  • Meet Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, and follow his journey to the Realm of the Dead and his fierce battle to escape the underworld.
    --
The Monkey King, a legendary troublemaker hatched from stone and schooled in divine magic, had stolen the Dragon Lord’s most treasured weapon: a magical staff. Returning to his kingdom to show off his treasure to his tribe of warrior monkeys, he finds himself caught in the clutches of two soul collectors, dragging him to his death. Shunan Teng details the Monkey King’s journey to the underworld.
Lesson by Shunan Teng, directed by Yijia Cao & Mohammad Babakoohi.

Second, actually. His first layer of immortality was practicing forbidden Daoist teachings and magic under Puti Zushi, earning him the name of Sun Wukong, which means "The Monkey Awakened to the Void." His third layer of immortality was drinking the Wine of the Immortals during the feast of the Jade Emperor. Getting drunk from this, he then consumed many of the Peaches of Immortality (that he was supposed to be guarding at the time), and then, while still in his drunken fit, stumbled upon Laozi's laboratory, found five medications gourds filled with immortality pills, and consumed all of the pills within all five gourds, making his fourth and fifth layers of immortality. His sixth layer of immortality came from eating a Ginseng Fruit during his pilgrimage with Tripitaka, as well as reaching the Journey to the West's destination, where they consumed the Buddhist equivalent of the immortality granting foods of the Jade Emperor, which was his seventh layer of immortality. His final layer was given to him when he attained his title of The Victorious Fighting Buddha, making a total of eight layers, much like the Eight Paths of Daoism.

Also, the author of Journey To The West was a staunch Buddhist (seriously, he's as pushy about vegetarianism as a modern day vegan) and most of the stuff involving the celestial bureaucracy is generally taken to be a criticism\satire of Confucianism. That's definitely the case with his depiction of the Heavenly Court in the book, and seems to also apply here. As you say, it's kind of absurd that Wukong can get away with such a simple trick, but the lords of death are hamstrung by their own rule-,making.

@Simz Zxy like how Chinese mythologies have different layers of the heaven (33 layers) with each layer harder to breach, immortality also have a bit of a level up and differences. U can have immortality to live forever and did something seriously wrong (in the case of SWK where he wrecked the east sea palace) so have the death enforcers specifically to chase after you. Then you can have immortality without any death enforcers chasing after you, but possible to be killed by another immortal in a fight. Third one (if I ain't wrong) is invulnerability and unable to be killed at all even if you're old af or burn, shocked, beheaded etc. The highest one is omnipotence and complete control, which if I am not wrong only one top tier god (Buddha or HongJun, unclear who) has it.

so my teacher used to tell about his other perspective on the Journey to the West:
Wukong: people with gifted abilities to overcome anything yet stuck in following commands of powerful figures, only to be called out to solve the problems.
Xuanzang: people with authority and power in hand yet incompetent, blinded and constantly misjudged the situations, leading to their own demise.
Bajie: Bane of the society, people who are weak and constantly indulged in their own sins but when time comes they are no where to be found. When being brought out to be judged however, they would be the slimiest tongues to slip out of the situation, most notably talking sweet to people with authority for help and defense.
Wujing: mindless drones without opinion of themselves who would follow orders without fault and in charge of taking care of most of the lowest jobs as told.
