I know Ultranova does but it was a MN bank first. Hope this helps and thanks for stopping by:)

    Purchased this bank and loaded the sysex file into the Ultranova with BomeSendSX via midi cable, the UN receives the patches, receiving buffer and then all the names appear quickly till the last patch but.... i have still the old patches in the UN, nothing has been overwritten :-(( yet the protect function is set to OFF .... help !

      @Soundsauca  Před 4 lety

      Hi Rik, sorry to hear you’re having issues. Have you the latest UN firmware running? I think you can grab v1.4 here: resource.novationmusic.com/support/product-downloads?product=Ultranova
      The other thing to try is to use the librarian with this and transmit over usb. If this doesn’t work I will look into this ASAP tomorrow. I don’t have an UltraNova but someone else has purchased for it so it’s probably a technical issue. Regards

      @@Soundsauca Hi, yes i did but not with BomeSendSX and midi cable, weird as all the other patches i transferred to the UN worked well that way. So i had to install the UN librarian to my old XP laptop (the only computer i want in my DAWless studio), the Librarian did not see the midicables so i had to connect the UN with an USB cable and that worked well. So the bank is installed now and i can explore it. Still wondering why this did not work with midi cables, yet i could follow the transfer on the UN until the last patch but nothing was stored... Weird :o

      Rik Vanhoenacker that’s very strange. You’d think that a sysex file would be the same either way. Glad you got it working though. I will research this and see if there’s any other reason.

      Thank you! I have the mininova. Many sounds started off on the front panel, then moved into the Novation Mininova VST editor to finesse. Some of the more complex timbres were done with the editor as this was the only way I could work out all the routings without loosing my mind!
