This is why I subscribe; a true DYI renovator is going to do this sort of stuff and is going to need to know how to recover from it. Also, it's encouraging to know that even a true master can make mistakes once in a while.

i've been following him for years, and i haven't seen anyone as honest and easy to understand and follow as Jeff. I recently renovated my Bathroom myself with the biggest fear in life but it turned out spectacular. it was my first remodel i ever did and i'm super happy with it. I'm now saving to do the two other bathrooms in the house which actually will be easier than the one i did first up, and i'm really excited about it.
i am extremely left-handed (meaning i can't to squad) so it says a lot of what i have to thank Jeff for. I've seen some outrageously retarded channels trying to imitate Jeff, some even talking down on the guy, but Jeff's work speak for itself.

Thank you for this video. I have some of the same disasters in my tub/shower area in my manufactured home. I tore it apart a couple years ago but I wasn’t sure how to fix it. Four years ago I also had a house fire in one of the bedrooms which I am in the process of repairing. I am a 74 year old widow and was under insured so I have to DIY the repairs. The walls have been rebuilt, siding replaced , new window installed ,new insulation, replaced burnt wiring and Tuesday having a electrician come out to check my work and reconnect the power. I am in Washington state and the cold rainy weather is just around the corner. Keep the videos coming.

i am working on a similar project. The trick to getting the subfloor out is cutting between the joists so you have about 16" wide x 20" wide or so. Then you can step on one side and the staples will pull out and you can lift it out. This avoid beating on it with a hammer. Bless you for these videos. I just bought a 99 double wide that needed significant work.

Jeff, thanks for showcasing how to address unexpected issues. This hits close to home, currently remodeling the bathroom in my century home as a first project and I’ve run into most of the issues you’ve encountered here.
While my subfloor isn’t particle board, it was tongue and groove planks that had been cut up to fit new plumbing. It was so bad that the flange was supporting the whole weight of the toilet.
Just wish I’d gotten to watch this series before I finished. You’ve laid out how to resolve these issues in such a succinct way that took me so long to figure out on my own.

The wire marker is usually just a paint marker with a special tip, either circle or u shaped, and that enables you to color the wire and change it to whatever color you need to identify it, if you don't want to waste money on buying proper colored conductors. My set came with red, white, green and blue.

I finally get the chance to work on an old house that I myself own. I spend 90% of my time fixing previous owners orders for their handymen to fix it "just good enough". For example, no one wanted to redo walls or pay to fix holes in them so they had their contractor run new romex wiring(the house is still halfway running off nob and tube wiring) through a hole in the floor up the wall to the appliance. Just dangling in the corner. Lol

I feel your pain. My trailer I had before I bought my house had water leaking into the walls from almost every window. I had to tear out the wall and about 3 feet into the room on the floor to replace all the rotted wood. It delayed moving in by 2 months as I had to pull the window, rebuild everything and reseal the window. The fact it was mostly installed with long staples everywhere AND long screws with a proprietary bit also made tearing it out a pain as it was so over stapled. Good luck as I can assure you there is more hidden damage.

He is right about curbless showers. They pretty much need to be designed in and made that way from the start. They are usually done on first floor slabs and are essentially a shower built about 4 inches lower into the foundation and then built up to the surface of the floor. I did mine with minimal curb of only about 1.5 inches above the shower floor.

I own a home in the Mira Mesa community in San Diego, CA. The homes were built by Pardee Construction in the late 70's. The shower drain in the master bathroom of my home, as well as every neighbor on my street who has remodeled thejr master bath, was never connected to the house plumbing. The downpipe from the drains just hang in mid air with the p-trap open a few inches away.
If you have grout around the shower pan that always has a mold problem...then it's likely the drain isn't connected to the plumbing. Unbelievable, but true!

About that dyed wire - I am an amateur and I sometimes use a sharpie to color a wire if it's a secondary phase wire, for example for bathroom ventilation fans with a delay function. There's a ground, a neutral, and two phases - one (usually) from a light switch so that the fan would turn on when the lights are on and the secondary would be a permanent phase wire so that the fan would have power to run through the delay period after the lights are off.

      @mraaaaaaa Před 9 měsíci

So what I would do is color a ground wire (which in Europe is green-yellow striped) and color it with a brown sharpie making it sort of a brown-green-stiped wire. Ventilation fans don't take ground wires anyway, so this way I can use a standard 3 wire (phase, neutral, ground) cable to wire in a ventilation fan without creating confusion to whoever disassembles it later.

Always enjoy your informative videos. Drilling for and pulling wire is electrician work here in the upper Midwest. Not sure about other parts of the country, but here only licensed contractors and homeowners can do it here. Every inspector seems to have a different level of tolerance for remodeling contractors doing licensed trade work. Plumbing is the same.

Did electrical for years in PA. Used metal wire staples all the time. They have a flat area to hold the wire tight but not damage unless you go crazy with the hammer. Since then I think guys are switching over the the air powered nailers and these newly designed “staples” as I’ve been out of residential for some time now. My dad was an electrician for over 40 years and never had an issue with the metal staples and a hammer. Just have to use your head and care about your work. Something you don’t see much anymore on these production homes going in new suburbs.
Oh and on the coloring the neutral red, sharpie baby!!! Works for black and red!! The supply house I used sold ones specific for this purpose they were huge and had a fat tip.

In the last few years, we have started to migrate to using color-coded heat shrink tubing for re-identifying neutrals. It is a bit more time consuming (not too bad if you have the tools handy) but makes for a really nice finished appearance.

That is so true about the 1%. I want a new 1% back door. But I'll have to settle for an ugly "it'll do" door. I looked at some curbless shower videos and decided the same. Nothing wrong with having to make a step up.

The distance from your tool collection is even bigger than mine! (Toronto-ish to anywhere in Florida is definitely further than Ann Arbor, MI to Houghton, MI: >500 miles).
Having the tools I need at the shop I'm at has been a real thing....
Good luck, and thank you for showing the mobile home construction as I'm expecting a remodel on a similar bath this winter - this is excellent learning material for some things to not be shocked by.

The electrician colored the white neutral wire with a permanent red marker... It's called phasing out. You do that whenever you use a neutral (white) as a hot lead. You can also use a black permanent marker as well, out colored electrical tape as well.
Oh, and an FYI - those staples are code compliant! But depending on location and code where you're in, some require the staples to use garments (a plastic covering with the staple)
