    • @fermiticus4034
      @fermiticus4034 Před 4 lety +68

      Just speculation here, as I have zero knowledge of lamprey spawning habits....
      If they spawn, one on one and the males compete, the bigger/stronger sterile males could "win", which would result in the female dropping her eggs, and they'd go unfertilized...and/or the male that "loses"(not sterile), doesn't get to spawn at all.
      (That's the only way I can make sense of it, anyway)

    • @ProGuitar555
      @ProGuitar555 Před 4 lety +66

Start a mobile fish processing plant and start catching them and shipping them overseas for food. Generate some revenue for the people living in the areas around the Great lakes instead of taxing them more for these studies.

      I've lived in Wisconsin my whole life and have never heard of anybody being attacked by a lamprey. Frankly I'm fine with what they are doing with my taxes, and have no interest in subsidizing or supporting such fisheries. If the market had demand for such things, that's fine, but it doesnt really exist and there is no reason to waste time, money and effort when there is no demand. The fine men and women who work on the lakes and protect the lakes against many invasive species do amazing work in keeping our lakes safe and serviceable for us. They deserve all the credit in the world. That's my opinion.

      The males are released so they can track them to spawning area. Male lamprey will fight other makes for females. The males are sterile so even if they out compete other males they can't reproduce anymore.

Releasing sterilized males into the wild isnt an unprecedented practice, it is used to combat other parasitic species such as the bot flies in south america.
