    Some tips from my experience, when I was first getting my turtle, I was on a super budget, I was trying to save as much money as possible. DO NOT DO THIS, I REPEAT DO NOT DO THIS. Buy the best filter you can afford, usually a good canister filter. Don't be cheap and buy a small filter, I bought a Fluval U3 Internal Filter for my 29 Gallon Musk Turtle Tank. Oml it didn't work, it was working for about 7 months but now it still works but I can't pull the bottom off and maintaining the filter is really hard. If I would've bought a bigger filter/canister I wouldn't be in this situation. Hope this helps you!

      Trying to maintain a 29gal turtle tank is equivalent to a part time job.I bought a turtle in a plastic container. It was the size of a half dollar. In six months, it grew to the size of a large avocado. Then reluctantly, I accepted a 2nd turtle
      from my coworker.it was similar in size. For a year it was like Little Shop of Horrors. Feed me Seymour! Turtles are gluttonous and insatiable. The bio load was ridiculous. I finally got fed up and released them into a local reservoir. They're probably big as a watermelon now!

      Omfg I wish we had known this! We got a baby Chinese golden thread turtle in 2010. She was teeny tiny at first and we got a flimsy little filter, because that’s all we thought we needed at the time...rookie mistake! 11-years later she’s a big lady and her poop reflects her size.
      We have spent a disgusting amount of money on filters over the years. Back and forth between fluvals and ehiems. We have finally found a good balance for our 150 gallon tank with a Fluval A219 canister filter. It was a good chunk of change, but it has been worth every penny! Do not cheap out!

    Please help me on this question... Does a turtle tank filtration system require activated carbon? I removed it for 1 week because my little one got sick and was pouring some medication in the tank.. made my water cloudy and whiteish... after the 8th day the water got super clear. Is activated carbon a mandatory/crucial media in the filtration system?

    • @TheTurtleGirl
      @TheTurtleGirl  Před 3 lety +1

      The carbon is for chemical filtration, which I didn't really talk about in this video. I wouldn't say it's absolutely crucial, but it's more for a specific purpose, such as removing medications or other chemicals from the water. It doesn't hurt anything to include it, honestly, so I'd say do some research and figure out if it's beneficial to you or not.

    Hi Turtle Girl: Greetings from southern California and thanks for producing this informative video. My wife has two large adult red ear sliders living in a 100 gallon aquarium filled with water at approximately 70%. The combination of uneaten food and turtle waste has practically destroyed the two canister filters installed: Rena XP4 and Rena XP3 with combined output rating of 800 gph. I know they're not putting out these amounts evident by the low flow they produce, even after recent cleaning. I'm proposing to replace these filters with an Eheim 1262 canister, rated at 900 gph. I have one of these filtering my 180 gallon community fish aquarium. I like this style of canister as it doesn't use baskets like most canister filters. It operates more like a five gallon bucket with a motor on top, allowing more versatility and less restrictive on how to arrange filter media. I'm hoping this Eheim will withstand the rigors of filtering a turtle tank. Is this idea overkill? Can you suggest other canister filter options? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

    I think the most challenging thing in filtering a turtle tank is how to make their actual poop sucked by the intake. As we all know, turtle poop is more solid and heavier than fish poop so it is harder to get blown away from the current. Adding a wave maker can be a solution, but even then it could add another problem (too much flow for the turtle) and it doesn't work all the time.

She is not eating for about 25 days as of today. At initial days she was sick with maybe respiratory infections and stopped eating. I fed her antibiotics for 5 days (two times). She recovered but not eating entirely. I tried force-feeding but she resists too hard and put back the food pellet/any food from her mouth. She sleeps all the time. I put her in warm water for 30 minutes twice a day, so she gets hydrated.

      I'd say the fx4 would already be pushing it. Like I said, the biggest concern is the flow rate. However, it is adjustable on the fx series filters, so you could do an fx4 and turn down the flow a bit. I think a fx6 would be overkill unless you wanted to get it so that it could go with a bigger tank as the turtle gets bigger.

      Hello, I'm a turtle owner since 2019 so I have quite a bit of knowledge on them.
      First of all, to be sure, set a camera up when you've given food then you can find out if they eat.
      Second of all, If they don't eat, its most likely the temperature and if you didn't already, make a basking area, and get some UV lights (with or without Heating feature) to let them get calcium, vitamin D and stuff.(Please research and find out more bout Basking area and UV lights for your species of turtles) (As they can't make calcium themselves)
      Third of all, get an Heat Bulb for turtles or if u got an UV lights which has an Heating feature, Low or make it high based on the temperature of the water your turtle is living in. (You can find out about the temperature the species of your turtle lives in.
      Fourth of all, If your turtle is Small or high depending on the age, make sure they have a huge space to swim and a place they can dry off (basking area). Make sure to clean the space they are living in every 2-3 weeks (the filter too)
      Fifth of all, Get a dechlorinator for the water you are using, Always use tap water. Do not use purified water as they have added chemicals, after filling the turtle tank, do not put your turtle in. Use the dechlorinator with the recommended drops in the back of the package then leave the tank for 24 hours. Then you can put him in. You can find dechlorinator online.
      Sixth of all, make sure your turtle has a healthy diet, no over dosing and have an weakly treats for him other than pellets, you can search online the food they like to eat.
      Seventh of all, I'm not an expert, I told everything I know, please research more and If nothing works, its best to take your turtle to the veternarian.
      Please reply so I know that you've read this.

    I think I am a victim of what you state in this video and I am stuck. I have a 75 gallon tank with 4 red eared sliders in different sizes. I have had them for four years and two years. I have a Fluval FX6 400 gallon filter canister only because this aquarium cleaner told me to get it but this tank is still foggy at times and I want it clear or am I asking for too much? What can I do to change this? I wish I could show you a video or a picture of my ninja turtles.

    • @TheTurtleGirl
      @TheTurtleGirl  Před 3 lety

      With that many turtles it might be difficult...because the bioload increases with each turtle. Do you change water regularly? Also, feeding them in separate containers could cut down on the waste from the leftover food in the tank.

    • @RioCahyadiDrayka
      @RioCahyadiDrayka Před 3 lety

      Turtle in captivity can live their entire life only on pellet. Yeah some variety and treat is good (and recommended), but eating just a good quality pellet for it's entire life is also fine.

    • @TheTurtleGirl
      @TheTurtleGirl  Před 3 lety

      They can certainly survive on only pellets, but it's good to provide variety of pellets, and also other foods as occasional treats.

    I wanted a recommendation. I have 2 turtles in one tank. One is around 1 and half years old and the other is half an year old. But the bigger one tries to bite the smaller when he gets close. The both stay in the opposite corners My older turtle is kind of slow, and the younger is kind of fast. I don't know if he moving around a lot troubles him or I don't know. Please tell me what to do. And, I don't want to get a new tank
    EDIT: My tank is a 20 gallon HIGH

    • @TheTurtleGirl
      @TheTurtleGirl  Před 3 lety

      That's a bit of a tough situation. If they are demonstrating aggression, it's important to to separate them or give them more space. If a bigger or separate tank isn't an option, you might have to either put a physical divider in the tank (which isn't ideal since it reduces swimming space) or rehome one of them. Is the aggression mostly just at certain time? Like during feeding?

    Can’t you just use surface plants plus mechanical filtration

    • @TheTurtleGirl
      @TheTurtleGirl  Před 3 lety

      Yes. The plants can help process the bioload of the turtle. But mechanical filtration and biological filtration kind of go hand in hand, it's not like you can eliminate one or the other (since the beneficial bacteria will be growing anywhere there is surface area). But plants can reduce the need for water changes by using up the nitrates in the tank!
