Techflow and ubiquity have a weird relationship
Keep up with the great videos mate, and I wish you jed and Toby and of course Atlas a very merry Christmas
Thank you!!! With you a very merry Christmas too - Jed

I was waiting for this, thanks Alex.
Keep up the great work on all your videos across all your channels
Udm was the best thing I bought this year, using it for 3 months now, it never failed in all that time still running super fast. The only thing i miss on the udm and udm pro is poe out on one or 2 ports.
Really useful video, and I finally understand VLANSs! Thanks for a great review.
Took me some time working in IT before I understood them. Then it just sort of clicks.
Just bought one of them myself. Bit disappointed by the the lack of firewall log viewing in the GUI. Really helps when tying down firewall rules.
Looks great start in Ubiquiti just don’t understand why it’s not WiFi6
ONE thing I think Unifi is missing. Day by day and by month BW usage. As the current DPI only does in total. Can always use SNMP but would be nice if they would integrate. As always love the networking videos!
Can you do a video of how you set up and what you put on your IoT Network?
Channel is fire bro!!!!!! Have you used the unified LED lights? Thinking about using them in so closets to add light.
The UDM Pro though is the rackmount model and has more features 👀 but this is still awesome! I’m only partial since I’ve been running a UDM Pro for around 4 months now 😛
To root or to rout, which route will you choose
Omg exactly 1.00 AM video posting 🔥🔥🔥
I would recommend that for the home user at best. As for the more sophisticated setup, I would either go USG-Pro or the UDM Pro.
Musta got another free product in the mail, a video was released.
Great video!
I really hope Unifi refresh the UDM for 2021 with PoE on the switch ports and Wifi 6. It would then be perfect! Having to use PoE injectors or buy a an extra PoE switch for the AP's when expanding is the only headache I've found after installing 3 of these.
Yeah I imagine it is a pain using a poe injector for multiple ap's I think ubiquitis 8 port switch has 4 POE which while isn't good to purchase another switch if you don't need to but is good for future proofing
Nice video for this rel non-techie home user.
It seems the best, most up-to-date functionality comes from a dedicated router, and the handy DSL modem-router get the features later. SO... do you have a recommendation for an inexpensive VDSL router for BT Openreach? Something small would be nice. I'm reluctant to buy this 2nd hand on eBay - who knows what you'll get? Thanks for any advice.
Is there a WIFI 6 version?
Hey TechFlow, long time viewer, first time poster here 😀. Recently I have
asked a couple of youtube users to walk us through some of the lastest
firmware changes of the UDM. Preferably not the pro version but the
normal UDM which is more geared towards home users like myself. I would
specifically like to know if users can finally configure the UDM for use
as a VPN client for, by way of example, NordVPN or another well known
VPN provider. Most have ignored this request outright. Would you be able
to step up and give us the latest and greatest rundown of the UDM as of
March 2021?
Careful folks... Those with a DSL connection will still need a modem or an existing DSL router in bridge mode to provide an Ethernet connection to the WAN port. Plus there's no POE so it might become a bit more messy than you think.
Hi Alex, any news on the ubiquiti lte 4g router coming to the UK?
Would you recommend any particular modem for a setup including the Ubiquiti dream machine? I have a BT Home Hub 6, that I could put into bridge mode. But wonder if there is a better option to go with investment into the Ubiquiti platform?
You should review the Dream Machine Pro 😊
1. All wifi routers are a router, a switch, an AP etc all in one. Nothing special about that
2. Serving wired lan to access points while under 500mgbs speed is kinda generic. Most if not all routers can do that. Making it a mesh..sure, all router makers have their own lineup to do it. Here is the real difference though: serve full gigabit routing while having different qos policies applied for each vlan while having different devices have different parental controls. Then activate guest wifi, limit download/upload speed to 2mgbs and setup an AdBlock service in the router. If you still have full gigabit NAT, call me impressed.
I like the look into UniFi but sadly just been layed off at the moment so looks like my internet work be fixed good for a while
Does it make the actual WiFi sped faster ??
If you have a separate (non Unifi) POE switch the AP still be integrated using the dream machines cloud key?
Can you change a v-land to 2.4 ghz to connect all smart devices?
Hi Alex. Will this work with my sky q setup?
I'm trying to decide between the UDM and UDM Pro ... would love to see a video that goes over the differences between the two.
One of the main ones is the inclusion of UniFi protect on the UDM pro. It’s got an hdd bay for unifi cameras. There no Wireless AP on the UDM pro. And the UDM pro has 10G SFP+ for connecting to another 10G SFP+ switch. Also 8 LAN ports on UDM pro vs UDM’s 4.
Pro doesn’t have an AP so you are looking at an extra $225 (price difference plus AP) if you want wifi. If I had a rack to put it in, I would go Pro.
what are does it cover on its own without the use of another WAP?
No PoE on the 4 ports. Massive miss there from Unifiy :(
Fishbait075 yeah was wondering this, I cba to run POE injectors for my access points so I bought everything separate alongside a USW-8 Port POE.
Huge miss
so erm,..... can I put this in a switch upstairs that's via powerline when main wifi is downstairs i just plug and play
At 7:12 you mentioned "You have a swimming pool down the other end of your house", thanks, I had completely forgot about my swimming pool, and it's lack of internet coverage.
Just a comment, I've not seen all your videos but maybe do a review of something other than Ubiquiti ? I get that there the product of your choice but there needs to be diversity, different choices
Hey Alex if you isolate your smart tech into its own VLAN/subnet how do you control it from your phone which is on the main wireless?
Inter-Vlan rules, which allow that traffic.
9:02 Dude you have a Smart Sink???
did you testet also the dream maschine pro? thanks
Wondering how this will fit in or stack up to be used with Ubiquiti CCTV?
I guess the setup is still going to need the DVR and switch attached. It’s a shame this doesn’t have a built in SSD.
unifi protect needs a separate controller (unless you're using a certain cloud key, in which case you wouldn't need this router anyway)
It’s cool but No WiFi 6 is disappointing
Jeremy Covington indeed! No point buying an expensive WiFi router right now that won’t support 6/6E
Shumon M I purchased the AMPLIFI Alien it’s the Dream Machine with WiFi 6 made by ubiquity.
Rotor rooter
Do the AP's need to be wired as well or can you connect them like a mesh or extender?
There are mesh options for the APs but wiring them is recommended. If you are going to do mesh, do ac lites, no nanoHD type devices, save the cash.
What's the recommended best router for a small house or flat please Alex?
the dream machine if you can afford it and need the fast internet. Otheerwise something where you can flash ddwrt
Just watching all your video's (mind blowingly brilliant for us Network Dummies, lol) and have just fitted Starlink (Yes watched your video's on that too!) My question is can i just plug my white Starlink Cable from Starlink POE directly into the Wan port of this Dream Machine and it will work (Whilst following the standard setup of course)??
Huge thanks and now subscribed to your channel.
Yes You can :)
Good review but not mentioning price was a bit of a miss. Considering most of Ubiquiti's products need PoE not having it on the switch ports is a big fail, especially at the price point. On the plus side, it's built in features stops you having to buy a cloudkey. I also feel you should mention that this isn't a one stop shop as you will also need switches, a bridged modem depending on internet technology you have in your premises and that you will still need either PoE switches or PoE injectors to get the extended wifi going. I personally don't do residential and can't see myself using this in a business, unless it's a small coffee shop or something like that.
most UniFi gear comes with an injector (unless it's in a multi-pack), and if you don't know that you need a modem you shouldn't be managing your own network in the first place
Hi from Germany! Great explanation and video!! You actually sound like Yungblud's brother...😉 If I throw out my Fritzbox for this guy and my Ac Ap Pros , what should I do with VoIP???
You use your Fritzbox as a client just as dect base station
Any idea if this will allow a wifi6 radio to be networked into it in the future?
It will. Ubiquity is working on Wi-Fi 6 APs right now and you can get them in the beta store when they're back in stock. This wont update the WiFi on the device itself but all of the APs with wifi 6 will.
Do you need a cable modem to connect this to?
Yes
Our WiFi in London is horrible with like 20mgbs and I want to surprise my family with this!
But I am only 12 and I am dumb😔
Watch other videos related to the Ubiquiti and networking to gradually gain knowledge.
How about their new Alien mesh with wifi 6 (also back comp.)? Should one buy that or the dreammachine?
If you want to have wifi everywhere in a big place without laying cables the Alien mesh. If you want something reliable because you're working on that internet the dream machine.
Unifi PoE injectors are only around $15-20 in the US. The dream machine is not for everyone. As he said, it’s target market is home users and small businesses. It would be fine for remote work from home offices. I’m fascinated by the product. It seems I heard somewhere that the external APs can be slaved to the DM device via wireless connection vs wired connection... Can anyone confirm or refute this? If so it makes deployment of external APs that much easier... I would not sell it to companies that have more complex needs, or whose networks expect significant growth. I love Ubiquiti and how they are making their devices cost effective and more practical for small businesses. ....my 2 cents...
Agree. It’s great for its intended use.
I’ve always been able to wirelessly connect an AP so long as Wireless Uplink is enabled in the controller. No problem. Just need to get power to the AP.
it looks a good bit of kit, probably way more than the average user would need, but you didnt say how much the thing cost, so i had a quick look, and its £300 ouch!!!
Sorry to be obtuse, but will I still need my router thing to provide wan signal into this router? Does it do poe to get that round acess point connected?
no poe. You will need a modem or a gpon but not a router.
Hey Alex, will the dream machine work well for internet speeds of 1gbps up and down? I’m looking to provide Wifi coverage for 7k sqft house and 15k sqft lot. What all components will I need to provide top notch Wifi? Every room in house is Ethernet cable prewired and all wiring comes down to a central location in closet. There are 8 PoE camera spots as well. Thanks!
The DM has 1Gbps ports so at line rate yes it will handel your internet speed, however if you enable the IPS features it will lower your throughput to 850mbps. Its impossible to determine what you woukd need to set up wifi at your house as there are a lot if factors such as obstructions, building materials, users, ect.. you are going to have to evaluate your environment and compare the specs of the APs Ubiquiti offers.
Is unify controller also build in or do i need a separate one.
It's built in.
Hi. I'm kinda new to these things. Question: why would you set your smart devices on a separate network? As you cannot control them from, say, your iphone, that is on your other network. Am I missing something?
you separate them because some smart devices may use slower wifi like 802.11b which if it was enabled on the wifi network that your PS4 is on it would slow it down. so you put them on a different wifi network that supports .11b.
You can have separate sub-networks and VLANS, and simply route traffic so that you are still able to control the smart devices from a separate sub-network. This is the sort of networking that doesn’t come up in most home networks and even small businesses. Different types of network traffic should be isolated from one another. Otherwise, a single device on your subnet can take down the entire subnet.
Please do a comparison with Amplifi Alien!!
How is this as stand alone after passing VM SH3? Have placed cables where AP's will be but for time looking just to replace VM 💩
Your videos are great! Why don't you pronounce the word router the way you normally would, instead of pronouncing it twice?
POE provided? How would run your access point from the dream machine (separate power supply)?
They need to make a POE version.
It would make a mess, if you set it up with external POE injectors
No poe, yes external separate power injector
Tom/@@Richard_GIS I agree, that's why I thought POE would be important especially if you've to use access points.
Is the Unifi Controller in this Router accessible remotely ?
No - that's not its target market.
What is a rooter??
No WiFi 6 ?
If you put your smart devices on a different vlan how do you actually control them?
Firewall rules - you let the non-IoT network initiate connections, not the other way around.
Travis Newton Correct. I wouldn’t expect home users to understand that level of networking. It’s really beyond the single subnet design of home networks. But it’s the cool part of business network gear...you can control the traffic.
One thing I’d like to know is can you add content filters too it? I do like ubiquiti though just wondered how this compares to draytek as they have a similar price tag.
Draytek hardware seems to be more versatile, but more complicated to set up.
@@jamescollins6085 I've worked a bit with draytek routers (but not with the unifi stuff) and straight away I'd say draytek isn't for the average person. You really need to know exactly what you're doing to get it to do what you want. I'd 100% go for the Unifi equipment any day as it looks a whole lot nicer (both the hardware and the software that it all runs) and is able to sort itself out with QoS and all the good stuff we all want but don't necessarily want to have to set up from scratch.
@@supremeicecreme1658 Sorry for any confusion, I was thinking of Mikrotik instead for some reason. Probably the similar name.
Ok so no one knows then lol and I can’t find on ubiquiti wether it can. Draytek is easy when you know how, but I agree UniFi is a breeze.
@@JoypadNinja what are you looking to do? Removing access to certain pages? That sounds like something you'd definitely be able to do on Unifi
I like the idea of it but £300 its way out of my price range ya need to look or do i video for abit cheaper wireless routers
We completely understand! We will try and find a cheaper alternative 💪🏻
I would say some of there devices are expensive, but do have some great features, for the price they should do
@@techflow thank you for replying back i am always looking for ideas has my house is full of tech especially when i have 3 kids plus 4 xboxs mobile phones laptops tablets house pc the list is endless lol and i am struggling with the wifi router i have so all the help i can learn or get is very much appreciated and on a budget too
@@robharrison1252 to be honest you wont get anything cheaper to be as reliable. In my workplace we have like alot of wireless devices that should be connected to the network simultaneously and interact with each other without ANY issues. One of these round acess points is doing all the work day after day with literally 0 issues. They even cut the staff in IT department when that stuff was installed. I dunno about the router thingy(that's why i watch this) but that ibiquty stuff is worth every penny if you got alot of users and want just a peace of mind. Thats what i learned about that stuff. I am no it person.
I'd be all over this if it was WiFi 6. I'm just not going to send any more money on AC access points at this point. Ubiquiti needs to get with the program.
They just launched the AmpliFi Alien that is a wifi 6 mesh system
The only router I will ever need is my PfSense box. Thanks anyway. 👍
What is you have a DSL or ADSL connection for internet... i dont see a dsl port on there?
For that you'd have to use your ISP's modem/router to get started off. You need to put your ISP provided hardware into modem mode (if it has one) from the web interface (details will be printed on the unit for how to access it). You then connect a cable between the Dream Machine and your ISP router I assume.
Supreme Icecreme aaah ok thanks... ive always wondered about rhat
can you add a unifi switch 8 port to this and if so is that just from one of the LAN?
sure, you can
@@LegionInfanterie cheers
I think it's the only router most houses will ever need, but I'll stick to my 3 APs and separate router :-)
Lol my house will need APs, access level switches, aggregation switches, core switches and gateway routers with WAN failover.
Does the UDM provide POE as the access points require them or will I need to use a POE adapter if I have multiple POE devices won't they take up a plug socket each?
POE injector will be required
Where did you buy it? Can't seem to find it for sale anywhere in UK.🤷♂️
5O7D13RStudios Doesn’t appear to be on UK Amazon. 🤷🏻♂️
eu.store.ui.com/collections/routing-switching/products/unifi-dream-machine
Its in Europe but available this is where Alex most likely purchased it from. 😃
Alex, why are you so excited for this? Any router has a router, switch and access point. As far as I know, you don't need a controller for a single ubnt AP, so you wouldn't need much of a controller, and you could run one in a VM if you wanted to. Next, VLANs. I'm sure any recent router with either stock or custom firmwares can do VLANs, both over wireless and wired. If anything have different SSIDs to have them on different vlans. (wl0.1, wl0.2 for the second 2.4ghz ssid/vlan. Same goes for wl1.1 and wl1.2 but for 5ghz.) DPI: My asus router from 2014 has traffic inspection and it provides pretty much all of what the DPI on here does, with the typical limitation of https. Speed test, speedtest-cli exists, and I grabbed a TP link archer a2300 for my grandma a while back which has a built in speedtest application. I'm pretty sure you can do the same with the asus counterpart and anything custom firmware. For most networks you're not going to need to adopt APs everyday, so I am pretty sure you can setup a new router (which I grabbed a 1200 (867 + 300) wireless router for my grandma. Disabled DHCP, and used the LAN port to have it as an AP. Works like a charm and I paid about $50 for the whole setup. No fancy GUI for the most part though her TP link handles it all for 1/8th the price. It doesn't look AMAZING but it's all hidden away anyways, I am a WISP and I provide her internet access and this is how I usually do setups to cut costs. I can't see why I'd spend $400 on a router for the average person who would be fine with probably a N router topping out at a theoretical 300 mbps.
Without a controller you can't control the router and get all the fancy features
Hi Alex I have a older 3 bedroom house with conservatory i have virgin hub 3 at 100meg down stairs in lounge/ dining room and the WiFi is very band in the conservatory about 20 feet away, what product wood you suggest, l don't do gaming I'm retired but won't a good fast WiFi with out running cable's all-round the house can you help
Wayne Brown any mesh network
Yeah any mesh with Ethernet backhaul
Have added Google nest router and WiFi exstender and seems to be working fantastic I can even go to bottom of garden thanks for your help
Do I need to buy unifi cloud key if I already have unifi UDM devicer?
No the cloud key is build in to the udm
@@tedleer9296 thanks
What is the difference between this and the amplifi HD, I have a 3 bed 3 floor house and I want stronger reliable wifi for the whole house. I currently get on average 300 up 40 down
Alexander Yeo This is more than just a router/access point. Hence why it’s so expensive. Whether you get the amplifiHD or this one, you’re likely going to need an additional access point in your home due to it being 3 floors.
@@RespectfullyCurious Thank you for your response. I actually tried the amplifiHD and it didn't sort out my issue, If anything it made my speeds slower but increased the range somewhat. If I purchased this would I then be able to receive my advertised wifi speeds throughout the house if I connected an extra ubiquiti mesh point?
@@MrAlexy90 there's a few variables at play when it comes to networking. You can buy the best router in the world, and still not receive advertised speeds. For example, you first have to make sure that you're getting the advertised speeds at all, I would recommend setting up a wired connection to your modem/router and checking the speeds that way. For example, if you're paying for 200mbps down, and you're getting close to it, then it's a wireless issue and if you're getting no where close to the advertised speed when wired, then the issue is either the modem/router or your ISP is just not getting you advertised speeds due to infrastructure issues on their end. So first check that. If you figured out that it is a wifi issue, then again there's still a few variables at play. It could be your router is getting you the speeds you are paying for but there may be some interference or too many devices on the network or range is not good enough. My example: When I used to live in a building in college, we were paying for 100mbps down, and we got 100mbps down via ethernet but on wireless we barely got 10mbps tops. Issue was that literally every unit had their own router and the signal interference was messing with our speeds big time. we had to start broadcasting on different channels in order to get better speeds.
@@RespectfullyCurious I have been frequently checking the wifi and ethernet speeds and I can on occasion get my advertised speeds on wifi if I am standing right next to my router, also certain times of the day come into effect. The router is on the middle floor and the downstairs part where my bedroom is just doesn't get anywhere near those speeds, it's around half at best.
You should do a collab with LTT
Can you add additional APs via wireless (rather than wired) to create a mesh network?
Yes, they do have a 4x4 AC Wave 2 that plugs into a wall outlet but takes up both outlets. The model number is UAP-BeaconHD
Yes, you can connect an AP over a wire or wireless. I’ve done both. If wireless, the AP will connect you another AP to get its uplink.
Almost! I really need a router with a VPN CLIENT!
Buy raspberry pi and setup open vpn server ;)
@@ukasz2901 I'm looking for a router with a built-in VPN CLIENT, not a server.
Is unfi dream machine a usg?
It’s more an all-in-one device made for small place. See it as a Unify controller + USG + a 4 ports non-POE SWITCH + a small Acces Point. It contains the USG functions if it’s what you ask.
Can this be paired with a Virgin hub 3 router? Sorry for this may be a silly question. Not very educated on this kind of stuff.
Yup. Should be just an ethernet cable between the two. Put the hub 3 in modem mode and you're good to go.
did you get it to work
For my house upstairs 5ghz repeater is good because it gets the full speed 60 mbps and for 2ghz is 30 mbps
I was going to with Ubiquiti as I was wanting CCTV too. But I found they seem to be struggling with stock, and they didn’t bother with any Bkack Friday deals. Went for Reolink for the cameras instead.
How are the Reolink cameras? Thinking of getting a few.
LukeHawker I’ll know by Monday as just fitting them. Saw review by Lifehackster and they look good. Will let you know 👍🏼
@@tonybedford3429 Reolink are recommended by us!
LukeHawker Got the Reolink cameras set up today. Very impressed 👍🏼 Got 4 x 4k bullets and 1 x 5mp PTZ.
Soo... basically a google WiFi hub, but a little more features?
Main difference is you can expand this to include managed switches and APs
I don't agree... there does not seem to be ways to control internet access by devices mac adresses or group of device... that smaller dream machine models is probably more aim at residential but lack the parental control over kid's devices...
Thank you for that bit of info as I really do want granular control over kid's devices. But it appears you can control groups by just creating a VLAN as the video described.
@@HoppyPilsner You can the devices appear on the web app and you can assign them to VLANS which have set rules such as no gambling or phishy sites
Do you pay for 300mbps broadband with BT?
Check gigaclear cheaper and better I get gigabit broadband at mine think I pay 60 a month
I live in Birmingham, we wont have gigabit speed internet until at least the beginning of 2021, later 2020
‘Should you buy it’ but you don’t include the price, seems a little crazy as this is probably the biggest defining factor on whether people will buy it or not!

Would you recommend someone getting this if they have a 3 bedroom house and 2 kids
I would, I have bought the separate stuff, key, switch, usg, this stuff just works, day in day out. It's super fast and means my mac and photos from all devices get backed up to a NAS too. Brilliantly designed stuff. What he didn't say as clearly was the way that it manages the wireless devices, you get very fast connections speeds and most of the fancy routers out there can not even rival the throughput to this stuff.
@@chriswashington7964 will give it a try kids are just getting too much of there grandparents that connect to the Internet
Get WiFi 6 or wireless 802.11AX. That is the new standard. This is a few years behind.
@@TheHoff4K not really usefull when the rest of the network is not capabel of handeling wifi6 ;)
Timber land why would you say that? All new high end cell phones have WIFI6. And you are ready for any more devices then! Why spend this much money on older WIFI6. Even more so because WIFI6 is not just faster speeds but can handle more devices connected to it.
It’s not WiFi 6 (Wireless AX) so don’t bother no matter the other features!

Sorry, can't agree. While I concede the possibility of use in a small office or at home, there is no way this should be used in a medium business, especially if they went full UniFi. There are IPsec site-to-site VPNs tu consider! A medium sized business can have dozens of remote offices. While this is more powerful than standard USG, I donť see this handling access from like fourty simultaneous remote sites.
Let's say an European medium business (50-100 people?)
@@ddavidebor No, not even there. The reason is, that there are comparable choices with better performance out there. That is my first objection to this. The second is how big turnabout such a company has? They can afford a grade or two more powerful machines thus futureproofing themselves. At this point, you can go for USG-PRO, you don't need media converters, if your provider delivers Internet access through fiber, and it isn't ARM processor. Though powerfull on the paper, they don't compare that well in real life. If I were you, I would go with higher end EdgeRouter for the main office, EdgeRouter X for remote sites and I would only touch UniFi gateways and switches, when I had to doploy highly isolated small site with a simplistic setup and I would have my own controller at company HQ,.This is the main problem, why I wouldn't go with Dream Machine. Can't adopt it in to external controller and it can't run multiple sites, which a medium sized company of a hundred people is likely to do. Now, if these options were avaliable, then my assement would have to be revised for remote sites in general.
@@looseycanonPerformance is not everything. Anyway, there is a Dream Machine pro coming up, it's in early access.
@@ddavidebor Well, it's better to have it than not... I'm also wondering, what DM pro will be like. However, if multisite and adoptability in to other controllers remains as with classic, it's still a no go.
This is for SoHo. Let’s keep that in perspective. This thing couldn’t handle a ton of routing and inter VLAN routing. It’s probably great for its intended purpose of small networks.
will I still be able to join my local Minecraft server :0
I have a deadsport on the first floor in the kitchen downstairs and my brother on the 3rd floor doesn't always get the best speeds. Can someone please recommend what i shall do? I have virgin internet and get roughly 300 down 60 upload, what shall i do to make my whole house accessible to wifi? Do i take pressure off the router? Or do i need a new router? Or a wifi ectender downstairs? Please help me thanks.
mesh wifi router would work for you. 2 Mesh APs should be sufficient i think.
Why are you installing APs in people's closets and cubbies? Ever hear of attenuation?
Thought the same thing. Also should be horizontally mounted for best spreading.
