    We visit Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I explore the beautiful downtown and later we visit the state capitol building. A drive to the famous Mike the Tiger habitat on the LSU campus is an eye opener.
    We stayed at the Drury Inn.

    It's funny how you mentioned the sudden change from a low income neighborhood to a higher income neighborhood... because it's literally that way over the entirety of Baton Rouge. It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen.

    I've lived in Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas here all my life. Yes the crime has increased but so has the population that started back when Katrina hit us. It's been one storm after another that brings more people to our Beautiful city. We have a very beautiful city rich is southern hospitality and creole cooking you can't find anywhere else on this earth!! We let the good times roll...... but as you have us on your list there are areas of the city that have more crime than others. I live life for Jesus so I don't fear, but use wisdom, at the same time choosing to look at the beautiful state I've grown up in. It's home and always will be. Ty for coming to our state.

I think if more people were able to see either progress, or the lack of it, it would be easier to comprehend the kind of reality that people in these areas have to deal with on a daily basis. It will take a lot of compassion and understanding to help those most in need.

    Baton Rouge City Police Officer here;
    Most of the crime doesn't occur too much downtown and near campus. On-campus is mostly vehicle burglaries and the like. Go just about anywhere north of Government Street and downtown and it's mostly ghettos out there, the homeless and emotionally disturbed abound. I work around and near campus (they have their own police so I never go out to campus), and it is mind-blowing to see millions of dollars sunk into the university, then have ghettos within a mile on the same stretch of highway (Highland Road, specifically). Thomas H Delpit Drive is infamous for shootings and other serious crimes, where you drove through around the mid point of the video.
    On the weather, you lucked out coming early January. Come anywhere near the summer time and the heat and humidity are almost unbearable. Tigerland is also the hotspot area for crime and the mentally disturbed. We got some really good food around here though. Our community is so desensitized to the violence that most crimes don't make the news, shootings, and murders are so rampant. There are worse cities but man I wouldn't make this my first choice ahaha.

      When I was a student at LSU (started Aug '87, graduated '91), Tigerland was the place to be! We would go out to the bars there. It was "The Tiger" (which later became The Stadium Club) across the street from Sports and Fred's.
      The apartments around there were nice and full of LSU students. (I lived in a dorm on campus though.) I had friends who lived in the apartments. We would just walk from the bars to their apartment and back and forth all night. I never felt any type of danger.
      I moved out of BR in 2013. I went back for a visit in 2018. I got an airbnb in Tigerland.... but, when we arrived, I realized that area had really gone down-hill. The condo/townhouse that we were in - we felt a little bit scared to even stay there. I think there are so many newer, nicer apartments that have been built... I think it just killed the Tigerland area.

    Great documentaries, guys. I'm reminded of Hornell, NY where my dad grew up. Once a thriving railroad town (Grandpa once said "We had THREE breweries here!"), I watched it dying during the 1960-70's as a boy visiting grandparents. At one point, it just looked gutted to me, except for the old money properties.
    Same here in Eden, NC, where one small sector of old wealth, Leaksville, gets most of the tax dollars and the other parts of town have to fend for themselves. This was a batteau trade hub before the railroads, with busy fabric mills and tobacco farms generating huge wealth. Fieldcrest Mills once called this town home. I've watched several historical locations collapse in on themselves the 24 years we've lived here, including an 18c brick schoolhouse that members of Patrick Henry's family taught at on the street behind us. The other side of campus has beautiful million dollar homes. There are pockets of poverty one street over from pockets of wealth. It was a great chapter in my life, but not a city I would choose to settle down.

    Unfortunately, There are still predominately black and predominately white parts of Baton Rouge. LSU is a major university which has areas of wealth, near areas of poverty. There are abandoned houses in the predominately African American communitees which is actually a good sign (I'll tell you why in a minute) because that idea stemmed A LONG TIME AGO where they afforded African Americans houses near wealthier communities, to create a way to keep African Americans close enough in proximity to work for the wealthier. Keeping them maids, or babysitters, or landscape technicians etc. They could walk to work. The reason abandoned houses in the area are a good sign, is because God made a way for them not to be servants and generationally stuck in that situation like they were for so long. They may want to tear them down. Its like that all over the south.

    Loved this video. Brings back sweet memories. I got married in St. Joseph's cathedral over 28 yrs ago. It is not a big cathedral as compared to many but it was simple yet stately. I use to bike around the LSU campus & the lakes when I lived there . The area was/is still so gorgeous and peaceful. I really loved that campus. Over the last few yrs when I visited my relatives in BR, Mike the Tiger was Never out of his Grand Castle..His habitat is very impressive for a mascot.lol. When I was in 6 th grade, my Mom drove upto the "old" governor's mansion & made me & my brother ring the doorbell. It was a huge door. We introduced ourselves and the maid? actually let us in to meet Edwin Edwards. I remember him being so friendly and charming and he was wearing tennis attire holding his racket wiping his sweaty face. The one thing I can say about him at an early age was that he was a "people" person very friendly and outgoing. Now if you would have walked further on the Ms levee to the Ferry, you would have noticed that area becomes a lil more busier bc of social venues and an art? complex with several cool restaurants.

    Hey thanks for the blast from the past! I grew up in Baton Rouge and worked downtown many years in the 70’s and 80’s. I never saw any crime at all. I haven’t lived there for 15 years and went back recently. Yuk. They torn down blocks of historic buildings downtown to put in parking garages and several blocks to put the interstate through in the 1970’s. It lost so much of its charm. Traffic is an absolute nightmare. It’s a rude awaking coming from where I live now in Las Vegas. The roads are a heavenly and traffic flows like a well oiled machine compared to the sad shape of Baton Rouge. It used to be beautiful and safe -but not the roads 😁.

    • @catherineleigh9000
      @catherineleigh9000 Před rokem +1

      One more thing. There’s no cohesiveness in the architecture of downtown. Hodge podge and ugly modern that has no place being there. They were on the way to do that in New Orleans and had already torn down many historic buildings before they put a stop to it in the 1970’s.

    I’m not sure why Baton Rouge get such a terrible reputation. As far as crime it’s just as bad as other cities as well as poverty. Most of the crimes here are with people who know each other it’s not random crimes. It’s really NOT a bad place to live. However, it’s not a “growing city” like Houston, Dallas, Atlanta etc. Sure we lack development and opportunities but it’s not horrible. If you want to live a slower city lifestyle it’s a good place to live. It’s full of southern hospitality & culture.

      The inspiration to reject the traditional "rotunda-dome-and-wing" capitol when designing Louisiana's came from Nebraska. At the time, the Nebraska State Capitol, designed by Bertram Goodhue, was under construction and was the first that was a modern skyscraper instead of traditionally being modeled on the United States Capitol. Despite the inefficiencies of floor space in early skyscrapers due to the presence of elevator shafts, Huey Long insisted that his capitol be a tower. The Louisiana State Capitol has 34 stories and is 450 feet (140 m) tall, making it the tallest capitol in the United States
