    I went into this vault blind, BEFORE activating any quests, because I'm a curious little sot who roves the Wasteland looking for adventure. I sure found one here! I went inside, and thought. "Ooo! A Vault! If anywhere has an adventure waiting, it'd be here!" I walked inside, confused by its verdant nature. And ran into my first Spore Carrier, which was very much difficult for me to put down with my trusty general-use rifle and gave no warning it was there before it jumped me (If I did know it was there, it would have been a different story, I play a sniper build usually and if I see it first it's usually dead before it has a chance to see me at all, except, of course. F**king Cazadores and tougher Deathclaw variants.). I did survive and killed it, Stimmed up, and said. "Alright, it's gonna be one of THOSE, innit? Welp, better go get the right equipment." I turned around on the spot and left. Walked all the way back to my home base in the Abandoned BOS Bunker. Got my own fully modded and upgraded flamethrower out, and all the flamer fuel I had, and came back. I walked through that plant-infested hellhole toasting every patch of plants I saw until I was satisfied that anything dangerous to me within was charcoal, humming a merry tune all the while. Not a single spore carrier took me by surprise again, due to being on fire before I knew they were there and thus announcing their presence politely by burning and dying.
    Do you think I'm jaded from my travels?

    Plants only use purple parts of light and reflect green. That's why they are green. So if you shine purple lights on them, you give them all the energy they need without wasting energy on other wavelengths. It's normal practice irl and I bet most vaults used purple lights to grow their food.

    I study plant biology and means of pest control as a consequence and I have to say that Vault-tec's idea to use these spores as pest control isn't that far fetched or odd and in actuality the chance an organism changes its host (from pest of choice to human) is extremely small, especially if it was designed for roaches the events of vault 22 were just a series of extremely unfortunate events (rodents are more closely related to us making the host change a whole lot easier). What is however problematic is Vault-tec's utter lack of safety procedures. No research lab in this world would be allowed to work with a potentially dangerous airborne disease like that in a setting where said disease could get into the air conditioning system. In short what I'm trying to say is that Vault 22 fell not to their "inhumane" experiments but a serious lack of understanding as to why safety procedures are a thing.

    • @mikoto7693
      @mikoto7693 Před 7 lety +74

      That's pretty much what I thought watching this video, of course I'm a biologist too so I was just shaking my head. Safety and containment procedures are a thing for good reason. During my student years we were making glow-in-the-dark ecoli on petri dishes and there were strict safety protocols we had to follow. The stuff wasn't even dangerous, its just no chances were taken that this glowing e.coli would escape into the wild. Working on a potentially dangerous airbourne disease would call for crazy amounts of safety and containment procedures. Silly Vault Tec. A little more safety and a lot less recklessness would have made this Vault successful.

    • @peace.keeper2800
      @peace.keeper2800 Před 7 lety +66

      Well it's Vault-Tec, so I wouldn't be surprised if they ignored the safety procedures just for that to happen. I mean, in the end, Vault-Tec never really cared about the well being of the people that live in their vaults.

    • @benallmon5613
      @benallmon5613 Před 6 lety +16

      Well maybe in this world, they weren't smart enough to think that far ahead. Something I have learned about Vault Tec is they never thought of the worst. They seem to rarely put up safety measures and only think their experiments will work and have no chance to fail.
      Also, the whole point of this vault could have been to see what happens when a contagion is released in the air vents. How effective could it be? Just a couple thoughts

    • @Bluesit32
      @Bluesit32 Před 6 lety +17

      Teineeva Well, the problem is that the spores were genetically altered. Vault Tec sounds like people that play fast and loose with science. Experiment first, consider consequences later. They probably wanted to include rats among the "pests" that were targeted. If it can infect insects and rodents, going to humans isn't too outlandish, especially since Vault Tec either didn't have time to test just how many types of mammals this stuff worked on or they never even considered it. I mean, this is the same company that experimented with FEV. Anything with the words "*forced* evolution" in it is a bad idea. "CONTROLLED Evolution" would be a much better concept.

    For anyone curious (if anyone *is* curious), the Beauveria genus of fungus is a real thing -- while the specific species mentioned doesn't actually exist, the fungus does genuinely infect insects, killing them and turning them into walking colonies of fungal spores to infect others, thereby spreading the parasite; it's even used as a biological pesticide in some places, and is being researched as a possible countermeasure to kill bedbugs and mosquitoes. (Lovely thought, right?)
    And for those well-read in video game parasites, who assume it's similar to the Cordyceps fungus of The Last Of Us fame -- you're partly right. Beauveria fungi are *like* Cordyceps, except they reproduce asexually, meaning they can spread like wildfire once they latch onto a food source... in other words, Naughty Dog picked the *nice* parasitic zombie brain-fungus for their post-apocalyptic road trip. (Again: lovely thought, right?)

    9:42- vault 22 is an obvious reference to the Carboniferous period (lasting roughly 359 to 299 million years ago) where there was an overabundance of oxygen, which allowed arthropods to grow to gigantic sizes. Hence why the mantises are so large- the plants created more oxygen.
    The Carboniferous period is also known for its lush and vast (perhaps planet-wide) forests and swamps, from which we get much of the coal we burn for energy today.

      Mutah it's not simple but there is something else to consider: the Followers of the Apocalypse both wants to improve the future and don't want humans to forget their past failures, deleting the information on the Vault terminal is just erasing a failure and has a better chance of that failure being repeated. Allowing the research day to be reproduced might risk it happening again but out of the hands of the Insidious vault-tec there's less of a chance of a catastrophic experiment. It's best to save the data and let people learn from mistakes instead of trying to forget mistakes happened and destroying a lot of potentially good research.

    * The room with the data backup is secure, if you close the door, it is close enough to the vent that you can lob a grenade or dynamite around the corner.
    * You can place a C4 device, then run back to the elevator, use the detonator, then immediately hit the elevator. You should have time to take off before the fireball reaches you.

    That's what kinda put me off about Fallout 4, The Vaults are lame compared to new vegas. I can go delving into new vegas Vaults and find a massive underground structure that feels like it goes on forever while I can just run through vaults in Fallout 4 like nothing lol.
    speaking of vaults, Oxhorn you should do Vault 11 next!!! that vault is pretty interesting I'm sure you'd like it.

      Molokai Bean Well, there aren't as many vaults (or at least absolutely crazy ones) in 4, and they didn't just want to have a focus on the vaults and expanded the other areas, also I kinda don't like how expansive the vaults are, it just feels kinda pointless, since there are so many rooms that serve no purpose.

Why the Government or the Law Didn't or Couldn't Intervene and stop them. I'm pretty sure that some Investigations or P.I. aka Private Investigators couldn't hit the Nail on Vault-Tech's Cruel Experiments.

    • @akundaruratkalalupa9710
      @akundaruratkalalupa9710 Před 3 lety +1

      Its already explained throughout fallout games, but in case you didnt know, vault tec is a fake bunker. Most of them were used for experiments. How does no one see this? It was run by government, and no one know about it except Enclave and vault tec themselves. Enclave being the official US government. The experiment will only be conducted when the bomb fell, thats when people will flock inside the vault. When they reveal their true nature, there is no one at all that are alive except those who are inside the vault and Enclave which monitors the experiment. Why having an experiment? The plan is, after the bomb fell and wiped most of humanity. They will re colonize earth / leaving the earth for a better planet. Now, they need to make sure that the ship towards new planet will be filled with a stable society. The data from the vault will be useful, since both, spaceship and vault are in an enclosed space and no way to escape. So with all that experiment, they will get data and could respond accordingly to any other problem they might encounter in space later, when they are on the way to new planet. Since its gonna be a long journey, they are trying to make sure the society will be stable. The data from vault shows all kind of problem that they possibly encounter in space travel. Not all vault used for experiment though, some vault are harmless and were meant to repopulate earth if there is no problem resulting from nuclear radiation.

      Incompetence is often used as a cover for a lack of ethics. It's likely they were purposely experimenting on humans and fully expected them to die, mutate, go crazy.
      Anything the government and their corporate buddies want to get away with can be justified by simple saying either "oops, we're incompetent," and/or "it's for your safety."

    This video is a bit old, but I needed to put in my 2 cents. I think you shouldn't delete the data. I know that people died, but this data could provide food for millions. To delete this data is to doom the wasteland to crops that wield little due to poor conditions. Hunger could be solved. Yes, the spores are terrible, but the vault is a testament to its evil, so I doubt they'll use it. Deleting all of that progress is to scoff in the face of a better wasteland and deny millions food.
