    Great video, I’m a new opal addict. I’ve finally got set up and have started cutting, and appreciate all the information and techniques that are out there. One thing I noticed is all the people that deal with opal are really great people! Very giving and really care, thanks so much for all your effort in trying to teach anybody that wants to learn.

    Starbond comes in 4 or 5 variations. The thin, like water is for filling cracks, People mix medium with an oil and buff at high spreed for a polish. Thick is a form of "super glue" and glues your fingers if you are not careful. They also have a thick for glueing 2 materials that shrink and expand at different rates, it is more elastic and keeps them stuck. Also a black one for transparent color to something you do not want to see. They also make a product to unstick your fingers. It does not hold at higher temps, so a soak in hot soapy water will also unstick fingers. I have been a woodturner for twenty years. I am learning about opal for accent pieces, knobs on lids etc to try to get a little more for my work and have it stand out at a show or gallery.

      G’day Sue, thanks for the info, I used the starbond thin hoping it would saturate into the pores to stabilise the surface enough to be able to be polished, it did well but I’d need to build up the layers, liquid glass is kind of a go to for resin coating, also I recommend Araldite for doublets, back in the day, when we drove heavy haulage, we got caught out in Katherine NT losing oil with a cracked timing cover in the Nissan UD prime mover, we could wait around a week for the part, or, Araldite the crack and get going, so the Araldite got us back to Adelaide SA then Melbourne Vic for a replacement part, good times. I love the idea for the knobs/handles opal inlay, with a mini lathe for a great finish. 🤪👍

    It's funny how memory works some times. I was rewatching this video, as I often do. The more I watch, the more I remember. But when I first started watching this video, (for some reason that I assumed was completely random), I started thinking about a time when I asked someone that I couldn't specifically remember (you, Roy, Justin, or Don) about if anyone had ever heard of someone using opal to create a false tooth, or set of dentures. Then about 1/3 of the way through this video, you answer that question. 😆

    You got the bug brother. I’m in Queensland and am dying to do some cutting. I snuck in before the big lockdown to lightning ridge and scored a couple of little bits and pieces and a heap of sandy potch with a slight glint here and there that my daughter swore was worth keepin. I watch Justin on you tube. But I’m getting into watching you a bit more cos you show more than just ridge nobbies. And cut everything else too. Keep goin bro and it’s good how ya cut a bit of everything and you’re a good teacher. I’ve learnt a lot off ya too,obviously cos you’re not stuck on one thing. You also don’t crucify doublets or treatments and have loved learning about that. What do you think about Boulder? I’ve seen a little bit of it and it looks messy and quite complicated to get nice domed ovals. Cos of its nature. At the moment it’s the only place I can get to cos I don’t have to cross the border. Thing is I take my 18 year old daughter and the ridge was good with her cos the place has a lot of different stuff to do. It’s unreal noodling with ya kid aye. Sorry bout the book.
    Love ya channel I’ve hit the bell now so I’ll be stingin to catch a live.

You came across the product that takes it from a 10000 to 20000 wet dry that will give you a crystal polished look to your matrix. Is just a suggestion

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  Před 2 lety

      G’day Cheryl, yes, with new wheels, pads or dremel sintered burrs, it’s always a good idea to run them in on some scrap material, just to be sure they run smoothly, so to speak, sometimes there can be minuscule inconsistencies in manufacturing and wearing them in can be required. 🤪👍

    I don't understand why you put resin or glue on the stones...maybe watch black opal direct to see how it is done naturally..just saying

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  Před 2 lety

      G’day Jojo, you’re going to have to help me out, the only time I use glue/resin is to make doublets or seal rainbow matrix, neither of which were in this video. Are you referring to the green dopping wax to hold the opal on the dop stick?

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  Před 2 lety

      I think you might be referring to the rainbow matrix, Justin doesn’t even cut this stuff so I don’t know you’ve correlated that. Rainbow or concrete matrix is sometimes too porous to take a good polish, so the pores need to be filled in, it’s the nature of the beast.
