Music director Khayyam (1927-2019) achieved the impossible when he quietly inserted a sizable dose of the arcane but hauntingly beautiful raag Gaud Sa Rang (Din Ki Bihag) into his creation for Umrao Jaan (1981)- Zindagi Jab Bhi Tere Bazm Me...
The song was an instant hit and has endured for over 40 years - also helped by the pen of Shahryar and voice of Talat Aziz.
Gaud Sarang remains a front ranking member of the "League of Anonymous Ragas".. heard and loved by billions ...blissfully unaware that their favourite song is powered by one of these league members. Its influence even extends to the Indian National Anthem.
