  • Living in Germany has it's ups and downs, there are things you learn to hate over time. Here are things to be aware of before moving here. German culture isn't for everyone.
The tax calculation is for real, i was taking the highest possible taxation for the calculation. More than 80% of the money you make is spent somewhere as tax/obligatory insurances in Germany.

In order to play music on the streets in Berlin legally without being harassed by Ordnungsamt, you need at least 12 separate permits, one for each Bezirk/District. Some of them ask an additional permit to place your stuff on the ground (Permit for use of public space, not included in the permit for playing music) and another one to sell CDs - all these processed by separate authorities and exclusively in German. And they won’t allow you to play in the parks, for those you need special permits from the „green area authority“. The maximum fine if you use an amp with no permit is 50000. No joke. Gotta love the bureaucracy (it is the 2nd biggest fetish category in germany, Germans just love fucking with it).

I relate to this so much. Am an Indian but lived in Japan for many years. Most of my career life, I paid 35% income tax. Aside from income tax, I had to pay two compulsory health insurance, pension insurance, pension tax (which was pointless cuz I wasn't even a japanese citizen), unemployment insurance, residential tax (I lived in an extremely tiny 1300$ apartment), vehicle tax (I didn't have a vehicle, but I got taxed cuz I got a japanese driving license), and television payment (I didn't have television, but had to pay it just because there was a television cable socket in my apartment).
With my promotion, I reached the 40% tax bracket. It felt so pointless to even work because more than half of my income was going to the government. I made the decision to go back to India. The income dip was massive, but now I work just 2 hours a day compared to around 17 hours in Japan.I live a happy life in luxury and I have been able to buy 2 houses and 1 office in the last year, which would have been impossible in Japan even though I was in the highest tax bracket there.

I used to live in Berlin. Germans love paper work and are so organised. They don’t let loose. Even the cool ones still had order and were organised. Even the punks washed their shoes. You could immediately see how hitler was able to brain wash them they love authority and order even the ones who pretend they don’t. They also bump into you in the street and don’t say sorry. Berliners are extremely rude. I made a lot of amazing friends in Berlin but the people and the culture was too much. They are also crap at comedy. Coming from Scotland it was a shock.

As a German, may I vindicate for myself about the Hitler thing? I kinda do feel as though Im offended, but I am also thinking about if that may be true. Perhaps for the older generation?
I do have to say however that the love for order and authority begun way before Hitler, in Prussia, a militarist state who was known for its meticulous structure and rules.
Perhaps its engrained in culture much deeper.
I however do not think that thats bad per se?
Educationally/pedagogy wise seen we do our best to raise the new generations with a free thinking mindset. I for myself have to say that my classmates a few years back during my Abitur werent that big on authority. But thats the youth.
