The start of TNG is here! I'll be releasing 3 videos over the next 3 weeks that contain some hand picked episodes of TNG starting with this one! A fun introduction to the characters as well as some cool developments with Q and meeting the Borgs provided for some very cool episodes! See you next week for the Best of Both Worlds 2 parter!!

"The Inner Light" is a great episode. But it's entirely a Picard episode and, thus, won't help you to get to know the entire crew.
For a more well-rounded crew intro to prepare you for the movies, I suggest an episode such as Season 5, Episode 5 "Disaster".

There are a few more episodes you need to watch before the movies because of characters that you'll see in the movies have their genesis in the episodes and especially because of Data's and Word's character developments. You said you wanted more of the political stories involving the Klingons ( and Romulan)... well good news ... some of the episodes I listed ( along with those others did) bring you to that mainly because they are terribly relevant to the 7th movie "Generations" and for the 8th "First Contact." Watching the character development of Data is crucial to all the movies particularly the 7th and the last one with the Next Gen cast "'Nemesis!!!" so please consider adding "The Measure of a Man" (powerful episode!!! tears will abound) "Elementary Dear Data" (Sherlock Holmes in space!) - "Family" - "Brothers" ( Data has a twin brother???" -"Redemption pt 1 & 2" ( characters here are first seen that are pivotal to the 7th movie" ***"The Offspring"*** ( powerful episode for Data's character development, again mucho tears) - "Descent pt 1&2" ( very important to watch before Star Trek 7 & 8 movie along with Redemption pt 1&2 if you don't see these 2 twp-part episodes much of the 7th movie will not make much sense. Q is not relevant to any of movies, I'm not sure why others have said he was. I hope in the future you will watch the entire series, if not for your CZcams channel then for your personal enjoyment. Star Trek:The Next Generation was a phenomenal show and had many emotional, philosophical, and fun episodes. It was meaningful television. I enjoy your reactions a great deal. You are quite intelligent and you have a winning wit. You're clever and funny as well. I love that you appreciate Star Trek. There are several more series for you to explore in time. They also made for some superior television. Keep going, I'm always eager to watch your reactions. You Rock my friend!!!

I know I already said that, but you should watch "Family" before "Generations". Its the very next episode after "Best of Both Worlds", serves as its epilogue and is kinda important for the seventh movie.
edit: Also "All Good Things", the very last Episode of the Series as it directly refers to the Trial from "Encounter at Farpoint" and brings the show full circle. Its also one of the best Series-Finales of all time, no hyperbole.

I am so glad that you are trying to immerse yourself in TNG before moving into their movies. It really is essential. While I totally understand your inability to do the whole series, I might strongly recommend three more episodes just so you can find out what happened to 2 other classic characters. "Unification parts I and II" will deal with Spock's fate and "Relics" showcases Scotty.
If you had the time I would also recommend "Yesterday's Enterprise", which is a good preamble to Unification, and the series finale two parter "All Good Things parts I and II" which wraps up Q before the first feature film "Generations".

"Encounter at Farpoint" originally aired in a two-hour slot in a TV movie format. It wasn't structured as a two-parter, but was reedited into a two-parter for reruns, with scenes shortened and rearranged. There was also a lengthy preview trailer before the opening placing it "78 years after the original Enterprise" (presumably after its destruction in THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK) and introing the main characters ("Lt. Cmdr Data, an AN-DROOOIIID!") and previewing the plot.

I truly appreciate and absolutely love that you're diving into some of the best TNG episodes! Q is one of the best antagonists in Next Generation--I wouldn't necessarily call him a villain because there were some episodes where he was on Captain Picard's side and some where, very reluctantly, the 24th Century Enterprise crew helped him out as well. Q was such a popular character that he appeared at least once or twice a year in The Next Generation and gave the show some very memorable moments. He was so popular, in fact, that he even made an appearance in an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space 9 and then went on to make regular recurring appearances in Star Trek: Voyager (one of my favorites is an episode where Q is trying to mate with Captain Janeway). He even recently returned earlier this year in the entire second season of Star Trek: Picard. Even Whoopi Goldberg/Guinan returned in this year's season of Picard! I clearly remember when I was 10 and this show premiered, I was so excited...although I have to admit, there was a part of me that wondered if the show would work without Capt. Kirk and crew, but after Encounter At Farpoint, my fears were gone and I thought this is going to be an exciting show. I wasn't disappointed. When Q introduces the Borg, that was exciting and frightening. By the third season, thus show really hit its peak and just got better and better, going from strength to strength!

The board game you see near the end of "Q Who" is a type of 3D chess, called "Tri-Dimensional Chess" or "Tri-D Chess", seen occasionally in the original series (although actual _rules_ for it were developed independently of the franchise, years later).
Oh, also, an aside: the _USS Enterprise_ of the original series, as well as the first two films (albeit refit), was the _Constitution_ class NCC-1701. After that was destroyed at the end of _The Search for Spock,_ another _Constitutiuon_ class ship was refit and given the name, with registry number NCC-1701-A, seen at the end of _The Voyage Home_ and for the rest of the original series films. The _Enterprise_ in _The Next Generation_ is _Galaxy_ class and has registry number NCC-1701-D, implying that there were two more _USS Enterprise_ s in between. Indeed, both B ( _Excelsior_ class) and C ( _Ambassador_ class) come up at certain points.
And while I'm talking about relations between the two series and their films, it's worth noting: _The Voyage Home_ was released in 1986, and _The Next Generation_ premiered the next year. This means that the last two original-series films were released during the run of _The Next Generation._

I've had a great time watching your reactions to the first six films and I'm so glad you're getting acquainted with the TNG crew before jumping in to 'Generations'.
You obviously have your six episodes planned out, but I would have suggested one of the comedy Data episodes to get a better insight into his character - there's a holodeck mystery involving Sherlock Holmes's adversary Moriarty ('Elementary, Dear Data') and one where we just see the whole 24 hours of Data's day ('Data's Day').
The 'head in hands' gesture could have been invented for Wesley Crusher - you have it perfected already.
I saw Patrick Stewart on stage years ago, in his one-man performance of 'A Christmas Carol'. Brilliant. And a couple of years ago I was a few feet away from Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi) in an intimate little theatre in London - she was playing an ageing actress who'd once starred in a successful sci-fi TV show. (As you mentioned Doctor Who, her partner in the play was Jacqueline King, Donna Noble's mother.)
Deanna gets better as the show progresses.
The phrase 'Post-Atomic Horror' has bit more resonance to it these days, than when I first saw this in 1990.

18:38 - The Holodeck is the ultimate MacGuffin in Star Trek. It is an avenue for the producers of the show to allow the series to pretty much do anything it wants without messing with continuity. Anything they want to use it for, simulating combat, living inside literature, absolutely anything you can think of can be created in this room. It is the franchise's own 'Get-Out-Of-Jail-Free Card'.

3:47 "Growing the beard" is a trope that's basically the exact opposite of "jumping the shark", and it gets the name from Riker. He grew the beard after S1, and didn't shave it before rehearsals for S2. Gene Roddenberry said “I love the beard. It’s nautical. We’ll keep the beard, we’ll trim it down and shape it. It’ll be decorative.”
Towards the end of season 3 of DS9, Sisko grows a beard (a goatee) and between S3 and S4, he shaves his head. The show (which wasn't as plagued by bad epsidoes as early TNG was, but it did still have some doozies as it found it's feet) did get a good bit more interesting around then, and not just because Worf joins the station in S4.
EDIT: 33:05 Troi's outfit changes a lot through the show, both for in and out of universe reasons. In one epsiode in S5, things happen that make her question her career trajectory, and in an S6 double episode, the Enterprise temporarily gets a new captain, who isn't impressed with her casual dress, and she mostly sticks to a (blue) uniform after that. As an in-universe thing, she kind of decides if she really does want to go up in the ranks, she needs to present herself more formally.

Yes, Worf is a Klingon. His grandfather was the Klingon who defended Captain Kirk and Bones in their trial in Star Trek VI, played by the same actor.
Worf was born at Camp Khitomer, the colony world where the "Khitomer Accords" peace treaty was being signed at the end of Star Trek VI.
When Worf was 4 years old, Camp Khitomer was attacked by Romulans in an ambush. Almost everyone there was killed including Worf's parents. When a starfleet ship, the U.S.S. Intrepid came to the planet to try and offer any help they could, one of the personnel found little Worf alive beneath the rubble.
Worf had no other family so he took him back to Earth and he and his wife adopted him. That's why Worf's in Starfleet and not the Klingon military.
    Best Regards!

One thing to remember is that this was still the age of single episode shows, meaning most of the time the shows were made up out of single episodes that rarely had any influence at the characters. Sometimes they went back to earlier episodes and you had some recurring characters, but that was it.
Babylon 5 had one of the first, if the the first stories that were planned to span the entire run of the show. Stargate SG-1 was also mostly episodic, but developed several story arcs over it's 10 year run.
What is sad is that very few shows have tapped into the possibilities of an show-covering story. Babylon 5's first season can be a slog to watch through, but it sets up payoffs through seasons 2 to 4 that sometimes leave you stunned. As they didn't green lit Season 5 in time the creator of the show finished the overarching story in season 4. Which is the reason season 5 is still good, it doesn't reach the same heights as the seasons before. Just an example, a episode from season 1 comes back in season 3 and has an impact on several characters.
Star Trek: The next Generation is a great show in many ways, but in some parts it's a product of it's time.

This is all true, and is a reflection of the technology of the time. In 1987, VCRs were new, and there were no DVD sets or streaming services so that a viewer could catch up or see an episode they missed. Stories had to be episodic so that you didn't lose the audience.
I believe Star Trek was the first series released in its entirety on VHS, but the cost was $25 per tape ( 2 episodes per videotape). With 176 episodes, that equals $4,400.

Not sure if you noticed, but the actor who plays Klingon security guy Worf, who will eventually become more prominent with the TNG crew, was also seen in Star Trek 6 undiscovered country. The Next Generation may take place 80 years after Kirk’s movie time, but TNG aired from 1987-1994 while Star Trek movies 4-6 released from 1986-1991, so both were filming at the same time and shared a number of sets and actors. David Warner played the federation ambassador in st5, chancellor Gorkon in st6, and a romulan commander in TNG show.
Anyway, the Worf actor had already been in multiple seasons of TNG by the time he shows up in ST6 playing Kirk and McCoy’s Klingon lawyer when they are on trial for assassinating Chancellor Gorkon. “Commander Worf” is playing TNG Worf’s Grandfather 80 years before. Star Trek loves to reuse their actors in different roles and shows, and it makes for wonderful cameos.

To fill you in: Season 1 Denise Crosby felt she was not being used so they killed of Tasha Yar, but not before her and Data had a night betwwen the blankets because as he says he is "FULLY functional in all ways". Worf is moved up from background character to chief of security and weekly bean bag being tossed around. Guinnan and Picard are old friends and she is in the rest of the series on and off as his "angel on the shoulder". Gates McFadden was fired at end of season 1, so Dr. Crusher is in charage of Starfleet medical on Earth. When the producer who fired her leaves at the end of season 2, Gates is rehired and back for the rest of the franchise. The crew mets The Traveler, another god level alien but friendly, who tells Picard that Wesley is superemly special, making Enstein look like a ant, and encourages Picard to use and mentor Wesley. Makes Wesley an acting ensign. Troi has a space alien baby in season 2 opener overnight, it grows to age 10 in about 3 days and dies. Data is put on trial for his very life (season 2's Measure of a Man is considered one of the best of Star Trek's 60 years) and Picard is his defense lawyer. And the MOST IMPORTANT character, the chubby irish man at the bridge controls in the pilot becomes Transporter Chief Miles Edward O'Brien. He's in numerous episodes, leaves the show to star in Deep Space Nine, and according to Lower Decks, Chief O'Brien in the future is taught in history as being THE most important person in Star Fleet History. You’ve chosen some great episodes to watch in preparation for Generations. To give you a little information of what has occurred between Encounter and Q who:
Tasha Yar died near the end of season 1 and Worf (the Klingon) was promoted to her position as the Security Chief
Geordi LaForge (dude with the weird eye glasses) got promoted to Chief Engineer.
Wesley Crusher (the kid) saved the ship a few times and was made an Acting Ensign, meaning he could serve on the bridge.
Q returned and tried to tempt Riker to join the Q Continuum (Q’s race of quasi-god like entities) when he failed he was recalled by the rest of the Q for punishment.
Riker “grew the beard” at the start of season 2, a change in the character where he became less of a slimy, arrogant Kirk like ladies man, and matured into a more well rounded character.
Between Q Who and Best of Both Worlds there aren’t really any major shifts in the characters. They all get a little more development of course, but there’s no real changes. Only thing to note is that Sonya Gomez was only in the show for a couple of episodes (which is a shame as I really liked her character and would have loved to have seen her become a series regular) and so won’t be returning for any of the episodes that you will be watching.
I would, like others have suggested, watch “Family” also, it directly deals with the fallout of Best of Both Worlds, and I feel is pretty important for the development of Picard’s character (along side the excellent Inner Light which you have already said you are watching) in the lead up to Generations.

    @JohnTK Před rokem

12:39 Piccard (Patrick Stewart) saying the line about Starfleet giving him "a ship with children on board" isn't an insult or a metaphor of any kind, it's actually totally true. The federation in this time period some 70 (or so) years after the previous movie has been experiencing a long unprecedented period of peace. Starfleet has adopted the (honestly terrible) idea that they don't fight unless they have to (this comes back to bite them later in the series on many occasions). Most of their ships in this time are not designed to be heavy cruisers like the Constitution class was, but rather more like giant flying space hotels. The Enterprise D itself has many entertainment facilities, holodecks, and indoor gardens, as well as classrooms, daycares, lounges, and a bar. Most crewmates are encouraged to take their families with them, and as such, there is a large population of young non-starfleet passengers on the Enterprise D at almost all times. To accommodate this dramatic increase in the number of crew and passengers on board, the Enterprise D is larger than any of the ships that came before it, and is twice as big as the original Enterprise.
You could say that the main focus of the Enterprise D is luxury rather than practical or combat use. That’s why the bridge is so huge and empty, because it’s impressive.
A big sign in the show's lore that Starfleet has gotten lazy and complacent with themselves over the years is the fact that the Excelsior class of ships is still being constructed and used regularly during the time of Next Generation. They don't need to make newer ships because the old ones still work perfectly fine and there's no challenge they are facing that requires them to advance. (not saying that they DON'T make new ships, just that they use a lot of old ships in their main fleet lineup)

  • @fightscrimewhilesleeping4024

It's still a little wild to think that someone who's never before seen any TNG can already be at least somewhat familiar with "Sir Patrick", lol. When this first aired, he was only really slightly known for his stagework in the UK, and even for years after he was mostly only recognized as "the Star Trek guy". I mean, he wasn't even knighted yet, and so wasn't really "Sir Patrick" yet at all! How crazy to think how this was really the first big thing that brought him into the general pop culture, and then how long and impactful his career and presence would go on to be!
Also, while watching and reacting to a whole 7 season series is obviously daunting, after you do these and get to the films I would totally be down for you do some more "block" reactions to the show--like, not all the episodes in order, but maybe grouping based on theme or something. Like, you could watch all the remaining Q episodes, or a chunk of holodeck featured episodes, or the episodes featuring cast members from The Original Series, that sort of thing. You're already jumping around a bit with the ones you're watching now, plus these old series are still pretty episodic so continuity isn't TOO MUCH of an issue with viewing, so it could be a fun, somewhat different quirky way to get more acquainted with the series. Of course, only if that sounds like an idea that interests you after you're done with the current block and the movies.

Can't remember exact dates etc, but around season 2, Geordi (the blind guy) becomes chief engineer (hence the different colour uniform) and Worf (the Klingon) becomes head of security after Natasha Yar is killed. Picard also came to realise that Wesley Crusher (The kid) was a boy genius and allowed him to serve on the bridge, where he became the Helm officer(Hence the grey cadet's uniform, which would later be replaced with a proper Starfleet uniform). Whoopi Goldberg's character, Guinan, is an El-Aurien, a race of extremely long lived beings. We learn more about her throughout the show, including that she may be 'more than she seems' (as in far more advanced than is shown). The scene where she meets Q and they put their hands up like claws, their hands were supposed do that glowing balls of power thing to show she may even have powers on a similar level to his. but this was written out for reasons I can't recall right now.
Picard mentions children in the first episode in a literal way. The Enterprise-D was a family ship, meant as an exploratory vessel and friendly face of the Federation. Crew members were therefore allowed to bring their families aboard with them.
    Some fun facts -
    1) Gene Roddenberry didn't like Patrick Stewart as Picard. He'd always envisioned another Kirk like character, a heroic, forceful man of action and wasn't happy with the more stoic and level headed Picard.
    2) The new Enterprise-D is HUUUGE. The entire crew of around 1000 people could fit in a small part of the saucer section.
    3) The ship was capable of supporting many different atmospheres, in order to accommodate other lifeforms who may not breathe our air or live in our gravity etc. 👽👾
    4) It (like many other ships in Trek) also had dolphin crew members. They're referenced in some episodes, as well as the Technical Manual for the ship, which includes cetacean ops and recreational facilities especially for our fishy chums 🐬 (I know they're mammals :P)
NERD ALERT for this one 🤓 -
    5) The 'skis' you mention on top of the pylons on the ship are called the nacelles. Power in the ship is produced by colliding matter and anti-matter and the resulting energy is funnelled through conduits to the nacelles, where coils, made of Duranium and Madeupium produce the warp bubble that pushes the ship into subspace, allowing faster than light (warp) travel. This is highly radioactive though, hence having them mounted far away from the main body of the ship, on pylons. That's why the original Enterprise and the Excelsior had similar designs regarding this feature.
Star Trek is a rich and deep universe and I think it's a show you could really enjoy. I highly recommend giving them all (TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise) a watch. You can safely ignore Discovery and Picard as they're hyperbollocks, but Strange New Worlds seems to have set the ship right again, if you'll excuse the metaphor. 😁
Finally, it's Borg, singular. It was basically chosen as it's short for cyborg.

Really appreciate your researching by delving into TV episodes. You're the only one I know of who's done that. I hope you're looking into the Borg because that pertains to one of the movies. Good job! :)
