I just commented on the album version, here on youtube on how Ozzy's vocal on this tune is off the scale high pitched madness, that would be almost impossible for most singers, of all types to replicate
@@Freehardy Yeah I don't know if it was pitched up using tape in the studio like the Beatles did with songs on the Pepper album, because Ozzy was a huge Beatles fan, but either way even in the year it came out Ozzy struggled to sing the chorus especially, verses were ok but the chorus is where his voice just gave out completely ha. The studio take lives on forever though so that's all that matters.
@@SiLoMixMasterthe sabbath version was recorded in C# standard tuning, I think Metallica is playing it in D so it’s already a higher key and ozzy sang it quite high in studio so I don’t think it was pitched up, possibly cocaine induced though.
Good ear bro! Check out band called SANDWEISS do this and CHILDREN OF THE GRAVE....WAY BETTER VERSION, nothing against James and the boys, just everything after A.J.F.A. doesn't do it for me, SLAYER always been my choice in the METAL genre.
Well this is kind of cool to see. When I was 16 (in the 80's) I went to see Ozzy in concert in Ft. Worth, TX. There was also this little opening band called Metallica - LOL - w/Cliff Burton on bass! Well I was a huge fan of theirs already so when I heard they would be at a local record store, signing autographs before the concert, I had to go. The store owner was playing Black Sabbath over the store music system in honor of the upcoming concert and THIS SONG hit me like a ton of bricks because I wasn't fully aware of it at the time. I recall very clearly watching Lars "drum" the table with his pens while this song played. He actually looked up at my girlfriend who was laughing at how "cute" it was watching him play along like a little kid and a huge smile came across his face as he realized what he was doing. Such a fond memory and this video just brought it storming back. Love it!
Damn. I was born in 90. Definitely the wrong decade for me to be born....never got to see Metallica with Cliff....never got to see Pantera. But!....I have had the opportunity to see some legends before their passing. I have seen Sabbath with Ozzy ( I know he isn't dead) AND seen Sabbath with Dio (at the time they called themselves Heaven and Hell), I got to meet Lemmy at a Scorpions show... But goddamnit. Metallica with Cliff. That's awesome bro.
I saw that tour in Hampton, VA. Most of the fans didn't even know who Metallica were yet because they had zero airplay in my area. I had a neighbor from Florida who had given me a mixtape with Kill 'em All on one side and Ride the Lightning on the other side so I knew some songs. They blew the show up without all of the lighting and effects Ozzy had and then Cliff died in Europe just a few weeks later. A few years later I saw them headline for And Justice for All and they were huge by then because they had been on MTV. Great era for Metallica.
I still cant understand why metallica are so good live, as simple song it may be, its not only tight, but it just sounds HUGE. Even ozzy and geezer were having a good old headbang
Man, Metallica really have a knack for NAILING cover songs and making them their own. James' rhythm sound is HUGE. So fucking heavy and thick And Rob's fat bassline cuts right through the mix and provides a killer bottom end with real clarity. They did Sabbath proud for sure. Wish I could get a HQ mp3 of this performance.
I remember this - was between St. Anger and Death Magnetic, and kinda was the first sign of the "old" Metallica returning. So was both tribute to Sabbath and a welcome return from Tallica.
It coulda been punchier, man, but it was mostly the mix, not the band. They were playing quite well for late stage Metallica, no offense to the die-hards intended.

Metallica is really on the top of their game. This is probably the best hard rock / metal performance as far as quality and mix. Every musician is amazing in their own right but together they really raise the bar.

There was zero chance of this being played by the radio bit it Rocked Loud And Proud on our turntables and car stereos back in the day. Great cover Great song. Metallica knows cus this is what they grew up on. Metal forever
Agree. Plus original is in F#, a "hole" lot lower (four notes lower than A they are playing it in here). But of course they still kick ass and I doubt many could do better. Actually singing that tune in that high a key is amazing in itself.
wow and whoever said hetfields vocals are terrible...they;re not...you cant expect him to sing like ozzy.,...he sang this his way which makes it such a great cover
I hate covers usually, but these guys always bring something respectful and elevated. The way Hetfield sings the main verse is a higher note (3rd? 7th?) than the one Ozzy sang and it totally works. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
I don't know why anyone is complaining about James' voice in this song. This song is supposed to be sung all high pitched (if anyone has heard the original Black Sabbath version Ozzy sings very high). I wont deny that Pantera's cover of this song is amazing though.
calm the fuck down people, james isnt singning the same notes as ozzy does in the studio version, he's singing an harmony so its easier for him to reach the notes. I think it's a great cover though
I know every young metal head is on a hate Metallica thing but I give all music a fair shot. I love their covers so far but don't always want to hear it on the radio. Damn, this is good though. @CaptainWazzock I know exactly what you mean. Those tones are in perfect sync. That bass is just blasting out. The sound hit me like a wave. Such a nice set up.
Metallica made their living from being a cover band . All those NWOBHM bands they covered so well back in the 80s to build up a following. It was a very clever strategy as audiences in their hometowns will have had no idea who the likes of Diamond Head were, so the songs probably sounded fresh and original to them. And then people say Lars is no good - think again in terms of strategy.
This is simply fucking badass. Metallica NAILED this performance. Love the fat guitar sound...they sound even heavier than usual. I'm not the biggest Metallica fan any more, but credit where it's due: this is an AWESOME performance.
A lot of people on here are saying the song is too high for James to sing. Most of the notes that he's singing here are notes that are actually in his comfortable range. The majority of the vocal notes I believe are C#4 to F#4 with some G#4's and I believe the highest note in this version of the song is an A#4. These are notes that James sings for most of Metallica's songs. I think it's just the WAY he's singing. He's singing more nasally and less gruff.
After all the praise and love Metallica have given Sabbath over the decades, you think they intentionally aimed to MOCK Sabbath to their faces at the Rock'n'Roll HoF of all places?? Awesome story! Thanks for sharing
Amazing
It's too high for James' voice. Well, it's too high even for Ozzy's voice...
I think James did better with it than a lot of Sabbath recordings I've heard. I didn't expect him to get as close over the chorus, tbh.
Phil anselmo did best probably. Look at the Pantera cover.

I bought the original Sabbath album in '75 and this is one of my fovourites.
Metallica is doing a great job - they rocks!!

Like to see the original guys from sabbath enjoying the tribute ❗️

It's a 3rd. The band is playing in D# and James is singing in G
