The Bernina railway sets a few records, including being the highest railway alpine crossing in Europe (2253m), the highest adhesion railway of the continent, the open air railway with the greatest height difference (1824m) and furthermore one of the steepest adhesion railways (conventional railway without cogs) worldwide, with gradients of up to 7%.
The gradients are included in the upper right corner in the same format as they appear to the driver. The arrow indicates whether the gradient is up or down, the larger number is the promille value (1/10 of 1%) and the smaller number indicates the distance of the gradient in meters. You will also see station names with their altitude, tunnel and bridge names with their length and year of construction - as well as other interesting information along the way to improve your viewing experience.
A unique aspect of Switzerland's narrow gauge mountain railways is the mixing of passenger and freight wagons in a single train, with wagons often added or removed at intermediate stops with shunting locomotives. On the Bernina line, the cargo mostly consists of wood on stake cars and derivatives of oil in tank cars. Today we
take a wagon with us from Pontresina to Poschiavo with good for a Coop supermarket.

Es ist beeindruckend, wie selbstverständlich der Triebwagenführer ein Gleis befährt, dessen Schienen völlig unter einer Schneedecke liegen. Man weiß nicht, ob nur 10 cm oder 30 cm und mehr Schnee über den Schienen liegen. Als "Flachland-Deutscher" habe ich null Erfahrung mit den hoch-alpinen Situationen im Winter. One of the most beautiful things in these videos is No Music. So, you can listen to the tranquility, the pleasure of traveling! The fresh snow hides the track so well that it looks like the train is just gliding on snow instead of running along tracks. This is easily your best video to date.

In 1999 I did this route for the first time in my life. Personally it has many meanings such as its beauty, tranquility, vegetation, its picturesque people, the beauty of the mountains, its Italian and Romanch language and its particular dialect such as Poschiavino, but the essential of this trip, very far from my country and my loved ones, it was something even more beautiful than all that, and at the same time very special, I was traveling to that region to marry a beautiful princess and that today we are still married and united as those greats and beautiful mountains and their eternal beauty. One of the most incredible things I've ever seen on CZcams are these live trains! You could take a vacation on one of these videos not only being the conductor but actually feel like you're in another country!
These vacations are magical and I hope to do some of those sometime. Between Italy, Switzerland and Germany there are thousands of little places to see.

All that gorgeous snow, it's breathtaking.
And I'm amazed at how the rails sometimes go on the road, with automobile traffic! And there's no guard rails in places! Sometimes, the train goes right in front of people's house's front doors! Imagine opening the door and a train goes by! Crazy!
Before opening the door, you hear the train or feel the vibrations, so every sane human beeing does not make suicide (=wait till the train passed). Not crazy.

What a wonderful trip ! It changes a lot from home in France where when there is snow and barely 5 cm, everything is blocked ! In Switzerland, no problem. Which gives an extraordinary spectacle. Thank you so much
TGV's are really a nightmare when snowing, they can't handle light snow when its like dust, it clogging the lateral panels causing overeating or short circuits.

Fabulous trip. I was like a kid watching out the window... stop starting to view the villages and houses. Absolutely loved the snow... so pure and white... I am sure that the southern end of the trip and Tirano look glorious in the summertime. Oh, and they do grow grapes at that altitude. Thank you for posting this winter wonderland of a journey.

I must say, that was one heck of a journey through the blizzards. How the train driver managed to wade through the storm is nothing sort of a miracle. In such treacherous weather in our country the entire train operations would have shut down as it doesn't have the equipment to handle that kind of snow blizzards. Anyway, it was a lovely journey. Thanks for sharing.

This is truly stunning, and what a difference from the summer journey. We were lucky enough to do the Tirano to St. Moritz journey in summer 2018. As others have said, it is almost surreal when you can't see the rails and the train just seems to glide through an open scenery. I am very impressed with the control the driver has on icy rails when stopping and accelerating, especially considering the gradient and non-rack & pinion traction. I am concerned with the near white out conditions. Hopefully the audio signal warning systems are reliable cause the driver must have difficulty spotting the small colour lights.
