The Tops Brakimo was designed and named by Joe Flowers. He has designed many Knives and machetes for well-known companies such as Condor out of El Salvador.
Joe also runs a survival school of sorts called Bushcraft Global in Colombia. The school takes people of all skill levels into the Amazonian jungle for more than a week to teach them survival skills.
This knife was designed for this particular trek and the Amazon jungle Environment. When they sign up for the expedition, participants will get this knife and a Tops machete.
    Specifications:
    Blade Length: 5.25"
    Handle Length: 4.75"
    Overall Length: 10.00"
    Knife Weight: 9.4oz/ 266.5gm
    Blade Thickness: 0.190"/ 4.8mm
    Blade Finish: Tungsten Cerakote
Blade Grind: Modified scandi grind or sabre grind
    Blade Steel: 1095 RC 56-58
1095 is part of the 10 series of steel.
In the case of “1095” the first digit “1” refers to carbon, the second digit “0” means that there is no second main element used in the alloy, and the two last digits “95” refers to 0.95%, which gives us 0.95% of Carbon.
It has good edge retention, of course not as good as stainless steels and Super steels. But it is tough and more than adequate for Bushcraft.
The main criticism of 1095 or high carbon steel is that it has low corrosion resistance and is prone to rust. However, practitioners know that if you use the knife regularly, keep the blade dry and clean after use, rusting in the field is not an issue.

It's definitely not a saber .. Its a perfect scandiVex and works amazing . I have used mine for 3 years and it's wicked good esp the tip.
The only thing I dislike is the "stonewash" coating . It breaks down and gets rust in the river groves ....I took mine off and just did my own patina.
I originally wanted a thicker handle but now I prefer it . The thin handle allows you to use the knife better for detailed work. Also once you convex the shoulder on that secondary it's awesome for feather sticks.
IMHO it's one of the best true survival knives I've ever owned.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! The coating has not broken down on me yet. I'm pretty careful with maintenance when coming back from the field. But I am sure it will wear out over time. Then I will force a patina on it.

Most TOPS knives come in a box.
The Brakimo used to come with a plastic clip, but lots of folks didn’t like it, so they must be putting the metal clip on them now.
The Brakimo (imho) is maybe the best knife you can carry in this size.
It makes a great companion to my favorite knife, my modified TOPS Armageddon.
I have very large hands and the handle works just fine for me. Micarta gets sticky when it’s wet. And I appreciate the thin profile of the handle.

      Glad to hear it.
I’ve been fortunate enough to get to know the guys who run TOPS Knives. Even got to know the founder Mike Fuller.
You couldn’t find a group of better men and women.

Nice. I wonder how much it cost to take the survival course.

    • @urbanknifeguy
      @urbanknifeguy  Před rokem +3

Not as expensive as one would think. Last I heard, it was like usd1500 for 10 days, including the knife and machete.

@@urbanknifeguy $1500 can pay for a very nice vacation with all inclusive meals and drinks. To pay $1500 to go into a jungle and to only eat what you can find is not what I call good value even if you do learn some survival tips. The children who crashed in the jungle survived 45 days. I would like to learn from them. :-) I am sure it is a good course and one can learn a lot but $1500 is a lot of money in South America.

@GlockNinja I think one is paying for access to the indigenous people to learn from them etc in a safe programme.
