- Imagine a 2023 Rugby World Cup, with New Zealand, Scotland, Ireland, South Africa, Ireland, Australia, Samoa and Japan; all as quarter-finalists. Had World Rugby waited longer to make the draw, this could have happened. This video here is about an alternate method of creating the draw and why this would have been even better than what we've been given!

The soccer World Cup draw is done six months in advance which is plenty of time to book flights, hotels and plan the final phase of preparations. I don’t see why it can’t work for rugby
Simple. Rugby is a contact sport where you need to know your opposition. By getting a decent amount of time before the RWC, northern and Southern Hemisphere opposition get an opportunity to schedule fixtures with each other.
Great video Max. I agree.
Also, So tired of seeing Aus, Fiji and Georgia in the same pool.
If I was a Welsh fan I’d be so bored with rugby right now… I can kinda see why they try to tell us rugby is dying? 😅
This would have been the best draw: 🔥
POOL A - IRE - ARG - WAL - GEO - CAN
POOL B - FRA - AUS - ITA - SAM - NAM
POOL C - NZ - ENG - FIJ - USA - URU
POOL D - SAF - SCO - JAP - TON - SPA
I guess so, I just don’t think we can manufacture the draws so crazy 😂
Canada Didn't qualify
@@TheBlackJersey 🤣 poor USA and Canada lol
Dunno what Japanese side you've been watching but they're deffo back on the decline. There isn't a chance they beat England or Argentina in this world Cup
They’re on the decline… but so are Wales and England 😂😂😂
@TheBlackJersey not really to the same extent though. England's decline has been from the 2nd best side in the world to being about as good as Scotland and Wales have gone from 4th best to being about as good as Ireland were last world cup.
Meanwhile Japan lost by 50 to a "declining" England team and couldn't even beat a 3rd string(at best) NZ side in two games they didn't ever really look like winning.
I’m not going to be a Japan apologist or anything here, but I don’t think the current England side would have won by that much. They’ve gone backwards to 2015 tactics under Borthwick 😅
@TheBlackJersey we will see. Good 30 point + win incoming
Argentina and Samoa to get out of that pool 😎
Timing of draw also doesn't make sense when the tier 2/3 nations haven't even qualified for the tournament yet.
Yeah exactly, get the 2027 qualifications done asap, within two years, then announce the draw for 2027’s RWC in December 2025.
While what you propose makes perfect sense, I'll have to admit that I find this world cup particularly exciting, with only pool A being straightforward.
Yeah, Italy are still a few years away from being Six Nations contenders, but are on the right track 🙌
The draw has made the group stages more interesting, rather than just a procession.
I agree, the stage is set for a dark horse to make the final or even win it. Equally if there is an establishment winner they will have earned it the hardest of hard ways.
More interesting for the lower ranked sides perhaps but in an ideal world you want the best teams at the semi final stages
Interesting for the South African fans who will get the shock of their lives 😂
Thanks for the analysis Max and totally agree that the draw is a farce. Just cannot see the ABs coming third. Either they will go out in the quarter finals to South Africa or Ireland or … if they are good enough to win that match they will make the final. The ABs would be strong favourites to beat any of Australia England Argentina and for that matter Wales.
Cheers for watching Pete 🙏
Fully agreed, the way they did the draw was ridiculous. Most of the best teams on one side of the draw.
Same way as its always been done, so its fair just unlucky.
As it stands the two semi finalists from the top half of the draw will be battered and bruised by the time they take to the pitch while the two semi finalists from the bottom half of the draw should have plenty in the tank meaning the likes of Argentina, England and Australia ( or even Fiji) could get to the final or even win the tournament based on fatigue or more precisely lack of fatigue.
This underscores my view that winning the World Cup is about the best campaign management rather than being the best team.
Despite Ireland being v on form this year i do feel bad that for all the work theyve put in they have a fairly rancid path.
The only way i can see them off-balance the disadvantage is if they "throw" the sa game by using their B side so they have a few more rested players for Scotland and France/nz.
Also, this draw was my ready excuse if they do get knocked out in the qfs but now i have an even better one - those pukey new jerseys! Gahhhh!
Ireland will beat the Boks for sure. The Boks look absolutely clueless with de Klerk at 9, their team is just simply too old to look past their pre-programmed game settings 😅
@@TheBlackJersey yeah but their B team hockeyed australia! The same oz team that nearly beat Ireland in November
That was the Boks’ A team. Their B team is the one that played in NZ. The team that played in Nz was an utter shell of the one that demolished the Aussies and Nienaber is too stuck in his ways to see that. It’ll be his downfall 💯
The draw could be better, but if you have the best team, it shouldn’t matter what the draw is.
France will probably win, but it’ll be a shame to see them eventually win a one-sided final over a tired Pumas team, should someone from the other side of the draw progress so far 😅
@@TheBlackJersey I don’t really know what to say to that. France could win a one sided final over Ireland if they lose couple of vital players by injury. I guess if the final ends up like a good pool match, that only means we all got to watch great quarters and semis. 🤷🏼♂️
These pool matches are going to be Awesome !!!
@@TheBlackJersey The sides swap for the semi finals though, so it really doesn't matter does it?
I've watched many vidéo complaining about the early draw but none of them proposed an alternative approach. Thanks for that.
At least, if FR, NZ, IR or SA are champions, they will have deserved their title of best team in the world.
Cheers from France. Allez les bleus 🇨🇵🏉🐓
Everything I watched they recommended a more recent draw based on rankings like this guy
Glad you enjoyed it mate 🙌
The world cup would not even be a competition if the pools were preselected/balanced to have a better distribution of the top nations. With Pool B this year being the group of death and Pool C having an underperforming Aus and Wales leaves both groups wide open and could lead to a tier 2 nation securing a quarter final spot. Should be an exciting group stage cant always expect an easy ride its the RWC.
I’d love to see Samoa beat England 😏
World Rugby always take it easy on their NH teams.
How ? France and Ireland share the same side of the draw as NZ and SA.
Uhhhh… no. It’s not a conspiracy…
anyway to win the title, you have to be better than everyone... that's the principle I think.
This new comp they are doing should decide the seedings for the following world cup. It finishes just over 18 months beforehand and its standings are built from everyone playing each other.
Fair points raised in this one lad
Cheers mate 🙌
If Fiji can execute this year i reckon they can beat Wales and Aus. Would be awesome to see them in the Quarters
Fiji’s new coach is inexperienced. I’d say we’ll see Georgia and Australia progress 💯
That Pool A would suit you, wouldn’t it.
Awesome content
Cheers for watching man 🙌
We can’t be shocked can we when it’s always been done his way, however I agree like in football the draw should be done within a season of the tournament amount
World Rugby have already said it will change for the 2027 World Cup. They have realized their mistakes and are sorting it. There’s no point complaining about this draw as it can’t be changed. Let’s just accept it knowing it will be better next time.
I’ll see if they keep their word 😅
@@TheBlackJersey Surely they have to, rather that risk all the backlash. Stranger things have happened right enough.
Looks okay from here
I don't mind the draw tbh, it makes it interesting and gives the better teams a tougher road to the final. Loads of big matches in the pools and we aren't sure who's going to make it through in most pools. I'm pretty keen and worried for the first time in ages which is good 😀
I’m not a fan of the draw at all. If we literally see Wales make it out of the pool stage, it’s messed up 😂
@@TheBlackJersey haha shots fired! In that sense I see what you mean, the best four teams should go through, but the format still lends itself to the "to be the best you have to beat the best". So I don't mind as an all blacks supporter having to face France Ireland and or south Africa on the way because that's a true challenge
It could equally be argued that the cream still ends up at the top.
Absolutely, mate.
Much appreciated 🙌
Given the quarters are all on in two cities they coulr have just switched them around to A v C and B v D than A v B and C v d
Yes, the draw is a joke, and it's a shame that only 2 of the top 5 teams can get to the semifinal. However, it does make the pools super exciting. Pool C and D, are wide open. I have to think Fiji and Samoa have a chance of a semifinal.
I totally agree it needs to change, but i do think it would be less interesting if we could be sure of the semifinals before a ball is kicked.
Yup, Samoa will beat England for sure. I wish I had the time left to make a video on the Samoans!
Yes;as an Ozzy I am sick of us playing Fiji and Wales!
Surely a year and a half out(after the Six Nations of the previous year)is early enough for the draw.
As a Scotsman i agree wholeheartedly.....unless we were in a different group. Haha
I dont think it matters. Teams aim to peak for when it matters and the world cup draw will be part of the planning. I.e. aim to win a six nations during draw year. We all know the world rankings dont mean alot. Wales was no1 this time last world cup and south africa had lost to italy. I think a new method of deciding the pools is needed. maybe top 4 teams from each world cup gets to be the first team in each of the pools for the next or six nations/rugby championships place finishes mid cycle.
At the end of the day, you ve got to beat the best to prove you are the real champion.
Well, SA didn’t beat the All Blacks in the last WC, so there goes that theory.
I would say having the draw at the end of 2022 would be better since the FIFA World Cup does the World Cup draw 7-8 months before the start of the competition and everything can change in 2 years as well. Also I'm sorry lmao but as a french I would have found this draw even more unfair than the one we currently have rofl since everyone in the Top 10 aside from France, Argentina & South Africa can be in the 1/4 but I still agree that the WC Draw should be done 2-3 years after the last tournament.
Nah mate, gotta give the unions time to organise fixtures and get an idea of their World Cup opposition. Essential for a contact sport 👀
@@TheBlackJersey Maybe you right lol especially since it's a combat sport like you said but they do this in football all the time and it work out pretty well so doing it during the Summer of 2022 after the TRC could have worked imo...even though yeah football is far from being a combat sport 😆
In hindsight, I think pool B was organised in this way so that ppl talk abt it and what not. I also like the idea of spreading the big guns out
I don't care who wins as long as it isn't the poms.
Harsh 🤣🤣🤣
That's pretty obvious. 😅
Like an old UK commercial I saw, it's not about who you want to win, but to lose. 😜
The Poms have an easy and sure road to the finals. They certainly don't deserve it.
@@Samizouza banned six nations ad
Group A and D currently have the lowest average rating, then group C then B is just stupid. But even in the revised list group B is still absolute death.
At the end of the day, if a team is a world-cup winner, that team will win!
We all know who will win, they’ve just got a harder path to the title than most champions 🥶
@@TheBlackJersey All rankings are innately past tense. If they cannot beat everyone in a RWC then guess what? Or maybe we should just hand out trophies based on world rankings every year. I can understand the grievances with the pools to some degree but at the end of the day if you lost you were not there when it mattered.
It's almost impossible for any group B team to handle Web Ellis Cup. They have to beat twice as many tough teams as their nearest group. Either very ill-conceived or ruthlessly planned. I cannot decide which 2 teams will emerge. There's no given there. Shame for all 4 main teams in it. I feel group A maybe the main benefactors for the whole thing, as a result
Well there's still a possibility we will see 2 of the top 4 ranked teams in the final lol so I don't really see a problem
The problem is we can’t guarantee the best two sides facing each other 😅
@@TheBlackJersey If the two best sides don't play each other that means they aren't the two best sides? The two best sides will meet eventually no matter what, that is the nature of a knockout tournament XD
Definitely not ideal draw, would have liked to see Scotland, sa and Ireland in playoffs. But that definitely cannot happen now.
I think we all know Scotland are well capable of beating the ABs too, they just haven’t had enough exposure to learn how we operate 👀
It’s definitely unfair that some tier one countries have an easy run to the quarters. For Example, Bokkes beat Wales in the last RWC semifinals. That was there first tough game which they where always going to win. Ireland are in the pool of death in this RWC but they had what should have been shoe ins for the semifinals against Argentina in the last RWC and Wales the time b4 that. Ireland lost both quarterfinals and only have themselves to blame! That’s why it’s a draw, some RWC’s are better than others.
Japan is fading
Only natural after the huge come-up from a few years back. They’d probably still beat Wales though 😂
That's a way better draw than the current one
For sure. Makes an easier path for the top two teams to face each other 👀
@@TheBlackJersey Surely putting the top two teams in one group would have the best chance of them meeting in the final, as then they cant play each other until the final?
The ABs have beaten Sth Africa 2 times In a row, last year in Jo'Burg, and last week in NZ,surely the rankings should show differently?!
Springboks won 2 in a row before that against All Blacks? The game before JHB and the second game that was played in oz the year before. Thats why the split going into this year was a mere 0.01 difference on the table, hardly anything separating these 2 teams since 2019. A home win game cannot catapult you above France who won 5 of their 6 as well as Ireland who went undefeated in the 6 nations in the same year.
Nah mate Scotland are still a few points behind the Boks.
That's it, play whoever, why must teams be put into perfect groups so that the big teams come out against each other. If your a champion team play the game.
Ireland got it easy last world cup, now they have it hard it doesn't really make sense as they were bad then and good now but i guess its just swings and roundabouts. The best team will win and they will have to beat the second best team along the way or in the final, it doesn't really matter.
Were SA a powerhouse? I remember them losing the first match.
I was referring to their pack 😂
they were probably more of an underdog than they are this time XD
I like our pool to be honest! Will be nice to humble Scotland and Ireland before the payoffs. 😂
Rugby is the winner at the end of day don’t care who we play linem up may the best team win best of luck to my pacific brothers💪🏾
Fair fair 🤷♂️
World Rugby give Ireland an easy run,and give Sexton a pitiful 3 week ban,had that been an All Black, you could bet money on it they would get longer,World Rugby are a disgrace.
Ireland are literally in the pool of death mate 😂😂😂
France and the all blacks can defo beat Ireland on the day. It just all comes down to how the boks are on the day aswell
@@chrislenferna4384Ireland’s side of the draw will probably force them to accept a silver medal as they’ll be so exhausted…
@@TheBlackJersey More running and tackling in games vs lower ranked sides due to how much the top rated teams kick rather than run with the ball, also both finalists can be from the side of the draw, so should be no excuses.
I don't know which I'll enjoy more. The rugby or the excuses from SA.
Lol someone lives rent free in your head 😂
@@michaelbaxter7452 Rassie lives rent-free in the minds of many… and will continue to after he inevitably blames the ref in a few months time 🤷♂️

All fantasy but they would be lovely pools
Too late... concentrate on the current draw & plan a survival strategy...coaches will be tested this time.🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
Tbh, last world cup was unfair also. Flukey run/draw for south Africa and they won.
england and wales losing their power 😅 both are smashing the southern hemispere sides
To be fair, had you asked me two months that Wales would dominate Australia so completely, even my proud Welsh heart couldn't have believed it.
I think your spot on and also definitely Irish should of had some reward for all hard work. But instead we get pool of death. Then people have a saying the look of the Irish. 😂😂😂
@patrickkelly , good chance to prove who is better out of the two teams, as an AB supporter I'm looking forward to that game , as well as AB v France .
its not so much your group but more the side of the draw, even if you get out of the group you have to face one of the two favourites, and you have never one a quarter before so it'll be tough.
I prefer the draw being early as it gives all countries more time to plan strategy.
That’s why I’d prefer two years out for the draw to be made. You hit the sweet spot between too far out and too close to the tournament 💯
Pretty sure Ireland will go out at quarters as they usually do. It's just a matter of depth - a few injuries and that's the end of their campaign.
Bring Irish I think our campaign management has always been poor with 2007 being the textbook on how not to do your final phase of preparation for a major tournament.
I am hopeful that under Andy Farrell we will be better prepared this time.
@@olivermahon9509exactly if us Irish go out in the quarters we will have no excuses. Literally none. Our depth is fantastic. Our average squad age is pretty sure below 24 but I could be wrong. We’ve beaten France , the All blacks in their own backyard and also South Africa this year. No excuses
Ireland have lost just two tests since 1st January 2022… one to France, while the Eden Park test by the ABs was an absolute fluke 😅
I think that changes this year
Your draw is way better and makes more sense.I just dont want to see England in the final again.
England will be lucky to reach the quarter-finals 💀
"Obviously Ireland or France are going to win" I hate this mindset. The one thing I love about rugby is that it's NEVER predictable. Secondly, as far as I can see the dominance of the irish and the french teams has only been proven in the 6 nations, which excludes South Africa and New Zealand. I have a feeling the Southern Hemisphere is going to shock the European teams.
Didn't Ireland win against New Zealand twice at home less than a year ago?
@@somebodygothurtDidn't Ireland also beat South Africa at the November test in Dublin last year?
Aren't ireland on a 13 game winning streak having beaten every top 10 team in the last 18 months?
The difference between 2019 and 2023 is in 2019 ireland made it to number 1 the week before the tournament, this time around they have been number 1 for some time
You're so wrong! You're being far too logical! ;o)
😂😂😂
Interesting that Boks were a 'powerhouse' in 2019...back then that was not the general view...they were no where near on the radar...the same now...the Boks are going in exactly where they want to be .. under the radar....Go Bokke 😎
Difference was that in 2019, the Boks’ losing streak was over, while they were a team with future prospects in the mix. Today, they’re too old to win.
I never saw them winning in 2019, because I simply wasn’t paying enough attention as I was a regular person without an audience and wasn’t getting paid to examine this stuff 😅
@@TheBlackJersey Nobody saw them winning not even myself as a Springbok supporter. As Rassie said, 2023 world cup has been the focus since he took over, 2019 was just a bonus.
If the All Blacks don't make it to the big dance my support goes to Ireland if there's one team I don't want there is South africa (because) that's my Bias opinion.
AB fan 😢
As long as England and Wales don’t win I’ll be happy. They’ve made bad business decisions and deserve the results to go with them. I feel bad for the players though 😔
Let's go Argentina plz !
Yep, very very disappointing that the likes of England and Australia get an easy ride through
Australia won't get out of the pool stage. Bath am Cymru.

@@TheBlackJersey 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I respectfully disagree with your premise. This draw is a major advantage for the top 4 teams. Especially France and New Zealand. Both of these are guaranteed to make it out of their pool. These 2 then will meet an exhausted Ireland and probabay South Africa. Fance and AB's will go through and meet underdone England & Australia . The final will be the one France and the world wants and France will beat the AB's to win the world cup.
No harm in a civil disagreement 🙌
England have a clear road to the semi & for some reason they can't make a finals
Samoa are coming for them 😏
World rugby needs to stop setting up the northern hemisphere teams, get the easy side of the draw, everytime.
You do realise every group is made up of a fair split between the 6 nations and rugby championship? 😅
Excuse me three of the best teams from he north are in the tough pools
If you replace "northern hemisphere teams" with "England" then what you say makes sense. Wouldn't say France, Ireland or Scotland have it easy this world cup.
