- Last week I was bragging about how bulletproof my 1986 Porsche 911 is. Looks like I screwed myself because here we go with more classic Porsche 911 problems.
If you're thinking about buying one of these cars, you need to get familiar with the typical classic Porsche 911 problems BEFORE, not AFTER, you buy one. So check out this latest installment of Porsche 911 ownership series.
The cool thing about this video is that it's not all bad news. I'll also take you through some cool mods and changes I'll be making to my 86 Carrera, my 95 993 and my '92 964.

Your shifting problems may actually be due to a worn coupler. If you haven't replaced it then you definitely need to do that before you do anything else. Stomski makes a really good one.
Every week it's fun to see what new upgrades you are tinkering with. I had hoped after last week's video that you would soon sell the '86 to ME but with new Recaro seats and wheels it looks like it's gonna be a keeper for you. I rarely touch or modify anything on my Porsches so it's neat to watch how others like to upgrade. What's important is that you are happy with results and they make you want to drive more! Thanks for taking the time to share each week!
In either my next video or the following I will be discussed my 86 and where my head is with it. Let’s put it this way: the changes I’m making are easily reversible as I think it would do better as a largely stock example if it went on the market. 😃
I'm another one in the crowd of make it your own and have a lot of fun doing it. Personally, I'm not the creative type that can imagine these things without seeing it first so if you're doing something new that I haven't seen I think it's cool to watch you do it. I'm not currently an owner but aspire to be soon. Unfortunately I have fallen head over heels in love with the 993. Anyway bright lights and fancy video tricks are cool but as you pointed out what really matters is consistent content. Thank you for your efforts.

Great video Will! I overthink them and don't get any done, so kudo getting the video out and enjoyed the more casual production. And if you like the plaid, keep the plaid. Your video encourage me to think more about what to do mine, struggle with keeping close to original/stock. And those Recarros are tempting and cant wait to see how the look in your 993.
The Wevo is a very reliable shifter conversion, I have one on my 86 TL. My guess is something is worn. If you want the newest and the brightest then look at the Numeric shifter for the 915. Guys on Pelican are pulling their Wevos and replacing with the Numeric shifter. When I rebuild my trans I will probably do the same

Love the plaid in the 993! You did such a good job spec-ing it and it looks great! The 964 looks great as is. Love the Ruf look (considered it myself). But your 964 look is SO classic! Don't this it will make it look better.
Nice, love the outlaw , I’ve owned a couple 996’s but not an air cooled. I’m really excited, my father is gifting me his 1985 911 wide body cabriolet this spring with rebuilt 1992 motor for extra horsepower! Not sure what to expect but looking forward to getting back in old school car for some mountain driving. Loved seeing your videos
I am in the make it your own crowd, no purists here. But I like the look of debadging. Cleaner look. No one needs to know what you have. If they are interested they can ask.

Looking forward to seeing the changes (especially the plaid in the 993) lol. A little bummed out to hear that the 964 will become more of a garage queen/special occasion car but I understand why you want to keep it perfect. The 964 is the ultimate 911 in my opinion.
Seats are great, sadly not really a fan of these Group 4 wheels. And of course, make it your own. It's your car, you paid for it, you're going to be driving it and keep living with it. It has to suit you, no one else.
Would welcome hearing what you decide on putting the OEM shifter back. I like the WEVO but it changed the shift position and I don't drive it much. The more precise shifting is nice, but I cannot tell you that it has made that significant an improvement from the OEM.
Love the RUF wheels and the Amazon green color. Big fan of Recaro in general and those choices match the cars💯 Outlaw makes this so much more fun!

Great vid regarding your question about stock gear shift, I’ve seen others who have returned to stock on several aspects of 911’s that have been modified. The overall consensus appears to be that Porche designed the car as a whole and everything on it is part of that design. Modifying for more power or modernizing is almost like taking the car away from the original design and often stock isn’t bad and returns the original feel of the car.
Wow, sorry about the paint chips, that really sucks. Glad you got the car home with bad shifter. I look forward to hearing more about that. I really like the look of the interior on the 993, but you need to do what makes you happy. I do like new seats also. You are a truly enthusiastic about your cars. I would recommend you tailor each 911 to what makes you happy and spend less time worrying about what others think. I do agree with easily reversible mods for certain vehicles, so that’s not a bad philosophy IMHO. Do you have the Wevo gearbox mod or just the shifter? I think you said in a past video, but just couldn’t remember. Thanks again for sharing.
When I installed my Wevo shifter, I also put in a Stomski shift coupler. That made a big difference. I love my Wevo, but it may be starting to develop some issues. Overall really happy with it.
The plan for the 993 seat upgrade and door cards sounds great! With all your cars - "you paid for them so make what you like of them". Anyone who says different should spend more energy on their own cars and less energy on hazing others about the choices they make on THEIR cars. Enjoy the drives man!
Love the look of your 86 just the way it is. Gorgeous car. The front of my 997 turbo is filmed which repels stone chips.

Great video Will! On the 993 - you have done such a refined and unique build on the car, I’m sad to lessen its punch. Not to dis Racaro seats, I have Profi (driver) & Sport (passenger) in my 964. For my body shape, they’re amazingly comfortable.
One option to consider, with the Profi, the seat bottom and back panels are removable and could be upholstered in the plaid, if that’s of interest to you.
I may end up doing the centers in both sets of Recaro’s in some sort of fabric but I think I would rather enjoy them first then get into that later. Not sure how much experience you have with that kind of thing but it can be a long and frustrating wait not to mention the challenges finding a good shop to do it.
Dang Will, you don’t disappoint! Always look forward to your content. Sorry to hear about the ‘86 woes…although doesn’t sound like it’s too bad. On the Wevo survey, I’d go back to stock. Just count “thousand 1, thousand 2” with each shift to let the synchros catch up, and you’re set. Love the Group 4 Campys; really toyed with getting those for a while; Jonathan is great with a true passion for his craft. Did you get 15” or 16”? 7x8? Glad you went with the silver over the gold; silver looks amazing. I Ended up putting some refurbished silver cookie cutters on mine…which I really like. I went with 195 width in the front, which I think makes it a bit easier to turn at crawl speeds. Look forward to seeing how it all turns out! Oh, the plaid is cool…tough call. Put emblem on 964 also.
16x7 and 16x8. I’m pretty excited to try them out. I think they’ll be a handling and weight improvement over the Euromeisters.
The problem with the wevo ended up being a plastic bushing that failed. Pretty easy fix although I’d like to figure out why it happened.
Good to see these beautiful models getting enjoyed by the owner.
Oh well, time to do the valve adjustments. Get new tires. Leather conditioner . Replace one of the 12 inch subwoofers in the rear area,. The transmission likes a smooth shift and 5th gear sits there so patiently. 6500 RPM is my limit, but the car likes it as well.
1st gear is just a suggestion. Just keep that clutch bled.

I really like the 915 with the Wevo in my car, and really didn't like the non-spring loaded stocker. Yuck. Unfortunately, even the Wevo can't cure my car's terrible 1-2 shifting.
Have a wevo in my 930 and has been trouble free. Possible something else is worn. Also have Ruf speed lines 17”s and I love the look.
We opened up the wevo yesterday and a plastic bushing in it had come apart.
Puzzling bc it is a new part. Has only been in the car for maybe a year.
For the 3.2, would NOT put those Recaro or wheels... the car is just so pure as it is!
For the 964. Those Recaros woukd look great with black cards too. But would also put back the original cup wheels.
For the 964. Changing those stock wheels is a crime!!
Conclusion: nothing ever looks as good as original Porsche wheel... EVER!

I love the Group4 wheels, I went with anthracite gray in my guards red 87. Great wheels, very light and look amazing. The problems on your 86 are minor, yes get rid of the weevo.

Heya! I live in Charlotte and have a 964 Targa. Those Ruffs look sick! I'm on the verge of putting a set of 18 inch Speedlines by RH on mine. I also recently picked up a 1985 3.2 targa project. My question is how is the handling on the 3.2 with those 17s? Thanks!
I have always run 17’s on my 86 so can’t give you a comparison to 16’s but I can say they are confidence inspiring and haven’t let me down and I have pushed the car quite hard many times.

Will, the RUF 18" on the 964 appear over wheeled to my eye. I ran 18" MY02s with spacers and coupled with H&R springs looked awesome. Appears you still have your set off the 993... another option to try

What about upgrading to a G50 trans from a 88-90? Something doesn't seem right with that webo shifter I'd reach out to the company. May have been installed or set up incorrectly. If it is in fact an engineering design flaw you could look into a CAE or Numeric racing shifter.
Since your 964 was ordered with the emblem delete would leave as is for super clean look... I mean why add additional weight lol.

We pulled the wevo apart yesterday and a plastic bushing failed in it. Easy fix.
I saw that green one with orange bumpers at 1:10 for sale online a little while back.
What about the JWest Engineering RennShifter as a replacement? I know Magnus Walker runs them in some of his cards and they have an excellent reputation as a WEVO competitor (some say better) on all the forums.
I’m gonna give this wevo one more try then go back to stock if it doesn’t work.
Will, can you let us know where you find some of the mods you are adding. I actually prefer some of the personalized stuff you have done and I'd like more details on how you find and source the various parts. Also, I love the plaid seats in the 993.

Like where you going with the trio. Cant believe your changing the seats again on the 993, but I do understand why. I would do the plaid on the new seats and keep the door panels as they are. Love the seats for the 86'. I would re-wrap them to match the rest of the interior.
I will probably get around to changing the seat fabric but I am in a “function over form” state of mind and honestly also don’t want to deal with the headaches of getting them redone right now.
Repairpal rates cars objectively by analyzing all repair invoices on record. Porsche is ranked dead last, 32 of 32 in quality.

I hear what you’re saying but the wevo is a widely used kit that has a good reputation.
I am thinking maybe it was adjusted incorrectly, I got a bad bushing or maybe operator error.
I’m gonna give it one more whirl and it I can’t get it to play nice with me I’ll go back to stock.

hey i have a 1979 911 sc and my car is cranking and not starting, I changed the starter the oil the battery the spark plugs, the wires are good, why is it doing this? anything will help thank you !!! also the car ahs been sitting for some years now so maybe I just gotta clean the spark plugs after trying to start it.

How did you fit the Sportster seats into the 993? I’ve got a set with Recaro sliders but having a real hard time getting them to fit into my 1996 993C4S. Any tips greatly appreciated.
The brackets need to be modified.
Line the front slots in the brackets up with the forward factory seat bolt holes.
Then you will need to elongate the holes in the rear of the brackets to line up with the aft seat bolt holes.
Use a drill with a small bit at first then slowly move up in size until you get the hole to the desired size.
It’s painful but worth it. I love these seats.
@@Rennthusiast Did this and they fit square on the seat bracket. But the seats still appear to not fit in the car. I’ve tried but they look to be too wide at the rear. I don’t really want to take the carpet out. Does the adjustment knob need to be removed and the bar cut to a shorter length?
It’s a tight fit but it will work.
I will be doing a video review of the seats week after next, FYI. I’ll touch on install (but no technical how-to footage…isn’t what my channel is about). You’ll at least get good detailed footage of the fit, though.
Cantrell Motorsports sells a thinner seatback adjustment knob which I bought but I am not going to use them as I don’t really like how they mate up to the seat.
At the end of it all, you’ll need to get the seat backs where you want them with the seat slid forward, then slide the seat back as far as you can. The seatback adjustment knob will sit against the carpet but should not cut or tear it.
Wonder if the Wevo is as reliable as the OEM shifter ... Disappointed for the price. Nice Group 4 Wheels !! I intend to purchase a set of these for my 81 SC, I'm interested by which tyres are you gonna put on these. Thks

I am running a J West RennShift performance shifter n my 82 SC along with a Precision shift coupler. It could be something as simple as the coupler needing adjustment or being worn. It has taken me some tinkering to get it adjusted as I put the shifter/coupler in myself. Hope you get it sorted soon.
Thanks. We keep making small adjustments. Perhaps this repair (found out it’s a broken plastic bushing) and some micro-adjustment will be the ticket.

Regarding the Wevo: I ordered one last year and it came plastered in a 6x8 inch sticker reading “BLACK LIVES MATTER.” I called the company asking if they had applied it. The person in the other end had an Australian accent (owner I assume) and was quite clear that they had put the sticker on my package.
I don’t like mixing politics with my car hobby, and much of what makes the car hobby enjoyable is getting together with people of different backgrounds that share a common interest in cars; but I am the son of an immigrant that fled a communist country to come to the US. Using my package to promote a violent Marxist organization like BLM was just too much to stomach.
After changing the sticker to read, “ALL LIVES MATTER,” I sent it back at my cost without even opening it. One has to wonder if the owner would change his tune if Wevo was burned to the ground by BLM, like other businesses have been.
I continued running the stock shifter and it’s fine. It’s a G50 car so it’s pretty good out of the box. If I had a 915 I’d look into other options.
I have a 1985, identical to yours. If you are going to install a shift kit, find a pro that knows what they are doing, do not try it yourself. Oil drain plug should never leak, really some sort of rookie mistake by someone....use the STOCK drain plug, don't try and get fancy with anything else.
Definitely make it your own! I also love to see the all the "originals", but my hearts beats for the "tailor-mades", the "outlaws" and the "individuals". For me, nothing reflects the affection, love and devotion to these fun cars anymore... Great channel! Looking forward to see more. Keep it alive!
I have an 86’ with the 915 gearbox. My mechanic, and I really like my mechanic, told me to leave the 915 alone because after market products are more prone to break. I tweak out the 915 shifter and it’s fine. I acclimate to how it feels. The only problem is 3rd to 4th and I’ve learned exactly how to make it work. I’d mentioned this before and you replied that you shouldn’t let my mechanic dictate things I’d like to do to my own car but I do wonder if he’s right. I decided to leave the 915 alone. We’ll, at this time anyway. Just my opinion
Wevo is a standard modification to the shifter that many people run successfully for a long, long time. I think this failure was due to improper adjustment putting pressure on the plastic bushing, which I have had replaced.
@@Rennthusiast I know this is crazy and may not even be possible and cost prohibitive but I wonder if the G50 would hook up to these cars. Swap the gear box. That’s probably crazy and won’t work cause I’m sure I’d heard about it being done somewhere. If that’s just a stupid idea I’m new to Porsche. I’ve be lots to learn.
It’s doable but expensive and presumably will devalue clean examples

I think there’s a fine line with would I enjoy the car better and make it a forever car and not worry about the value decrease or it’s just crazy. But, it could be starting something that others will frown upon but others might think “I love my car and making it drive even better would be great” I’ll find out. What the heck. I am considering purchasing a 911 and these seem live very minor things. I currently work on classic BMW's and they have some serious catastrophic items that need to be addressed. But after that, the M series cars are awesome.

Just sold an 87 Carrera with 32K it will surely be missed. Back filled with a GT350R, a little easier to abuse on track day.
I had a red 88 Carrera with a whale tail ( also for AC recirculation) never had engine/ drive train problems, sold it after 10 years within 48 hrs to a smart shopper. Must be worth $100k by now
Throw the badge on. It can come off later. Carrera 2 I guess were horded for companies like stinger and so on, making them rare?

Personal view is sportster looks a bit too modern for 993. I prefer period correct looking seats like pole position, but then they are fixed back so not as practical.
Yes, I considered the PP but I really need a back adjustment. I hear what you’re saying about too modern as others have said it too but it doesn’t bother me the way it bothers some guys I know.

The only thing your 964 is missing is the Carrera 2 badge.

Get rid of a Wevo for the 915. Most guys are trying to improve shifts
Understand the syngos are not spooling up quick enough in the 915 Transmission just live with stock
The 18 inch wheels for the 993 are garbage really waste of money, keep the Cup 2 17 inch

The plaid loss is a big step forward to better. That plaid is all wrong for a 993. IMHO. Those 18” wheels are heavy….you’ll kill the car with them.

@@Rennthusiast Had a rauh welt 996tt.....lightness matters. Trust me. Faster start. And stop. Less wear on the suspension. Better stick to the road. Go to elephant racing and do some fun suspension work and then do an HPDE....then think about 35lb wheels or 18lb wheels. I'd aim for a super light set of forged somethings.
The Ruf wheels are TUV and tough as nails....if you had a yellowbird engine with that sort of hp, and the full drivetrain to support it...and the such...and the suspension was designed for the heavy wheels...then go for it. But for the look, well your call. I see porsches not as jewelry but as driving tools and there is sort of a responsibility to keep that focus in the car - my 2c. They have become ornaments to many and to me and many that is just a bad thing.
So, yes, an opinion, but for enough money Porsche would sell you a car with heavy wheels in an ugly color too....in the end it is a business. All of this stuff is that as none of us are making a living driving them....
Anyway, glad you are bringing some light to the air cooled world. Making a car a lightweight special is rewarding.....lithium batter, buckets from carbon, light wheels, etc. But it is not for everyone.
Don’t forget. I have the 993 and the 86. Both are designed as backroads rippers. #RealDriver here. Thanks for your insight in all seriousness.

I do think they look bigger but I don’t think they look too big. Wheels are soooo subjective though, and I can see why you would have this opinion.

Just shift the 915 with stock shifter with correct bushings and the yoke must be correct or rebuilt
The problem wasn’t the wevo. The factory bushing finally failed. Needed a new one. All is well now. Many dudes I know run the wevo problem free.

Thank goodness it's not the motor, you said it,,the more you run something hard the more you risk of breaking it..dont,, just run it up to 4500rpms you dont have to max out on them.
4500rpms....are you kidding? These motors love a to redline at (6200). You'll hurt the motor more by limiting it to only 4500. I'm not

@@nickrapitis4896 why not redline? These engines are built to rev, right? Don't do it always but, once in a while. My 87 911 has a 6200 redline. But, from what I've heard is the engine could safely handle 6500.

Not sure what you’re talking about bro. The shifter bushing failed. We opened it up and found it had broken apart. On the way to the shop when I tried to get it to go into 3rd it would go into 5th.
