    For those that don't ride they won't understand what a ride like that does to a person, it leaves scars and bruises but also leaves you extremely happy with accomplishment. Nothing worth doing is easy. Congrats Josh!

    Finished the film and read the comments. As a finisher, I think you all did a great job of capturing the feel, size, lonliness and the headspace of the race. I liked both the cinematography and the music selection. There are portions of the race that are crystal clear to me know, nearly 5 years after finishing, and there are entire sections of the route that are nothing more than a blur. The B&W and focus changes captured did a great job of bringing back those feelings.
    While I appreciate the film, I will echo other comments in stating that it would have been good of this crew to have been held to the same standards that the other film crews were held to this year.

    Excellent film capturing Josh Ibbett's rookie year on the Tour Divide. I think it's infinitely better than 'I just want to Ride'.

    After no longer being able to race my bike, from the second I saw bikepacking on youtube I was hooked! Just got back from 4 days bikepacking around my region and now planning a 2 week bikepacking adventure around Sth Island NZ in March. And yes, there is something very liberating living entirely off one's bike...as Leonardo da Vinci said "Simplicity is the greatest sophistication".

    This was great. Disagree completely with the top comments here. Kudos for the doc crew for not putting themselves in it and also making an hour+ movie of basically similar footage of a dude on a bike so entertaining. I, for one, have never heard of the race before and only know it now because of this film. I’m personally glad they were allowed to make it. What an absolutely incredible journey to share.

    Excellent film. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I’d love to (tour) the GDMBR one day. If one thing really struck me from watching this - and this is no criticism of this team’s conduct - it’s the far stricter rules applied to Lael Wilcox’s documenting team. Really did seem to be double standards and I feel the organisers need one set of suitably robust rules for everyone’s media next year.

    • @freddixon
      @freddixon Před 4 lety +6

      I was thinking the same thing. I see the camera person following him along a back road, how is that not mental support at the least?

    • @BenRipleyPhoto
      @BenRipleyPhoto Před 4 lety +11

      freddixon just to be clear I’m not suggesting it was ‘support’ in this case, as it was all done in accordance with the rules. But why Lael’s team was treated so differently (the fact Rugile, her GF, was a team member hardly makes it a game changer) is a mystery and left a bitter taste for me at least. I really hope it was an anomaly and confined to this year.

    • @ryanlegarrec5380
      @ryanlegarrec5380 Před 4 lety +7

      freddixon hey Fred! Honestly I don’t think that neither Lael nor Josh need any mental support to finish and win races. Also I think a car following you twenty minutes once or twice a day doesn’t solve your saddle sores. These riders have long ago and on many occasions more than proven themselves. They just want to share their love for racing beautiful routes. They re not feeling or needing or creating any support here.

    • @freddixon
      @freddixon Před 4 lety +2

      Agreed.
      I would like to see if the race organizers / independent filmmaker(s) could film the race as oppose to a team's crew?

    • @multisportscott
      @multisportscott Před 4 lety +4

      @@ryanlegarrec5380 they may not need mental support to finish races, or even win races, BUT it is still an unfair advantage knowing you have someone out there. It potentially means they can push harder because they know there is someone lurking around nearby that can bail them out if the shit hits the fan. Sure everyone has a SPOT tracker but not everyone has a couple of people, mates, partners or otherwise not far away throughout the event. It's not in the spirit of the event to have a crew following one rider.

    On the movie editing, I liked the b&w and the saturated colour footage, they added to the mood. Great music too. There were a few glitches with the titles showing 1st June instead of 1st July towards the end, but overall I found it very watchable.

    Everything you said in the first 2:30 is also true of motorcycle travel. The further from home you get and the tougher the trip, the more people come up to you to connect. I think subconsciously people want to be like that. It’s a lifestyle that has the same attraction as water. People can’t help but want to look at it, touch it and be a part of it because inside, there’s a large part of it in them. Same way with minimal living and traveling. Even those that have chosen to be anchored long to be free somewhere inside.

      Good filmmaking and good cinematography isn't always about obtaining the most technical or beautiful shot, it's about using the lense to capture real life in a way that accurately communicates the feelings of that moment. The whole thing was gritty, and it had to be. There was no time to plan or time shots, it communicated the urgency of the race.

    Don't get me wrong the film is great, but Lael Wilcox caught so much unnecessary shit for also having a camera crew on course in this race, to the point that the additional rules/restrictions placed on her were one of the contributing factors to her scratching. All the while Josh and his film crew stayed completely silent on this matter neither defending her nor rebuking the people attacking the presence of her film crew, why were they not subject to the same scrutiny she was?

    Good effort, great route and really tests you physically and mentally. It’s a route that’s really too nice to race if you have never rode it for fun.
    Well done mate, but the same can’t be said for the editing it kinda spoils the journey. Maybe an 8min edit of all the best bits would be better.

    Nice job on the film. But the ending of the race was pretty anti-climatic. They have no one there at the finish to greet people? I was part of a crew for RAAM and they had this finish line with a bunch of people cheering you on no matter where you finished. Pretty amazing accomplishment never the less.

    A great achievement, congratulations. However, Label Wilcox got so much shit about a film crew and friends on the course that she scratched. From her film I gather the organizer didn't help either. So WTF is it here with crew, etc., what about equal expectations and "rules" for all competitors? I personally don't think a film crew has any business on the course, even if the competitors are "clean" regarding outside support.....a slippery slope.

      What would Mike Curiak think about >100 riders at the start, sharing hotel rooms and riding together for days on end? The slope is slippery indeed! The Divide is about the love of austerity, the bike and the mountains! Do it in a way that is pure in your own eyes, for you, and I approve!

    Horrible editing. Made for painful watching. Hope you're not epileptic. I struggled through half of this and gave up. Gave a good impression of the brain fog and suffering encountered during the race. If a video could be so depressing then the ride itself must be far worse. Feel like never riding a bike again. Ugh! Makes Love Island seem like the pinnacle of film making. The dolorous music and nonsensical time jumps are a lesson in how to effectively convey the emptiness of the experience. Excruciating.
