Eris, like Pluto, is a little smaller than Earth's Moon. If the Earth were the size of a nickel, Eris would be about as big as a popcorn kernel. From an averange distance of 6,289,000,000 miles (10,125,000,000 kilometers), Eris is about 68 astronomical units away from the Sun.
Eris has an orbital period of 558 years. Its maximum possible distance from the Sun (aphelion) is 97.65 AU, and its closest (perihelion) is 37.91 AU. This means that Eris and its moon are currently the most distant known objects in the Solar System, apart from long-period coments and space probes.
Its orbit is highly eccentric, or elongated, and very tilted. Eris's orbit is so tilted that some scientists call it a member of the Kuiper belt's scattered disk rather than of the Kuiper belt itself. The surface of Eris may be covered with thite methane ice. Eris has one known moon, Dysnomia.
Eris' atmosphere is too thin to be considered a true atmosphere and appears primarily to be composed of methane that sublimates from ice on the surface. Eris lacks the gravity needed to capture gas particles as it travels through the solar system, being much smaller than any planet, and smaller than many big moons.
