Engine Crane Hydraulic Seal Replacement

- This video is a step by step demonstration on how I replaced the u-cup seal, pump o-ring, and pump wiper seal on the 8-ton long ram jack that's on my 2-ton Torin engine crane. This engine crane was purchased around 2007 and is all original. The u-cup seal deteriorated over time and caused a loss of pressure in the hydraulic cylinder. Because of this the ram would no longer extend when the pump was actuated. I also replaced the o-ring and wiper seal, in the pump assembly, because they were worn out and the o-ring was not sealing properly either.
Please note that this is not a complete rebuild. I reused the other seals in the jack that were still functioning properly because I needed to use the engine crane and didn't have time for a complete rebuild. I suggest replacing all seals in the jack, if possible. I plane to completely rebuild my engine crane and long ram jack when time permits.
My total cost for the seals was about $5.68(purchased at a local hydraulic parts supply) and the tractor fluid was $20.21(for 1 gallon and I only used about 3 cups). The cost of parts and fluid was a fraction of the cost of buying a new jack!
This video is for informational purposes only. Hydraulic parts should be serviced and repaired by qualified professionals. Mistakes made during the repair of engine crane jacks can result in property damage or personal injury/death. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Best video on here for fixing ur Engine hoist.
Thank you!
You are a rockstar for this bro 💪
Thank you for this video i can now fix my hoist jack
Great video thank you. Very helpful.
Great job thankyou
thanks
Thanks.. i loaned out my crane and got it back with the ram out with no seal on the bottom. now i know how to get in there and hopefully can find the seal and evertyhing intact since it was a new harbor freight unit.
Sorry to hear about that. The borrower must have extended it too far. I worked on a floor jack recently and it had a built in pressure release to prevent that from happening but haven't seen them on the long ram jacks, for some reason. I hate loaning out my tools because I take the time to read the manuals and properly care for my tools, where as the idiots who borrow them are careless so I tend to get tools back late, dirty, scratched up, damaged, etc. Engine cranes are one of those tools that every backyard mechanic wants to borrow cause they don't wanna store something that big and/or pay for one. I've actually had confrontations with two different acquaintances who borrowed mine and caused problems for me. Best to throw those things under a tarp and don't tell anyone you have one -_-
Where were you able to buy the seals and O-rings?
I purchased them at a local hydraulic supply company. If you live in a big city you should have one locally. If not, you could try a company that supplies parts for heavy equipment, like bobcats, tractors, and excavators. There are hydraulic supply companies online as well but the prices will probably be a bit higher than purchasing locally.
Silly question - could you not have stacked two of the 5mm seals to make up a 10mm seal with two lips? That way if one failed the second would hold too?
The hydraulic parts salesman actually suggested that to me when I told him I wanted a 10mm high seal but I wouldn't do it. Having one u cup seal means that it will have a solid steel shoulder to rest on and apply pressure to but if you stack them then the outter seal will get all the pressure from the fluid and will push that force against the lips of the seal behind it, rather than the steel shoulder. Just my .2c but who knows.
Thanks! You just safe me $400
What is the name of the seal at the bottom that you didn’t replace? Mine was broken and I need to change it. And what’s the name of the local shop you bought your kit from? I would like to use your measurements to rebuild mines. This will be my first time doing so and I wouldn’t know what parts to ask for. Our cylinders look identical.
Hydraulic Sales and Service inc. If you're talking about the one at the bottom of the reservoir I think it's just called the reservoir base seal. I didn't pull it out but from looking at the video I think it's just a large o-ring.
So I've added oil to mine but it still won't lift a load. It pumps and lifts without boom attached but not with. I've tried bleeding air but maybe I did it wrong or it could be bad seals inside? I got it without oil plug in it. Maybe debris or junk got in it?
Did you replace any seals or just added the hydraulic oil? How old is the unit?
@@frylockthefryman Actually so when I changed the fluid I removed a small screw & put a small screw in the wrong way. Once I put it in the correct way all was well.
@@WiseRuler Cool, glad to hear you got it working!
Could you tell me if there are 2 x steel balls at the base of the pump? I did retrieve one from in there and found one more on the floor!
I didn't see any but the parts diagram shows there's a steel ball under the little pump and another one behind the release valve.
@frylockthefryman Thank you man. I don't suppose you could share that parts diagram with me? Just so I know what to ask for when I'm looking for bits 🤔
Hola desde México, una pregunta ¿Cómo se llama el programa que tienes para Vel el diagrama de ese tipo de gato.me lo puedes pasar,gracias..

Is the piston integrated with the rod?
I believe so.
Who rebuilt it Charley Chaplin no voice i instructions
Do you happen to have the link?
Link to what?
@@frylockthefryman my apologies man. I was referring to the replacement parts. I figured everything out though.
Where did you get the parts diagram?
I think I just searched for "black jack long ram jack parts diagram" and looked through images until I found it. Sometimes you can search for a part number and look through pictures until you find a diagram as well.
It’s a good video but for 37.00 I bought a whole new hydraulic pump. How much were the seals? 10-15 bucks. What is your time worth?
This 2 ton hoist requires an 8 ton hydraulic long ram jack and they typically go for $80+. This is also a Black Jack hoist purchased around 2006 and many times the older the tool, the better the quality. Plus, I enjoy repairing machinery and bringing it back to life. I purchased a 1980s Craftsman floor jack for $10 with bad seals and got it working with new seals for under $20 as well.
@@frylockthefryman I get it. You made a good video and you got the pride of restoring it yourself. A vevor brand red 8 ton long ram jack is 30.37 currently

What is your parts numbers
I ordered the seals based on size, not part numbers. I'm not sure if there were part numbers on the receipt but you can order the seals by size.
Securing the boom with a rope on a flat angle like that . . . mmnnaaa or wear a helmet. 😁
For the rest of the video , exactly the info I needed to start on mine. Thanks man.
😅goody
Bravo ! Nicely replaced the parts ,but you should have cleaned the tank and cylinder tube, to remove old fluid
Thank you and I plan to clean everything properly and change all seals, in the future. This was just to get the hoist up and running quickly but a proper rebuild will be coming!
Good up on to the knife part….not good!! Use the correct tool
