    Wow. I knew that piston guns were hold-sensitive, and that it had something to do with the recoil and the time it takes for the pellet to leave the barrel, but I've never seen it explained like this. Thank you!

    Love your videos Matt! I've been using and handloading for traditional firearms for many years but there are differences between air gun ballistics and conventional ballistics, and you point those out better than anyone. You highlight things you need to consider such as spin drift, and when it comes into play at the reduced ranges of air guns. That's one thing that I realized that helped me become a better air gun shooter - that you have to consider wind, etc. at ranges that you wouldn't even consider factoring it in with even small conventional firearms. I learned that well from you. Keep up the great work and I look forward to hearing more from you.

    Thanks for sharing. I bought my PCP gun (AA 510 .22 xtra fac)and I love it. It was the last item accessible in Poland:))I won't sell it. I do also use Norica spring gun which can generate about 17 ft of power. Great but not so acurate as PCP. Like you said, PCP guns can be very expensive.

    One of the reasons that spring guns get a poor reputation for accuracy is that most people buy cheap ones. The cheaper spring guns use low quality piston heads and have poor machining on the inside of the air cylinder. These two things cause an inconsistent seal and air can leak past the piston head but how much air leakage occurs can change from shot to shot.
    Also, CO2 can be very consistent but it must be used properly. CO2 guns tend to operate at about 900 psi but this can change depending on the temperature. CO2 also cools as you use it so shooting slow is best for accuracy. I'd finally recommend that people use a bulk fill bottles as opposed to the small cartridges. The larger bottles can deliver 1000+ very consistent shots provided that the ambient temperature doesn't change too much.

    I bought my first air rifle a Crossman 880 back in 1978.
    It's a pump up and still sold. Quite strong at 10 pumps, and you could vary the power by pump count so I could scare off some pests without killing them.
    I hunted with it for years as a kid and killed birds for trapping including crows and doves. Also squirrels and rabbits tho rabbits were usually headshots or required a walk up 2nd shot.

    I have 3 springers, 2 pcps and my old Crossman pneumatic I got as a 13 year old in 1986. the PCPs indeed are a class apart and the power is unimaginable to someone who has only used springers. one drawback of the PCPs is that the shot count drops dramatically as you go up in caliber, my .25 Marauder only gets about 16 good shots before it needs air again, while my Steyr H5A in .22 gives about 60. a .177 version of either of these would give 100 plus shots, which would mean that you might not need to carry fill equipment in the field. as for springers, what the cost is how they perform in my experience, my Gamo big cat is only good enough for plinking and close range small animal pest control since it's a .25. I also have a recoilless Diana Air King fixed barrel side lever in .177 which is pretty accurate, but human error creeps in after a few shots because its so damn heavy. I also have a break barrel Feinwerkbau Sport .177 which has amazing accuracy for a break barrel springer, more than the Diana, or even the Marauder pcp for that matter. it's light and beautifully balanced, not to mention finished. I'm looking to get a .177 Daystate soon, but am confused as to which model to get. mainly for long range target shooting.

    The old Sheridan Blue Streak pumper has survived more or less intact in the Crosman C9 series. I can still cram 12 pumps into my old Blue Streak and get 900+fps in .20 cal. I bought it in 1980. It has killed coyote, rabbit, and literally hundreds of quail and dove. Hang a small empty elmers glue bottle on a six foot string and 12 pump it between each shot. DON'T let the target stop swinging between shots. Lather, rinse, repeat for two 500 round boxes of pellets and you will forever after hit what you aim at. No matter what you shoot.

    • @jakej8305
      @jakej8305 Před 7 lety +5

      I believe gas pistons still recoil significantly. They still require artillery hold unlike pcp

  • @senatorjosephmccarthy2720

    3: 21 - .Thanks for the fine comparison. Multi-pumps require a lot of motion, noise, and time between each shot, too, so I don't try using my Crosman Legacy 1000 for hunting anything that might provide a second shot.
    3: 49 - . Some CO2 pellet guns are plenty accurate within their range. The CO2 cools the mechanics if the gun is shot rapidly, but even then, 4 rapidly repeated shots will be accurate. They're great for small varmints and far less initial price. And a Diana Chaser is a quality and able small burrower hunting gun.
    Have to agree tho, many PCPs are the best overall.

    I think you need to add one more category its the on board pump pcp . Its a pump pneumatic but instead of it releasing all the air that was stored at one time the pumps sends the air to a bigger tank and works in the same way a pcp works so you get multiple shots before you need to pump it up again . Unlike the regular pcp's that have to be filled with a external tank or foot pump ,there is no need for foot pump or external refill tanks with the on board hand pump pcp . The best thing about the on board style pcp is that you can shoot all day and keep your gun at the same pressure so there is no drop or a curve . You just take a shot and pump the gun one or two pumps and your at the same pressure you started with and there is no limit to how many shots you can take while in the woods or at the range . the only thing you are going to run out of is pellets and thats the way it should be . czcams.com/video/-jbzc-ssiJs/video.html

    • @Sideshowbobx
      @Sideshowbobx Před 5 lety

      I agree there, if you limited the scope to pumper with the volume of 1377-2289 system, you ignore the range this single shot pcp design offers. Especially when adding blow open valve designs as the Sharp Ace to the table - it only takes someone to build a big pumper with blow open valve and polygon slug barrel, bonus for a manometer to gauge the exact pressure in the valve reservoir room and extra reservoir volume.

    @Lucas-ht7cf Před 8 lety

    Yeah the crossman 1377 may have low power but if you like to mod airguns and move wrenches the crossman 1377 is a great gun i think it is the most expensive airgun under $50 just because of all the aftermarket parts upgrades you can do with it. And just because a gun is a co2 powered doesn't mean you can't run. Hpa there are plenty of conversion kits and hook ups you can do but be carefull running higher pressure in co2 guns most parts in those aren't meant to handle higher PSI pressure then your unregulated CO2 tanks that operate at 800 PSI

    Hey Matt, great video. From my experience, most people have the perception that spring air rifles are inaccurate because, in some models, you break the barrel to load the gun. Upon snapping the barrel back into place, the barrel might not align perfectly and thus, if you're shooting with a scoped gun, there would be some inaccuracy. Is this a real problem or simply myth? Cheers.

      It is true about the lock up problem it is the pivot washer going out or loose tolences how to fix get brass or broze washers machine up anouther problem could be the spring that locks the barrel up i beleive is called the live jam is not long or strong enough to get a sturdy lock up. Good scoop mounts and lock tight will help the scoops moving and as well as getting tighter groops from the harmonics is to soft bed your gun stocks

      +willam endler (willendler1993) I'd generally stay far away from anything shoting faster than 950 fps. If the pellet shoots any faster than Mach 0.8, then as a general rule it will destabilize. If you're jist plinking that's a different story, but for precision shooting slower can often be better

    my good man I beg to differ the springer is the truest form of shooting you have to manage recoil which in term makes you a better shooter and in all honesty is more consistent than any PCP you just have to shoot the right springer the pcp is a waist of time and the springer will give you more accurate shots then any PCP get a service tune on your tx200 mark3 and kill at will

    • @AirArmsHuntingSA
      @AirArmsHuntingSA  Před 7 lety +6

      +kenny cadarett Springers have their place, but they will never outperform PCPs. Why do you think there is a seperate class for springers and PCPs in every form of competition shooting? Let's take the Extreme Benchrest for example. You need at least 50 foot pounds to even dream of placing in the top 10 at 100 yards on a windy day. Have you ever seen a springer that can shoot 50 foot pounds and still be accurate? No. Don't compare apples and oranges.

    • @greedygringoprospecting6941
      @greedygringoprospecting6941 Před 7 lety +2

      you might have a point but like I said It's knowing your rifle why do you think we all prefer a mildot reticle you just to compensate for the wind you don't need all the power you just need to understand how you rifle performs with you shooting it once you have had lead down range then you truly understand the rifle like ted in ted's hold over he wanted the $$$$ so he sent lead down range to get the $$$$ correct he held up a check for $5,000 because he sent lead down range to understand how he reacted with his rifle so it's not how much power it's how much you have shot the rifle ask a sniper

    I always watch your channel and like it a lot. I don't usually comment but I disagree with your comments on spring piston air rifles. I shoot all kinds of guns from air to bullets to shotgun. I've got f.a.c.. air rifles and sub 12ft lbs PCP and sprinters and I can honestly say I can do the same with my HW97k and TX200HC as I can with PCP they are both tuned of course. A top end spring piston wants some beating. If Some people was to find fault with spring piston I would have thought it would be the weight although it doesn't bother me it helps in my opinion. Just my thoughts for what it's worth. Lastly if people learned to shoot a springer instead of going straight to PCP (a dead.soulless gun) they would find more satisfaction in there shooting achievements and make a more rounded shooter would you not agree?

    I have 2 springers tx200 and a hw99, both highly tuned and I have beaten top end PCP in hft with both.. I would say I have one of the best tuned .22 hw99 in the UK, its just like a PCP but better as its a springer.

      +lns41 Things are very different in the UK... Here in South Africa where we aren't limited to 12 ft.lbs, springers would NEVER be able to compete with PCPs because high power springers are a nightmare to shoot. So people stick with 10-15 ft.lb springers, and when you put a 15 ft.lb springer against a 30 ft.lb PCP the PCP will come out tops every time. When I visited the UK last year I realised that we live in totally different worlds

      @slingshotneedy Před 8 lety

      +AirArmsHuntingSA yes then I would say PCP lol, but in sub 12 springers can challenge pcps here in UK. only springer I think could possibly do well in FAC format is a tx200 sr as it is recoilless.

      +AirArmsHuntingSA yes but leaning to shoot well with a springer makes you a wicked shot with a pcp

    Quick question anyone can answer I don't mind but do you reckon a medium range springer would be capable of taking out small pests like pigeons or small rodents?

    my hopes are to get a CO2 Crosman and to take it modify it drill a hole into the CO2 cylinder and have a CO2 compressed tank placed into it of course it's not going to be able to handle extreme pressures but it should be able to handle a lot more pressure than it had before and last a lot longer for being very cheap do you recommend anything that could be done like this or do you really recommend anything I could use for instance I've seen somebody use a solenoid switch that allows you to push it and it opens up a homemade chamber that compressed air goes into and the solenoid or the switch is pressed and allows the air to go into the barrel that's almost like I would want to do I've seen somebody use a fire extinguisher for a homemade gun but that is not my style

    what brand of spring gun would you recommend for a beginner

    • @Kapov
      @Kapov Před 8 lety

      Personally my very first springer was a Perfecta MOD 31 ( rebranded by Umarex in EU I believe ). Really cheap gun, since it's all Chinese made you may need to work on the stock a little, sights are a bit crap so a red dot ( a cheap one, even with some parallax, will be ok if you're not shooting from quite far away ) could be useful but not obligatory etc ... Accuracy is OK, I've fired several thousands rounds without problems, I used it for plinking and had a lot of fun. I just bought a way better spring loaded gun for accuracy shooting and some pest control, Weirauch HW77, amazing rifle. I have no word to describe how much the quality of the adjustable trigger, the finish and accuracy are better than the chinese products but still ... A cheap one helped me choosing a better gun after a few years of use. Also, even it's not a top quality gun, you will train your shooting stance, breath, concentration ... Money won't buy you that ! Sorry for my English.

      Thanks. I use to have Hatsan mod 33 (first springer gun, though still around beginner level) sadly though it broke. Been looking to get something simple in either Spring or Nitro piston for a rifle.

      +Woods Lore I have a cometa falcon, old but gold the power in the thing is insane, if your looking for all round greatness though the best springers in the world are made by weihrauch, mainly the hw series

  • @buildurtruckurway9118

    I definitely don’t feel like you gave Co2 a fair shake. There’s sub 200$ co2 guns that outshoot 1000$ pcps. The qb78 for example the xs60c the Umarex fusion, cr600w the b16a1 in the co2 version. All can lay half inch groups at 50 yards on co2 And can be converted to pcp with nothing more then a fill cap and regulator.
    If you run it off a small hpa bottle you can get a huge shot string just like with co2. No co2 isn’t viable for hunting at 100 yards due to lack of energy co2 has in 22 but I regularly take rabbits and squirrels at 50 yards with a sub 500 FPS .22 qb78 and they drop instantly with either head or Vital shots. It’s tuned around jsb heavies.
    To scale it’s like taking a steel shot glass to the head or heart at 500fos there’s no survival.
    Co2 in .25 and bigger calibers has proven to be amazing at 100 yards aswell. The bigger bore and heavy pellets actually give the co2 a better chance to expand and turn into a gas more efficiently. My friend has an mrod that he ran on c02 and it still broke 800fps with a 26grain pellet.
