    I really hope Unifi refresh the UDM for 2021 with PoE on the switch ports and Wifi 6. It would then be perfect! Having to use PoE injectors or buy a an extra PoE switch for the AP's when expanding is the only headache I've found after installing 3 of these.

    It seems the best, most up-to-date functionality comes from a dedicated router, and the handy DSL modem-router get the features later. SO... do you have a recommendation for an inexpensive VDSL router for BT Openreach? Something small would be nice. I'm reluctant to buy this 2nd hand on eBay - who knows what you'll get? Thanks for any advice.

    Hey TechFlow, long time viewer, first time poster here 😀. Recently I have
    asked a couple of youtube users to walk us through some of the lastest
    firmware changes of the UDM. Preferably not the pro version but the
    normal UDM which is more geared towards home users like myself. I would
    specifically like to know if users can finally configure the UDM for use
    as a VPN client for, by way of example, NordVPN or another well known
    VPN provider. Most have ignored this request outright. Would you be able
    to step up and give us the latest and greatest rundown of the UDM as of
    March 2021?

  • @TechFromYorkshire

    Careful folks... Those with a DSL connection will still need a modem or an existing DSL router in bridge mode to provide an Ethernet connection to the WAN port. Plus there's no POE so it might become a bit more messy than you think.

    1. All wifi routers are a router, a switch, an AP etc all in one. Nothing special about that
    2. Serving wired lan to access points while under 500mgbs speed is kinda generic. Most if not all routers can do that. Making it a mesh..sure, all router makers have their own lineup to do it. Here is the real difference though: serve full gigabit routing while having different qos policies applied for each vlan while having different devices have different parental controls. Then activate guest wifi, limit download/upload speed to 2mgbs and setup an AdBlock service in the router. If you still have full gigabit NAT, call me impressed.

      One of the main ones is the inclusion of UniFi protect on the UDM pro. It’s got an hdd bay for unifi cameras. There no Wireless AP on the UDM pro. And the UDM pro has 10G SFP+ for connecting to another 10G SFP+ switch. Also 8 LAN ports on UDM pro vs UDM’s 4.

  • @datalinq
    @datalinq Před 4 lety +2

    Good review but not mentioning price was a bit of a miss. Considering most of Ubiquiti's products need PoE not having it on the switch ports is a big fail, especially at the price point. On the plus side, it's built in features stops you having to buy a cloudkey. I also feel you should mention that this isn't a one stop shop as you will also need switches, a bridged modem depending on internet technology you have in your premises and that you will still need either PoE switches or PoE injectors to get the extended wifi going. I personally don't do residential and can't see myself using this in a business, unless it's a small coffee shop or something like that.

    • @dubya13207

    Unifi PoE injectors are only around $15-20 in the US. The dream machine is not for everyone. As he said, it’s target market is home users and small businesses. It would be fine for remote work from home offices. I’m fascinated by the product. It seems I heard somewhere that the external APs can be slaved to the DM device via wireless connection vs wired connection... Can anyone confirm or refute this? If so it makes deployment of external APs that much easier... I would not sell it to companies that have more complex needs, or whose networks expect significant growth. I love Ubiquiti and how they are making their devices cost effective and more practical for small businesses. ....my 2 cents...

    • @jmhm17
      @jmhm17 Před 4 lety

      The DM has 1Gbps ports so at line rate yes it will handel your internet speed, however if you enable the IPS features it will lower your throughput to 850mbps. Its impossible to determine what you woukd need to set up wifi at your house as there are a lot if factors such as obstructions, building materials, users, ect.. you are going to have to evaluate your environment and compare the specs of the APs Ubiquiti offers.

    Hi. I'm kinda new to these things. Question: why would you set your smart devices on a separate network? As you cannot control them from, say, your iphone, that is on your other network. Am I missing something?

    • @bayardo
      @bayardo Před 4 lety +1

      you separate them because some smart devices may use slower wifi like 802.11b which if it was enabled on the wifi network that your PS4 is on it would slow it down. so you put them on a different wifi network that supports .11b.

    • @scottluebke5012
      @scottluebke5012 Před 4 lety +1

      You can have separate sub-networks and VLANS, and simply route traffic so that you are still able to control the smart devices from a separate sub-network. This is the sort of networking that doesn’t come up in most home networks and even small businesses. Different types of network traffic should be isolated from one another. Otherwise, a single device on your subnet can take down the entire subnet.

      For that you'd have to use your ISP's modem/router to get started off. You need to put your ISP provided hardware into modem mode (if it has one) from the web interface (details will be printed on the unit for how to access it). You then connect a cable between the Dream Machine and your ISP router I assume.

    Alex, why are you so excited for this? Any router has a router, switch and access point. As far as I know, you don't need a controller for a single ubnt AP, so you wouldn't need much of a controller, and you could run one in a VM if you wanted to. Next, VLANs. I'm sure any recent router with either stock or custom firmwares can do VLANs, both over wireless and wired. If anything have different SSIDs to have them on different vlans. (wl0.1, wl0.2 for the second 2.4ghz ssid/vlan. Same goes for wl1.1 and wl1.2 but for 5ghz.) DPI: My asus router from 2014 has traffic inspection and it provides pretty much all of what the DPI on here does, with the typical limitation of https. Speed test, speedtest-cli exists, and I grabbed a TP link archer a2300 for my grandma a while back which has a built in speedtest application. I'm pretty sure you can do the same with the asus counterpart and anything custom firmware. For most networks you're not going to need to adopt APs everyday, so I am pretty sure you can setup a new router (which I grabbed a 1200 (867 + 300) wireless router for my grandma. Disabled DHCP, and used the LAN port to have it as an AP. Works like a charm and I paid about $50 for the whole setup. No fancy GUI for the most part though her TP link handles it all for 1/8th the price. It doesn't look AMAZING but it's all hidden away anyways, I am a WISP and I provide her internet access and this is how I usually do setups to cut costs. I can't see why I'd spend $400 on a router for the average person who would be fine with probably a N router topping out at a theoretical 300 mbps.

      @RespectfullyCurious Před 4 lety +1

      Alexander Yeo This is more than just a router/access point. Hence why it’s so expensive. Whether you get the amplifiHD or this one, you’re likely going to need an additional access point in your home due to it being 3 floors.

      @@RespectfullyCurious Thank you for your response. I actually tried the amplifiHD and it didn't sort out my issue, If anything it made my speeds slower but increased the range somewhat. • @RespectfullyCurious
      @RespectfullyCurious Před 4 lety

      @@MrAlexy90 there's a few variables at play when it comes to networking. You can buy the best router in the world, and still not receive advertised speeds. For example, you first have to make sure that you're getting the advertised speeds at all, I would recommend setting up a wired connection to your modem/router and checking the speeds that way. For example, if you're paying for 200mbps down, and you're getting close to it, then it's a wireless issue and if you're getting no where close to the advertised speed when wired, then the issue is either the modem/router or your ISP is just not getting you advertised speeds due to infrastructure issues on their end. So first check that. If you figured out that it is a wifi issue, then again there's still a few variables at play. It could be your router is getting you the speeds you are paying for but there may be some interference or too many devices on the network or range is not good enough. My example: When I used to live in a building in college, we were paying for 100mbps down, and we got 100mbps down via ethernet but on wireless we barely got 10mbps tops. Issue was that literally every unit had their own router and the signal interference was messing with our speeds big time. we had to start broadcasting on different channels in order to get better speeds.

    • @MrAlexy90
      @MrAlexy90 Před 4 lety

      @@RespectfullyCurious I have been frequently checking the wifi and ethernet speeds and I can on occasion get my advertised speeds on wifi if I am standing right next to my router, also certain times of the day come into effect. The second is how big turnabout such a company has? They can afford a grade or two more powerful machines thus futureproofing themselves. At this point, you can go for USG-PRO, you don't need media converters, if your provider delivers Internet access through fiber, and it isn't ARM processor. Though powerfull on the paper, they don't compare that well in real life. If I were you, I would go with higher end EdgeRouter for the main office, EdgeRouter X for remote sites and I would only touch UniFi gateways and switches, when I had to doploy highly isolated small site with a simplistic setup and I would have my own controller at company HQ,.This is the main problem, why I wouldn't go with Dream Machine. Can't adopt it in to external controller and it can't run multiple sites, which a medium sized company of a hundred people is likely to do.
