  • Omicron emergency
    www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-59631570
No one should be in any doubt, there is a tidal wave of Omicron coming
It is now clear that two doses of vaccine are simply not enough to give the level of protection we all need.
But the good news is that our scientists are confident that with a third dose, a booster dose, we can all bring our level of protection back up
At this point our scientists cannot say that Omicron is less severe
a wave of Omicron through a population that was not boosted would risk a level of hospitalisation that could overwhelm our NHS and lead sadly to very many deaths
Aged 18 and over, in England, third jabs from this week
    Three months since second dose
A third booster dose prevents around 75% of people getting any Covid symptoms from Omicron
Live data, hospital patients who have tested positive
    www.nicd.ac.za/diseases-a-z-i...
Omicron cases have now been found in hospital

SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern and variants under investigation in England
    Technical briefing 31
    assets.publishing.service.gov...
    Data cut off, 6 December
    260 confirmed cases of Omicron VOC-21NOV-01 (B.1.1.529),
Identified through sequencing or genotyping in England.
Additional possible cases identified through S gene target failure
Higher risk of transmission from secondary attack rates
Risk of household transmission from an Omicron index case compared to a Delta index case 3.2
Risk of a close contact becoming a secondary case, adjusted odds ratio 2.09
    Household secondary attack
    Omicron, 21.6%
    Delta, 10.7%
Three to eight-fold increased risk of reinfection with the Omicron variant.
A 20 to 40-fold reduction in neutralising activity by Pfizer 2-dose vaccinee sera for Omicron
At least 10 fold loss of activity when compared to Delta
Greater reduction in activity was seen for AZ 2- dose sera
An mRNA booster dose resulted in an increase in neutralising activity irrespective of primary vaccination type
Data are urgently required on the durability of neutralising activity
A moderate to high vaccine effectiveness of 70 to 75% is seen in the early period after a booster dose.
With previous variants, vaccine effectiveness against severe disease, has been higher than effectiveness against mild disease
Lateral flow, similar sensitivity to detect Omicron compared to Delta
Modelling the potential consequences of the Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant in England

    www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-59621029
Growth rate of the Omicron variant
    Level of immune escape
    Intrinsic transmissibility
    Immune escape of Omicron
5.1-fold to 12.8-fold reduction in neutralisation relative to Delta
    Intrinsic transmissibility
Omicron variant is growing in England at an exponential growth rate of r = 0.29 per day
This corresponds to a 2.4-day doubling time
    Reproduction number Rt = 4.0
    Generation interval of 5.5 days
Surge in SARS-CoV-2 transmission beginning in late December 2021
Infections exceeding peak levels recorded during the January 2021 wave in England
The most optimistic scenario, 1 December to 30 April in England
Omicron has low immune escape and booster jabs are highly effective
    20.9 million infections
    175,000 hospital admissions
    24,700 deaths
Most pessimistic scenario, 1 December and 30 April in England
    34.2 million infections
    492,000 hospital admissions
    74,900 deaths
    Conclusions and discussion
Without the implementation of further control measures,
hospital admissions resulting from the Omicron wave of transmission,
could exceed the peak levels recorded in England during the previous winter wave in 2020-2021
In populations with high levels of immunity such as England and South Africa
Omicron variant has the potential to cause significant disruption
In populations with low levels of immunity such Africa
Omicron may or may not out compete delta

Honest question - how is it that we can’t yet say that omicron causes less severe illness (too early) but we’re far enough along to say a third dose prevents all symptoms in 75% of patients?

Campaigns to vaccinate are based on overall benefits in the population. But you can always ask a GP or specialist if you have any concerns in your case. At least in Australia, recipients of AZ have to fill out a form about risk factors first (I know this first hand). I actually DID have concerns, and consulted with both a GP and a specialist (then got the jab).

@@ivanwalker5318 there is also barely any money to be made with dexamethasone, and nevertheless it was not hidden by some evil scheme hiding effective stuff, but is widely/universally adopted. I'm 100% "anti vitamin D deficiency," at the same time it ought to be recognized that vaccines make a bigger difference than vitamin D sufficiency alone. If I recall, 80% of the non D-deficient do not need hospitalization (maybe a study in Brazil, I'm not sure), against 87% of those vaccinated even with Sinovac, which is presumably the worst vaccine (study in Chile, which used mostly/nearly-only this vaccine) -- worth also adding that the non-hospitalization is not even the full picture, as people escaping hospitalization and death through vaccination are also likely to be spreading less of the virus and less mutations (unfortunately, not "zero").
I have the impression that media/news often covered that vitamin D has an important/complementary role, and even then there are those who see this as a "replacement," believing overdoses give one "super immunity" and make vaccines unnecessary, specially if coupled with other supplements. Certainly more of a highlight on that by government authorities would have the risk of promoting this sort of idea, with many seeing it as some sort of "admission" of the truth of a panacea.

Is there a standard that is used which clearly attributes the underlying cause of death TO omicron?
What is used to determine the death was CAUSALLY related with omicron?
Otherwise a dentist could announce “…one patient has now been confirmed to have died with tooth decay…” which may cause unnecessary panic.

Mostly, I agree with you John, but remember the SA healthcare system is a two tier system. For about 20% it is private and first world with HCU and ICU beds. For the other 80% the state system is poked. It is largely staffed by people who largely don't give a damn except for doing as little as possible for their pay cheques. Stealing stuff is a standard perk. It is under resourced and in a terrible state. Even politicians and civil servants get private medical as part of their pay packages. People in the 80% demographic do everything they can to avoid the state system, even resorting to "traditional medicine" in preference to going to a government hospital.

@Lientjie Note I say "largely" not "entirely". I also say it is under-resourced and in a terrible state. If you don't agree with that you must be the first state employee anywhere on the planet not to agree.
I do know people who either work or did work in the SA state health sector. Their stories are almost uniformly horrific. From having to recycle saline drip bags as catheter bags to being forced to cut adult pills so they can be used instead of paediatric meds because the budget has been closed down thanks to excessive theft.
I'll direct your attention to George Masebe Hospital where the doctors on duty over Christmas a few years ago decided to get drunk and let children die. Or the ambulance crews at Milpark who carry pistols for their own protection.
I also had the misforturne to spend a short time in the accident department at another state hospital in Limpopo. I discovered a used syringe stuffed down the side of the bed. Fortunately I didn't stab myself but when I pointed it out to a nurse and asked her to take it away she just looked at me and shrugged. Apparently it was my problem.

Dr Campbell, kindly review the unique Cuban vaccines, including the current phase 2 nasal vaccine (given the virus's entry through the nasal cavity),which is one of five Cuban vaccines. Two of the vaccines, Abdala and Soberana 2 finally received regulatory approval in July and August respectively.
The unique Cuban vaccines are the first Covid 19 vaccines based on the traditional protein vaccines as we have come to know vaccines for decades, as opposed to the experimental mRNA vaccines.
These have been in the making for many years, and thanks to the pandemic for its breakthrough. And Cuba aimed from the outset to create a vaccine that kids could take with adults.
Thanks to its public biotech sector and its government's deep commitment to public health, Cuba is now the only low-income country to have not only vaccinated the majority of its population but the only one to have done so with a vaccine it developed on its own.
Since September, Cuba's been in the process of getting World Health Organization approval for its vaccines, which would open the door to its widespread adoption, without patent restriction, by developing countries. It's already helped millions of Cubans, and it's poised to help millions more around the world.
Dr Campbell, you briefly reviewed the Canadian plant protein vaccine a few days ago. It is interesting to note that the Cuban public health sector, with its UN Gold Award winning scientist, has previously manufactured the first cost effective semisynthetic flu vaccine in collaboration with a Canadian scientist.
Even more astounding is that Cuba developed the world's first meningitis B vaccine in 1989 and astonishingly became the first country to eliminate mother to child transmission of HIV and syphilis in 2005.

In fact, if you had cerebral strength further than a toad, you would have picked up on what John was saying about one of the advantages south africa has over uk, us and canada. No talking head of big pharma would have said that. You are probably a delinquent ex student of his looking for some kind of vengeance. Keep in mind, your misinformation can harm innocent people! It really is sad that taking proper care of our bodies is still all but ignored since last year. A vaccine cannot replace our body's natural ability to protect itself. That's the reason why those who created these vaccines never made that claim. It was the spin machine that created the vaccine is the answer propaganda.
