  • Pied Beauty by Gerard Manley Hopkins - Summary Analysis - Pied Beauty by Gerard Manley Hopkins
    1809 - 1889
    Glory be to God for dappled things -
    For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
    For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
    Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings;
    Landscape plotted and pieced - fold, fallow, and plough;
    And all trades, their gear and tackle and trim.
    All things counter, original, spare, strange;
    Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
    With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
    He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
    Praise him.

    Did you sleep well last night? With the paisley to keep you warm I thought of this poem a few days ago because of the cumulo- nimbus clouds above the church spires and two toned horizontal striped layers of the sky ( pink and blue) it's a very beautiful pic with a plunging perspective and gorgeous street lamps on either side of you illuminating the buildings the cobblestones leafy or bare -branched trees and cars 💮❤💌And I love freckles.🍒❤💮🍎🤍🔹️💮

    As always iam gathering main theme of poem and poet biography briefly here it’s pied beauty is poem of praise and thank to god for magnificence of his creation. The poem is crutal or shortened sonnet. Tone of poem is exulting and awestruck or amazed . Key themes in pied beauty are beauty of nature variations and nature as reflection of god . Gerard Manley Hopkins he was English poet and Jesuit priest , whose posthumous fame places him among leading English poets. His prosody notably his concept of sprung rhythm established him as innovator, as did his praise of god through vivid use of imagery and nature . Only after his death did Robert bridges published few of his mature poems in anthologies, hoping to prepare for wider acceptance of his style . By 1930 his work was seen as one of most original literary advances of his century. It intrigued such leading 20 th century poets as t. S Eliot , Dylan Thomas.

    Love the word "dappled" because it sounds impressionistiic, sunshiny , shimmering, myriad, multi-facetted. 🖼🖼🥦🌍🟩🌎🍎🌏🥬🔷️🖼🏞🔹️🍎💌
