    I've used pigments for about a month, its great. The indicators across the bottom of the interface that visualize all your control signals are very convenient, as are the little dots that trace across the envelopes, it really helps you figure out what makes your sounds tick. My favorite synth vst overall is UVI Falcon, it is like omnisphere and kontakt put together, modular without the hassle, insane modulation abilities, excellent effects, vast sound library. Another one to look out for 2019 wise is the upcoming kilohearts Phase Plant.
    My top5 :
    Falcon
    Pigments
    Arturia V 6 (DX7 and Prophet mostly)
    NI Komplete (fm8 in particular)
    Tie between Zynaddzubfx/tunefish - both of these are open source free downloads, I pull them out when I need something different and weird, tunefish is simpler and computery sounding, zyn is a never ending rabbit hole, the closest comparison you can make to it is probably sytrus.
    You ought to try a nicer hardware synth. I bet you'd enjoy something like a montage/kronos/prophet x/quantum/virus/nord/etc.

    Awesome and free: VCV Rack. It's a standalone soft sim of a Eurorack modular, but comes with a VST bridge, so you can connect it to your DAW. I love it, but it can be very CPU hungry, so most of the time I'm not using it in parallel with the DAW, but just sample it for re-use. It also can be combined with hardware (unfortunately I don't have any).

  • @CodexII
    @CodexII Před 5 lety

    Yes VPS Avenger seems very underrated in many of those "best VSTi" videos. I think it's because it had a rough start. The first releases were buggy and some functions were not in yet, I'd even say it was released to early. However it has grown up in the meantime, and it is a real beast by now. It might not be as deep into wavetables as serum (mainly because you can't generate your own wavetables as good as in serum), but it combines the best of all worlds: classic oscillators, (multi-)samples, wavetables, granular synthesis, multilevel fm-synthesis, am-synthesis, spectral/additive editing, resynthesis, a very powerful arpeggiator and modulation programming.

  • @Table-Top

      @@andysgtslick4425 It was beaten before it came out. UVI Falcon is the last word in synthesis, sampling, and rompling. Avenger is a close second and Rapid not far behind that. All three can outperform the far more esoteric and expensive Omnisphere.

  • @emiel333
    @emiel333 Před 5 lety

    Lovely video. The most common are Serum, Nexus, Sylenth and Kontakt. But like you mentioned it’s overused many times. IK MultiMedia has also some synths like Syntronik. That’s an emulator for old skool synths and sounds but it has a lot similarities with Arturia’s Legend collection. I have SampleTank 3 but its average sounding at best. They recently presented SampleTank 4 which sounds a lot better. Your also on Mac and did you ever tried Korg Gadget? It can be used as a DAW but the best definition of Gadget is that it is a hybrid between a groovebox and a DAW. You can really make good stuff with it but it’s not the cheapest DAW (around €300) Next month Korg will update it to Gadget 2 for free. The sounds from the synths inside Gadget are really lovely and ideal for edm music. But with all soft and hardware you love it or you hate it. Nevertheless I like it to mess around with.

Other great synths for EDM include Avenger, Zebra, Spire, Ana 1 & 2, Repro 1/5, Ace, The Legend, Predator, Go2, Harmor/Harmless, TAL U-No-LX-V2, and Synthmaster. cool selection u have there
    but jon where their your first vst plugins ? , i mean you didnt use free plugins when you started ?
    i remember i did started with free plugins and they were great like MicroSynth/xsynth/and alot of plugins from from linplug company back in the day like gakstoar /alpha/delta and that lead me to
    and their teaming with big daddy plugin maker himself ROB PAPEN which where i started tweaking knobs more with albino and then i got my hands on the rest of goodiesthose were my first choices their early versions like BLUE ,Predator, albino ,
    and you are right jon about narrowing collection of plugins ,i do have now over 800 plugins from old and new and i started to forget the old ones and use the ones that you mention them in the video
    but its the thing that old plugins still can be useful after all these years and i do have plenty of space on my 3 externals (kontakt libraries are HUGH indeed and i have all of them )

It is too much EDM - focused and would be the first I sort out. Like other plugins (sylenth, avenger) it don't bring something really new, even though is is easy to use. Otherwise I am a big fan of U-he and Spectrasonics, they have the best plugins. For some cases I use Arturia, NI rather seldom. Gforce has some great plugins, Synthmaster, Spire, Gladiator I use heavily.

    Pigments is great but a few things missing: 1. direct out mono sub osc. 2. Unison for the analog engine! Why is that not there?! 3. option for constantly cycling phase for unison in the wavetable engine, so when you have a constantly repeating sound like an arp bass, the wave phase continues to cycle away and you don't get the "machine gun" effect.

    I think, Sylenth1 is still great. It's the first synth I bought for learning how a synth works - and after I discovered Serum, I thought I shouldn't have wasted money on Sylenth. Nevertheless, I am still using it - because it's simple and really CPU-friendly compared to Serum. I mean you aren't forced to use presets :)

    U-he Zebra 2 should be mentioned, it's a semi modular beast. It has many synthesis types, many oscilators (basically 8), 8 envelopes, many filter types, waveshaping processors...
    Definetly for sound design capabilities, it rekts Massive and Diva. Even Hans Zimmer used it.

    Also what about other U-he synths (Repro-5, Hive, Brazille), any Tone2 synth (Gladiator, Icarus, Electra ect,), Dune 3, Avenger (another good all-rounder) and the underrated as hell ANA 2 & KV331 Synthmaster.

    and don't buy nexus, it's overpriced and kinda crappy

    • @maydaygoingdown5602
      @maydaygoingdown5602 Před 5 lety +4

      My problem with the Arturia collection is that none of them sound like the originals..by a long way out.
      The collection is decent enough for someone who's not used or heard the originals, take there emulation of the ARP 2600 for example..it sounds nothing like it..nor does it act the same.
      There Moog Modular is pretty decent attempt though I'll give them that, but that's about it.
      I used an American emulation of the ARP 2600 a few years ago and it was absolutely brilliant in both sound and actions...I honestly don't know how they managed it.
      On screen it didn't look very pretty and polished like arturias but then again...neither did the real one:).

    • @maydaygoingdown5602
      @maydaygoingdown5602 Před 4 lety

      @Shaxx lol, yeah I guess.
      I'm more old school, I was lucky to play the originals and owned quite a few back in the late 70's.
      I just assumed the idea of these Software synths where to replicate the sound of the original, thought that was the whole piont.
      But hey I'm not saying they are no good, I'm sure they are interesting enough to use, although they don't sound anywhere near the originals.
      I tell you something though that I didn't expect, I used to own an ARP Odyssey, and recently I came across Behringers clone Odyssey, and I got to admit, it's pretty outstanding, put it this way I would have no hesitation in swapping my original for it...due to the Behringer clone having really good effects built in and fully Midi and sounding spot on...really surprising...and well worth the money if your into Anolog sound.

    • @maydaygoingdown5602
      @maydaygoingdown5602 Před 4 lety

      @Shaxx Well, I've always been interested in synthesizer's, ever since the 70's to present day, I have a lot of them ranging from both older Anolog to today's digital.
      In the 70's I was all about Jean Michel Jarre. Oxygene is still to this day one of the most fascinating pieces of work I've heard from synthesizers.
      Then in the 80's More musicians became popular who based there entire tracks around synths such as Gary Numan etc..Cars wasn't too shabby:).
      I also like the odd album from Pink Floyd and U2...yeah I know..go figure:).
      I think Pink Floyd's live album Delicate sound of thunder is great, I could listen to David Gilmore play his guitar all day and night...the best I've heard...so yeah quite varied.
      I've been lucky in my life to meet Jean Michel Jarre, I had an amazing few hours talking about his synthesizers and his experiences.
      I'm an Airline Captain you see and I had the pleasure of having him on-board as a passenger once, so once up in the air I decided well..he can't go anywhere so I'll take my opportunity to meet an idol of mine:)...so I handed control over to my first officer and had some great conversations with Jarre.
      Going back to synths though, I must admit, I do love my Anolog synths more than digital.
      Saying that, I've just ordered the new Akai MPC ONE:).. looking forward to getting my hands on that.
      I'm thinking of sampling a lot of Anolog sounds and using them from inside the MPC ONE whilst combining them with the features of the MPC and it's own samples and drum beats.
