  • We pay homage to William Fairbairn and Rex Applegate - the fathers of modern close-quarters combat - by delving into their history and highlighting one of their innovative weapons. The Smatchet was a unique knife that had an intimidating appearance and was deadly in the hands of the OSS agents who used it.

@@dannylizgarciaapplegate7306 sorry it took so long to respond health issues, my father was named Jess Willard Applegate born in Marion Il. serve with Patton in 3rd Army and was a pow of Germany captured in the battle of the bulge. His grandfather was Jess. As you know he was one of the three brothers that open the Oregon trail .I've been to Eugene . It must be in the genes as I was a LEO then bodyguard, K9 Sgt for an International Maritime drug Interdiction task force, did serious riot work enforcing Federal Labor law , and was second in command of a 625 man Spec Ops group, then did a stint with the SAS training bomb dogs after 911 for Homeland and TSA.
My last work was done with Col Joe Evan's (Delta force) providing security for Gen Wesley Clark (NATO COMMANDER) during his presidential campaign. Hard name to live up to but I've tried . Nice to hear from any family on Dads side as my folks divorced when I was young. Rex was always a great mentor if only through his teachings. I was always meaning to ride the trail from St Louis to Oregon on a Harley but after 17 reconstructive surgeries it's now not possible. God Bless hope your all doing well.

The Smatchet was based directly off of a WWI Welsh Fusillier's trench sword which in turn was based on a Celtic sword over 2000 years old.

Really not sure what they're talking about when they say it was designed to mimic the kukri. It's double edged and completely straight while a kukri is single edged with an aggressive forward cant. The smatchett looks exactly like the kind of leaf-bladed sword that was fairly common in antiquity across multiple cultures and evolved into the gladius.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiphos
Straight point for thrusting, leaf blade to add machete-like mass to the center of percussion. Certainly a time-tested design and effective against unarmored opponents, even better if they don't have shields, then a lighter, more thrust-centric design would be favored which is no doubt why the gladius evolved. Still I doubt it saw too much use in 20th century conflicts. Pretty sure most anyone would prefer a subgun or a shotgun for close up work.

I just received my AF Combat 2 from Amazon. I love the no-nonsense design and Boker did a very nice job of executing. I may look to get a Smatchet someday.

I am a Baguazhang practitioner and what I noticed from this video is the strong resemblance between the Fairbarn smatchet and the Shangai Shadow knife I train with.
